This study had the objective of verifying the differential growth of carcass organs and visceras in relation to the empty body weight of Santa Ines and Bergamacia lambs. Thirty-six non-castrated male lambs, 24 Santa Ines breed and 12 Bergamacia breed, slaughtered at 15, 25, 35 and 45 kg of live weight under feedlot system receiving a diet with forage:concentrate ratio of 20:80 were used. The study of the relative growth of internal organs, fats, carcass non-integrant parts, carcass parts and components of the abdominal and thoracic cavities was carried out by means of the non-linear model of the potency equation Y = αXβ, linearly transformed into a linear model, lnY = lnα + βlnX. Liver, pancreas, abomasum, small intestine, large intestine and thoracic cavity are parts of the empty body of the animals that presented early development, while spleen, abdominal cavity, carcass integrant and non-integrant parts presented isogonic growth (β=1); the fat stores presented negative heterogonic growth (β<1). The omasum and rumen/reticulum of Santa Ines lambs growth early, while in Bergamacia lambs, it grows late. Liver, pancreas, abomasum, small intestine, large intestine and thoracic cavity in both breeds present early development and spleen, abdominal cavity, carcass integrant and non-integrant parts present isogonic growth in relation to the weight of the empty body.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of pre and postnatal feed restriction on growth and production of Santa Ines lambs from weaning to slaughter. Forty-eight lambs were assigned to three treatments as follows: lambs with prenatal feed restriction (PRER), lambs with postnatal feed restriction (POSTR), and lambs with no feed restriction (Control). Average daily feed intake (as fed basis) of lambs on POSTR treatment (624 g/d) was significantly lower (P<0.05) than that of lambs on control (757 g/d) and PRER (765 g/d) treatments possibly because of the feed restriction after birth. However, total feed intake was lowest on control, which may be explained by the earlier slaughter age of lambs in this treatment compared to feed-restricted animals. Daily weight gain of non-restricted lambs (Control) averaged 257 g/d and was greater than the daily weight gain of POSR and PRER treatments that averaged 155 and 198 g/d, respectively. Lower after weaning production on PRER and POSR treatments compared to control indicated that feed-restricted animals were not able to compensate the imposed restriction leading to later slaughter age and higher feed consumption.

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the growth, performance and size of viscera of Santa Ines lambs after compensatory gain. Twenty-two animals, with two ranges of initial body weights, light (33.5 kg) and heavy (56.8 kg), were allotted to one of the three diets: control, fed ad libitum; nutritional restriction, fed to maintain body weight; and compensatory growth with feed restriction and then fed without restriction up to body weight similar to control animals, when they were slaughtered. The experimental diets, constituted of Coast-cross (Cynodon dactylon) grid hay, and a concentrate with soybean (Glicine max L.) meal, corn (Zea mays L.), citrus pulp, livestock urea and vitamin and mineral supplement met the nutritional requirements for each different objective. Animals in fed restriction showed the worst final body weight, dry matter intake, weight gain, feed conversion and relative liver weight whereas those in compensatory growth, the final body weight, feed conversion and liver weight were similar to the animals in continuous growth. Intake among heavy animals in continuous growth was superior to those kept in the other diets. For the group of light animals in compensatory growth, weight gain was greater than in those on continuous growth and, in those both groups, it was superior to animals on feed restriction. However, heavy animals showed body weight gain similar to control animals. Lambs can present compensatory growth, which depends on the maturity degree of the animals.

Thais Romano de Vasconcelos e Almeida; Juan Ramón Olalquiaga Pérez; O.J. Paula; Patrícia Maria de França; R.M. Assis

The effect of metabolizable energy level (ME), due to increasing levels of forage nitrogen detergent fiber (fNGF), on the carcass tecidual composition of 64 Santa Ines lambs was evaluated. Four treatments (diets) were: diet A- fNDF; diet B- 17.3%; of fNDF; diet C- 26.0% of fNDF; and diet D- 34.7% of 8.7% fNDF in the diet. Four animals of each treatment were slaughtered at 43, 83, 123, and 173 days. Lambs fed diets A and B, showed higher weight of bonne tissue (BT), muscular tissue (MT), fatty tissue (FT), and other tissues (OT) in cold carcass at 83 days of age. The percentage of BT in cold carcass of the lambs fed diets A and B was lower, and percentage of FT was higher, after 83 days of age. The regression of each variable on ME total intake (Mcal), for each treatment, suggested higher intensity of deposition of FT for lambs fed diet A.

The development of the testicule weight of Santa Ines lambs, fed different energy levels, was evaluated. Sixty-four lambs were distributed in four treatments: A - 8.7%; B - 17.3%; C - 26.0% and D - 34.7% of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) supplied by the diet forage, determining the variation of the metabolizable energy intake. Four animals from each treatment were slaughtered at pre-defined ages of 43 days, 83 days, 123 days and 173 days. After slaughtering, the testicles were separated from the epididimous and individually weighted. The animals fed diets A and B presented higher metabolizable energy intake (14.11Mcal/LW0.75), higher live weight (18.89kg and 17.09kg, respectively) and higher testicules weight (62.54g and 27.16g, respectively), indicating that the testicular development is highly dependent on the body development and the quantity of metabolizable energy intake. The prediction of the testicules weight by the scrotal circumference showed to be more efficient than the age or the live weight of the animals.
