This paper proposes a tele-exercise classroom for computer exercises over the Japan Gigabit Network. The requirements for constructing the tele-exercise classroom be discussed. The main features of the classroom are (1) a teacher can monitor a stridents operations, (2) give instructions to the student, (3) show a demonstration to the student. Besides, exercise materials and/or problems happening during the exercise class can be presented by using a synchronous/asynchronous white board, and discussions between the teacher and a student (students) can be carried out through interactive real-time video/audio. We present a systems model which shows the configuration of the system, user computer terminal types, system modes, and action modes. In addition, the extendibility of the system is considered in the model.

With the rapid progress of information technologies in network and multimedia fields, to build an virtual educational environment over high-speed netxadwork becomes possible and is strongly requested. Many efforts have been made for development of virtual educational environments and/or virtual universities. However, there is still a lack of a practical virtual educational environment, which supports educational activities with high degree of interactive and personalized teaching and learning.

Research on Web education system with personalized navigations

Guozhen Zhang; Zixue Cheng; Aiguo He; Akio Koyama; Tongjun Huang

The research on Web-based learning is a hot research topic in recent years. But the personalized learning support is limited in most researches, because the human cognitive processes and educational psychology-based study method are not considered. Our previous work proposed a learning support system based on a study method known as SQ3R. The system provided a set of tools and a simple navigation function following the SQ3R. But the navigation in this system is not flexible enough to follow the substance of the SQ3R. In order to support and promote learners to learn as the SQ3R scheduled, in this paper, we give three types of navigations named as heuristic tool-using navigation, traffic-light progress navigation, and suggestive review navigation.

Design of an effective learning method SQ3R based distance learning system

Guozhen Zhang; Zixue Cheng; Tongjun Huang; Aiguo He; Akio Koyama

With the advantage of the scientific and the objective, many educational psychology-based learning methods, such as SQ3R learning method, meaningful reception learning method, SQ4R method, etc. are widely used in school education and individual study. At the same time, recently the WWW based education systems have flourished. But there are still few learning methods standing up for the WWW based learning, so the learning quality and efficiency cannot be ensured. We pose a method to design and implement educational psychology-based learning-support tools for individual learning in Web-based distance learning systems. This method is based on an effective study method SQ3R, which is a very popular learning method in school education in America and Europe. However the effective study method SQ3R cannot be directly applied into the Web-based distance learning system, so we design a method and a group of tools to support the learners using SQ3R in the Web-based distance learning system. Supported by this learning method, learners learning effectiveness can be greatly improved.

Distributed resource allocation is a fundamental problem in the development of distributed systems. Solutions for the problem are required to guarantee the mutual exclusive use of a resource, and avoid deadlock and starvation. Coteries are an efficient communication structure for solving mutual exclusion problem which is a special case of the distributed resource allocation problem. An extension of coterie called local coterie was proposed, to solve the distributed resource allocation problem, in a previous research. However, the method for constructing a local coterie proposed in the previous research is not so effective to construct efficient and robust local coteries. We propose a new method for constructing a local coterie that is more efficient due to the smaller size of a quorum and more robust to network failures due to bigger number of quorums than existing ones. Then, we show an algorithm using a local coterie to solve the distributed resource allocation problem. The algorithm guarantees the mutual exclusive access to a resource, deadlock-free, and starvation-free. Moreover, we discuss the message complexity of the algorithm.

Design of SQ3R-based support method for course contents provision in distance learning systems

Guozhen Zhang; Ken'ichi Saitou; Zixue Cheng; Akio Koyama; Aiguo He; Tongjun Huang

Proposes a learning support method for course provision in a distance learning system, based on the effective study method SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review). SQ3R was developed based on educational psychology. It has been proved that SQ3R can improve a learners learning efficiency in traditional school learning activities. However, the SQ3R study method cannot be directly transplanted into a Web-based distance learning system, so we have designed a method to support learners using SQ3R in such systems. By means of this support method, learners learning effectiveness can be greatly improved. We implemented the designed support method in a Web-based distance learning system that we designed previously. We evaluate this implementation through the undergraduate computer languages course at our university.

Pseudo-surface based network camera smart control

Aiguo He; Tongjun Huang; Zixue Cheng; Yue Zhao

Network camera is widely used in a lot of fields, such as remote monitoring, video conference. However, in almost network camera systems, the camera remote control is realized by using a remote controller or a personal computer with a crude user interface. This kind of control methods are not effective in the situation such as real time distance class where a smart operation is needed for the teacher. This article proposes a pseudo-surface based control method for network camera remote control. This method can improve the operativeness of the network camera control without using special devices other than a control computer. The effectiveness of this method was proven by a simulation system. In this article the principle of this method is described, and several examples of it are introduced.

An efficient distributed method for acceptable allocation of resources based on a concession policy

Tongjun Huang; Zixue Cheng; Akio Koyama; Aiguo He; Guozhen Zhang

Distributed resource allocation is a fundamental problem in construction of distributed systems. Though a lot of distributed algorithms have been developed for the problem, many of them are only designed to satisfy the desired quality of the requested resources, without considering acceptable range of the quality of the requested resources. In this paper we propose a new distributed algorithm employing a concession method, by which a process can transfer a reserved resource to another process, so that more processes can use the resources in the same time, to increase the efficiency and still keep the satisfaction for the quality of the resources in an acceptable range. We redefine the problem, and give the design and implementation of the algorithm in the paper.
