Concept cars have their own styling process. Because of the big media interest they give a big opportunity to bring newest technology with styling ideas to different fairgrounds. The LED technology in the concept cars Audi Pikes Peak, Nuvolari and Le Mans will be explained. Further outlook for the Audi LED strategy starting with LED Daytime Running Lamp will be given. The close work between styling and technical engineers results in those concept cars and further technical innovations based on LED technologies.

All-LED Headlights for the Audi R8

The LED headlamp of the Audi R8 is the first representative of a completely new generation of headlamps, using only light emitting diodes (LED) as light source. Automotive Lighting and Audi have done a pioneering work in the fields of styling, technology integration, lighting, mechanics and additionally in the regulatory approval. Also in the car LED are the light source of the future due to their low energy consumption, long lifetime and the easy electronical modulation.

Ideas for Next Lighting Generations in Digitalization and Autonomous Driving

Digitalization in Industry and Society is progressing quickly. Up to now, just 5 static and standard lighting applications have been dominating in the U.S. (Low/ High Beam, Daytime Running Lamp Turn Indicator & Position Lamp). The global interest in standardization of light driven messages from autonomous vehicles to other traffic participants has opened new research needs and research findings. In Europe, GTB has established a working group dedicated to this topic. The article will discuss the possible contribution of signalling and lighting functions to Digitalization and Autonomous driving by explaining the first elements of functional definition and research results.
