Daniela Meirelles Andrade; Juvêncio Braga de Lima; Luiz Marcelo Antonialli; Cristiana Fernandaes de Muylder

Family businesses are found in the economies all over the world; they constitute a significant number of enterprises. Recent studies understand their special features from the perspective of social capital, differentiating the approach usually used in studies in Brazil. Therefore, we add a set of variables that are involved in this type of business, allowing the association of family business theme with the entrepreneurship. This phenomenon involves learning, innovation and change in both aspects of the organizational and social collectivity ambit. Thus, it is argued that the family’s social capital present the relationship between the members of a family and those with the community, and influences the practices of innovation, learning and change in the family businesses. This vision configured these companies as entrepreneurs. The objective of this study is to develop a model to understand the social family capital phenomenon dimension, which influences the process of learning, innovation and organizational change in family business. The assumptions were established by the family social capital present in a family business, linking it as an independent variable in relation to learning, change and innovation. Family businesses that develop the family social capital are used to facilitate organizational development characterized as entrepreneurial family businesses.

While a substantial body of literature has grown around the developing economies as the world’s main recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI) and its economic development and management practice consequences, much less attention has been paid to the determinants of outward FDI (OFDI) from developing economies becoming multinationals. Our aim is to assess whether OFDI from developing countries conforms to the mainstream international business literature of OFDI by comparing with new evidences for the character and evolution of recent OFDI found for developing economies. Our results suggest that while the mainstream FDI theories and frameworks regarding OFDI are suitable for developed economies, some important theoretical adjustments and refinements are needed in order to better explain the internationalization strategies of multinational corporations (MNCs) from developing economies.

The agricultural scientific field is the object of this study, which aims to investigate the construction of the dominant position occupied by Embrapa between those who turn to this field of knowledge and to formulate some inferences. In achieving these purposes, we chose to use bibliometric and sociometric methods for a reading in a positivist paradigm approach, considering it as more friendly to the scientists in the agricultural field, asking them to reflect, facilitating it by using methods of the same nature as their research. The evidence collected suggests that the projection of Embrapa is not explained by scientific merit, which meant the need to probe alternative explanations, when we employed the concepts of Bourdieu for the task. We conclude that Embrapa is central in the scrutinized field in caring for the projection of an image, as real as it is, as long as it is not contested beyond non-systematized claims and those which dispense with objective data - which in itself cause further questioning, also referred to in this research.

Capital social em um consórcio de pesquisa

Uajará Pessoa Araújo; Luiz Marcelo Antonialli; Mozar José de Brito; Fábio Müller Guerrini

We discuss social capital within the scope of the Brazilian Consortium for Research and Development of Coffee. The goal is to test the hypothesis that researchers’ social capital may be taken as a variable for the resources of the consortium that these researchers were able to secure in their research projects. It was necessary to develop a social capital metric, apply it, and verify the correlation between the volume of captured resources and the volume of social capital. The application of the network analysis in view of the researchers’ preferential choice and the quantification of the participation of these scientists in projects of the consortium enabled an estimation of a magnitude - the social capital - which could explain half the amount of variation obtained by each of the scientists responsible for research projects in the network.

Fernanda Maria Felício Macedo; Diego Luiz Teixeira Boava; Luiz Marcelo Antonialli

Scientific research in strategy, over time, has undergone transformations that can be analyzed as a trend in the production of knowledge in this field. This evolution takes place via the attempt to formulate a strategic knowledge toward for dynamics organizations and environments. Thus, the strategic knowledge developed so far is related to several tools to assist managers in decision-making process. However, there is strategy in other dimensions that exist per se and in themselves, but for various reasons are explored so little depth, as the strategist. This happens not for lack of interest among researchers, but by the needs of a practical nature, which are driven by the capitalist mode of production - ideology. This occurs when science studies the reality brought, not the origin or first principles. Thus, this paper investigates how the process strategy research, with the finding of the predominance of a functionalist view of research on this phenomenon. Given this context, emerged the need to to approach the topic from other perspectives, such as interpretation, for example. Thus, we intend to propose a other way to access the phenomenon from the strategic use of social phenomenology. This aspect, which belongs to the interpretative guidance paradigm, addressing issues such as intersubjectivity, alter ego, the world of life, the process of signification, typification, behavior and social action, motivation theory, construction of schemes typical ideas that have great potential to contribute to advance the understanding of the holistic strategy. The interpretive paradigm offers something extra to the strategy seeking to understand the phenomenon in light of the strategic strategist of subjectivity, considering his substantive rationality and life experience. It is noteworthy that this look is a proposal for further studies from other line of research paradigm. This approach did not show greater or lesser relevance to the current functionalist line. Therefore, this study intends to contribute to the advancement of research in strategy, although its scope is introductory, developing an innovative approach to the proposed strategic phenomenon.

Abstract After a decade of implementation of the Fiscal Responsibility Law (FRL), this study sought to answer the question: Had the states have reduced their debt levels? To answer this, data was collected on the website of the National Secretary of the Treasury from 26 Brazilian states for the period of 2000 to 2010. Accordingly, the main objective was to verify the effects the length of the LRF on debt levels of the Brazilian states. It was used specifically a multivariate statistical tools to check the tendency of reduction of the debt level. The results validated the proposed model of linear regression confirms the hypothesis of reducing public debt after the enactment of LRF and cluster analysis showed that 70% of states in 2010 were considered to have low debt levels. Therefore, pointed towards the sense that the LRF has contributed positively for a better control and reduction of public debts of the Brazilian states. Keywords: indebtedness; Fiscal Responsibility Law; public debt.

A percepção e as estratégias de ação do pesquisador de café em sua rede colaborativa

Uajará Pessoa Araújo; Luiz Marcelo Antonialli; Fábio Müller Guerrini; Renato Ferreira de Oliveira

Abstract This study examined the role of perception, its grounds and effects on the logic of the action of researchers when forming partnerships in their underlying Brazilian Consortium network for Coffee Research and Development. Supported by the institutional theory and the network theory, it started out with the assumption that the perception of agents (regarding the structural position/location, the network resources and the dynamics of resource appropriation) is relevant as it would be a determining factor when it came to inserting researchers in their collaborative network. The study resorted to: (a) the content analysis of interviews with researchers; (b) the sociometric analysis of co-authorship; (c) the sociometric analysis of the preferential choice among coffee researchers; and (d) the multivariate analysis of a database of the consortium sub-projects and responses to a survey of those responsible for subprojects. The results point out that the structural position of the agent in its network, though significant, does not determine the perception of these agents and this may have implications for their strategies. Along with this statement, it was possible to identify a group of regularities as well as a set of logical actions on the part of the scientists under study. It would be in this field that the researcher would practice his agency, where he monitors and perceives the resources and limitations of the network in which he and his colleagues are included and form partnerships.
