ABSTRACT Universities have been entrusted with the task of qualifying professionals for their future practice. In light of this, the present study analysed the competencies perceived by 80 physical education students of a public university in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, enrolled in the subject Outdoor Adventure Sports. An exploratory descriptive investigation was conducted with a qualitative approach. The content analysis technique was applied, and analysis categories were created according to a specific professional competence model. The findings indicate that the students perceived themselves as more competent in social/vocational, intra-professional, ethical and theoretical aspects of the profession, respectively. This study demonstrates that principles and values of outdoor adventure sports could contribute to the perception and development of some competencies, depending on the context and forms of mediation.

This essay sought to characterize and discuss sport coaches’ learning contexts and situations, establishing a trajectory after significant episodes in that process. Specific literature indicates that coaches have emphasized different sources of knowledge, notably practice experiences as athletes, observing their peers, sharing information, and reflecting on their practice. Coaches’ professional learning can be understood as a process of sports socialization that begins in childhood and continues throughout life, where their participation focuses on learning situations in informal contexts.

This descriptive-interpretative study sought to investigate Physical Education undergraduate students’ perceptions about their supervised practicum as sports coaches. We interviewed nine students regularly enrolled in supervised practicum for sports coaches at a Brazilian public university, and data underwent Content Analysis. Results indicated that the students’ main activity was to assist their practicum advisor. The students evaluated positively their knowledge acquisition in curricular practicum situations at the university and the experiences shared with colleagues, while they viewed negatively the lack of courses covering pedagogical practices in sport and not being welcome at certain practicum places. As suggestions for improving the practicum, students indicated the need to offer more areas for it as well as closer relations between the university/advisors and places for practicum/their professionals.

The purpose of this study was to explore the learning pathways of five Brazilian surf coach developers, in order to understand how they became coach developers. A case study was conducted with five surf coach developers working in the sport participation context, and linked to a legally organized Brazilian surf federation. Three main research topics guided the semi-structured interviews: participants’ experiences as a surfer, as a surf coach, and as a coach developer. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to explore the participants’ perceptions of the experiences around becoming a surf coach developer. The study revealed a pattern of formative experiences for the participants, across their lives and careers. Their experiences as a surfer and as a surf coach, as well as their exposure to the surfing environment and their contact with significant others, influenced in their engagement in surfing and in the surf coach context; leading them eventually to the desire to share knowledge with others. Becoming a surf coach developer in this study corresponded to a mutual socialization process across a lifetime. This process was marked by situated socio-cultural aspects of different life phases, strongly influenced by the social relations established in immediate contexts (family) and with other specific groups (surfers, coaches, and developers).

The aim of this study was to analyze the pedagogical actions on surf teaching based on the understanding of surfing coaches developers. Five experienced developers were interviewed and the information obtained was analyzed through case study procedures. The results indicate that the pedagogical activities for the surfing coach should be aimed at adapting its intervention to an ever-changing practice environment and to meet the learners expectations. It was concluded that the surf coachs actions must be guided by management of the risks offered by surfing as well as by ensuring appropriate levels of risk that favor learning the sport.
