The spectral line profile was assumed Gaussian and the He a spectral line width as a flash lamp was measured by a PET crystal spectrograph. In Fig. 3, thus calculated photo-pumping efficiencies for each accelerating distance z and experimental result are shown. The best agreement with the experimentally observed profile was obtained for z = 300 pm. This value was equal to 2 to 3 times of the laser-spot diameters.
