Methodology implications in automotive product–service systems: a systematic literature review

Omar Sabbagh; Mohd Nizam Ab Rahman; Wan Rosmanira Ismail; Wan Mohd Hirwani Wan Hussain

The worldwide automotive industry sector has been experiencing a period of noticeable growth and success, especially since overcoming the financial crisis in 2008; however, this success is accompanied by remarkable erosion in the sales profit margin, causing automakers to invest in the after-sales and product–service system (PSS) sectors. The purpose of this review is twofold. First, it establishes an understanding of the automotive PSS concept by summarising and discussing the objectives, methodologies and findings of these studies. Second, it develops a framework to classify 102 articles analysed in depth and dating from 1999 to 2015 according to their adopted methodologies with an extended analysis of the most-used data collection instruments and analysis tools. It is evident that there is a tendency to utilise quantitative methods despite the expediency of implementing mixed methods in recent studies. This paper provides meaningful insights into the research methodologies, and for an audience consisting of general researchers and practitioners with an interest in conducting research in the automotive PSS and production disciplines, it represents a guideline to choose the appropriate research methodology, taking into consideration the advantages and disadvantages of each one.

Omar Sabbagh; Mohd Nizam Ab Rahman; Wan Rosmanira Ismail; Wan Mohd Hirwani Wan Hussain

ABSTRACT The purpose of this article is to investigate the differential influence of product quality and service quality on customer satisfaction (CS) along with the interaction role of warranty presence in the context of automotive dealerships. Survey-based research methodology is adopted in which the population are the car owners who perform repair and maintenance jobs in authorized service centres. It is found that the warranty moderation role is supported wherein the relationship between service quality and CS is strengthened by the warranty presence, contrary to the insignificant relationship between product quality and CS influenced by the warranty moderator; besides, the empirical results provide an evidence that the CS value relies on metrics comprising operational measures for service quality and product quality. The outcome of this study contributes to sensitizing the decision makers from manufacturing and service disciplines to the interdependencies and the prerequisite for overall collaborative development. This study presents the first systematic approach that differentiates the influence of product quality and service quality on CS, wherein the warranty service is primarily introduced as a moderator affecting the antecedent relationship in the context of automotive dealerships.

The purpose of this study is to determine and examine Internet marketing strategies that can be implemented by medical doctors/practitioners in Malaysia. Despite the increasing importance among many organizations of the Internet as a marketing tool, few studies have been conducted to examine the potential of the Internet as a marketing platform for medical doctors in the Malaysian context. The results reveal that compared to offline advertising, Internet marketing is a better mechanism and an important strategy for medical doctors. In this work, the advantages of using Internet marketing are highlighted, and implications for marketing strategy are demonstrated. We believe that Internet marketing can help Malaysian doctors improve their customer service and performance.

Rosilah Hassan; Abdullah A. Al-khatib; Wan Mohd Hirwani Wan Hussain

A Meta-Search engine is an ideal tool that takes search expressions and sends them out to multiple search engines. It then returns the categorized results to the user. For example, we established a Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Patent meta-search engine that takes patents from multiple search engines, such as Google patent and Patent Mall. This website allows UKM students to research patents inside Patent Mall, the UKM database and the Google patent search engine. This study focuses on web design and its development using several tools and programming languages, such as open source ASP.Net and SQL Server Database. A few of these are used to retrieve information from search engines, for example, the Google patent application programming interface (API) and Post Query to Patent Mall. In this project, we establish a new framework for the first meta-search engine that specialises in patents, which will minimize useless pages in search results. Additionally, the UKM database contains private university UKM patents. The UKM patent meta-search will extract (or retrieve) these patents depending on a Language-Integrated Query (LINQ) that is used for conveniently extracting and processing patents from the UKM database. Finally, the UKM meta-search is a new solution to the problem of obtaining requested information quickly.

Commercialization of universitys inventions has become an important topic to Malaysian universities. Important outcomes from this commercialization are patent, spin off company and also how much profits generated from these mechanism. Most of academic writers always argue on the roles of the Technology Transfer Office (TTO), researchers and policy makers as main key players in commercialization process. However, there is still little research debating on the role of lawyers who have been involved as the agent for the university in the process of applying IP rights for researchers. Moreover, lawyers help the university to commercialize universitys research more easily to the public because they are the one who involved in the commercialization process from the start. Another important element is that the nature of their profession which is closely connected to the professionalism, integrity and trust places them as the most relevant referral point to help university in the commercialization process. This paper will look at how lawyers may market the innovations of the university when they simultaneously market their legal skills online. The paper recommends that lawyers who have been appointed as legal advisors for universities may act as the online marketing agent for the university.

This paper analyses the importance of embedding the importance of commercialisation of University’s research in the Engineering education in Malaysia. By conducting courses or program about this commercialization aspects by the engineering faculty, the commercialization process for the university will be sustained in future. The literature so far reviewed shows that engineering education processes have been extensively studied to study the best mechanism and model for engineering education in Malaysia. Aiming to contribute to such literature, we look at the current practice of Engineering Faculties under the Malaysian Research Universities in order to see to what extent aspects of commercialization of university’s research are incorporated in their syllabus. We found that the aspect of the commercialization of university‘s innovation are less exposed to engineering students in Malaysia. This paper suggests that it is vital to incorporate the commercialization of university’s research aspects into the engineering syllabus to develop the culture of entrepreneurship among engineering students which eventually assists the university to commercialize its’research.
