Moderne Pkw-Dieselmotoren ermoglichen herausragende Fahrleistungen bei niedrigen CO2-Emissionen. Der europaweit steigende Dieselanteil bei Neuzulassungen unterstreicht die Attraktivitat dieses Antriebs. Gleichzeitig stellen strenge kunftige Emissionsgesetzgebungen den Dieselmotor weltweit vor grose Herausforderungen. Beispielsweise wird der Stickoxidgrenzwert in Europa im Jahr 2014 (EU6) um uber 70 % niedriger liegen als der heutige Grenzwert (EU4). Die Forschung von Bosch hat das Potenzial der homogenen Dieselverbrennung (HDC) zur Minimierung der NOx-Rohemissionen unter fahrzeugnahen Randbedingungen untersucht.

Basic principles of the diesel engine

The diesel engine is a compression-ignition engine in which the fuel and air are mixed inside the engine. The air required for combustion is highly compressed inside the combustion chamber. This generates high temperatures which are sufficient for the diesel fuel to spontaneously ignite when it is injected into the cylinder. The diesel engine thus uses heat to release the chemical energy contained within the diesel fuel and convert it into mechanical force.

Modern Diesel engines allow prominent road performances and low fuel consumption, resulting in a rising Diesel car fraction throughout Europe. At the same time stringent future emission legislation means a big challenge for Diesel engines. In Europe, for example, the expected 2014 nitrogen oxide threshold (Euro 6) will be approximately 30 % of the actual Euro 4 value. The Corporate Research of Bosch has been investigated the potential of Homo genous Diesel Combustion (HDC) to minimize NOx emissions under vehicle-compliant conditions.
