The agricultural scientific field is the object of this study, which aims to investigate the construction of the dominant position occupied by Embrapa between those who turn to this field of knowledge and to formulate some inferences. In achieving these purposes, we chose to use bibliometric and sociometric methods for a reading in a positivist paradigm approach, considering it as more friendly to the scientists in the agricultural field, asking them to reflect, facilitating it by using methods of the same nature as their research. The evidence collected suggests that the projection of Embrapa is not explained by scientific merit, which meant the need to probe alternative explanations, when we employed the concepts of Bourdieu for the task. We conclude that Embrapa is central in the scrutinized field in caring for the projection of an image, as real as it is, as long as it is not contested beyond non-systematized claims and those which dispense with objective data - which in itself cause further questioning, also referred to in this research.

We discuss social capital within the scope of the Brazilian Consortium for Research and Development of Coffee. The goal is to test the hypothesis that researchers’ social capital may be taken as a variable for the resources of the consortium that these researchers were able to secure in their research projects. It was necessary to develop a social capital metric, apply it, and verify the correlation between the volume of captured resources and the volume of social capital. The application of the network analysis in view of the researchers’ preferential choice and the quantification of the participation of these scientists in projects of the consortium enabled an estimation of a magnitude - the social capital - which could explain half the amount of variation obtained by each of the scientists responsible for research projects in the network.

Abstract This study examined the role of perception, its grounds and effects on the logic of the action of researchers when forming partnerships in their underlying Brazilian Consortium network for Coffee Research and Development. Supported by the institutional theory and the network theory, it started out with the assumption that the perception of agents (regarding the structural position/location, the network resources and the dynamics of resource appropriation) is relevant as it would be a determining factor when it came to inserting researchers in their collaborative network. The study resorted to: (a) the content analysis of interviews with researchers; (b) the sociometric analysis of co-authorship; (c) the sociometric analysis of the preferential choice among coffee researchers; and (d) the multivariate analysis of a database of the consortium sub-projects and responses to a survey of those responsible for subprojects. The results point out that the structural position of the agent in its network, though significant, does not determine the perception of these agents and this may have implications for their strategies. Along with this statement, it was possible to identify a group of regularities as well as a set of logical actions on the part of the scientists under study. It would be in this field that the researcher would practice his agency, where he monitors and perceives the resources and limitations of the network in which he and his colleagues are included and form partnerships.

ABSTRACT Political, social and economical transformations, more and more accelerated, change the businesses environment througout the world. In this context, companies of different branches, nationalities and sizes confront each other with aiming to win more market share or simply to guarantee their space in the market. This current context of constant environmental transformations demand from organizations, even family ones, new dynamics. Seeking to adaptat to this new situation and trying to give competitiveness to products, services and processes, the modern company often makes use of control and surveillance mechanisms. Thus, taking in view the social, political, and economical importance of the family organization, the present paper tried to investigate the interpretations of several social agents regarding the control and surveillance in the everyday working life. Through a qualitative-based approach this research studied the case of a family industry of clothes settled in the south of Minas Gerais. It was evidenced in the case analyzed that the control and the surveillance can be interpreted in way differentiated by the several social actors and that, to depend of the individuals hierarchical position, your perception will be different.

The business simulation is an interesting tool for active experimental learning used in business courses in order to bring together theory and practice, comprising the knowledge of strategy. In this case study, we analyze this capability into a constructivist perspective, distinguishing our work from others that focus on the effectiveness of these business games. Once established the coherence between the study’s purpose and its epistemological approach of learning, taken as a mental effort that is at the same time social and personal, this paper attempted to reveal which concepts of strategy the students internalize after a business game course. We carried out a content analysis of the texts written by the students in their final exam. The results, while showing the possibilities of agency problems in the course, led the research team to conclude that students set partial dimensions of strategy, conceived as: mutual construction, management of errors, course of action, intention, path dependence and learned lessons, which were put together as a possible collective discourse built from individual fragments.

The research effort requires financial resources, which are, partly, public. Enhancing the efficiency in the use of public resources could provide some compensation to Society for this kind of investment. For this reason, it is relevant to understand the specific dynamics of academia. This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of the knowledge diffusion process in the Brazilian Scientific field. To carry out the research, we applied bibliometric and sociometric analysis to address the evolution of the data envelopment analysis (DEA) technique, largely applied in the public sector. It consists of an objective, quantitative and, longitudinal study, with descriptive and explanatory purposes. Our main result is the relevance of the master’s and doctoral programs for DEAs diffusion. Finding this result was possible due to the methodological path adopted, different from other researches.

The stimulus of science and education to interdisciplinary efforts dates back decades. It seems that the movement has gained momentum and, in this dynamic, it is increasingly likely to be exposed to a discourse that has the advantages of interdisciplinarity and says nothing about its risks. Putting interdisciplinarity at stake was among the motivations for this qualitative and descriptive essay, which dealt with empirical data having a bibliographic and documentary nature, supplemented by interviews. The strategic objective was investigating peoples understanding within administrative science on the magnitude entropy, observed in the General Systems Theory (GST), which is seen as an interdisciplinary proposition with a current impact, sixty years after its introduction. It was concluded that Administration faces problems when working with this magnitude, because, while knowledge generated through the instrumental application of statistical interpretation of entropy realized itself as concrete, interpretations on entropy having a thermodynamic nature are likely to dispute, and they were ignored within the period, with negative and substantial implications, since entropy does not explain organizational disorder, such as embodied by Administration. This, though not proven, must be linked to the inability to deal with key concepts and laws imported from other disciplines, which, extrapolating, should be enough to make relative the combination of knowledge between knowledge fields: there are risks that interdisciplinarity produce and reproduce mistakes.
