The objective of this qualitative study was to identify the knowledge from the family about the chronic condition in childhood, as well as specific care to be given in their home. The data was collected at the pediatric clinic of the Lauro Wanderley University Hospital in Brazil, involving seven care takers of children diagnosed with a chronic disease between January and April of 2008. The collection technique was the semi-structured interview. Data interpretation followed the thematic analysis method. The results reveal that the information given to the family has been given in a very subtle way and the mothers feel difficulties in learning the orientations, given the technical and specific medical vocabulary. This impedes the development of autonomy in their administration of care for the child who has a chronic disease. Mothers’ knowledge about their child’s disease is not enough for the development of home care. The health team needs to interact with the family, creating the domino effect towards a process of autonomous home care. DEsCRIPTORs: Child hospitalized. Chronic disease. Family. Enfermedad cronica. Familia.

This study aimed to better understand the meaning of chronic disease for school-age children. It involves qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory research. The field-research was performed in a pediatric clinic of a University Hospital in Brazil. Seven pediatric inpatients in the aforementioned institution with chronic illness, aged seven to twelve years of age participated in the study. The data was collected via semi-structured interviews and followed thematic interpretation principles. The results showed that these children experience chronic disease as something which imposes limitations and difficulties on their daily lives. However, there have been reports of children showing the understanding of disease as something normal, evidencing that they don ́t know what it is to live without experiencing the illness. The chronic illness leads the child to try to understand the situation and to cooperate with the treatment. It may promote the development of onerous feelings like fear, shame, sadness, and doubts concerning the past, present, and future. DESCRIPTORS: Chronic disease. Child hospitalized. Pediatric nursing. Chronic disease in childhood affects the family social relations. The social network can contribute for a better coping by giving support. This work aims to analyze the fragilities of the social network of families in this condition. It is a qualitative study conducted in a public hospital of Paraíba, from April to June 2011, using genogram, ecomap and semi-structured interview with seven family members of children with chronic disease. The thematic analysis of the results helped to characterize the network and understand the social interactions in the course of the disease and the types of support received. The empirical category (dis)articulation of the social network and the modifications in family routine was built in this process and pointed the diversity of the social network composition, emphasizing that the social support provided by the network is significant, however, not always continuous and suitable with the needs of the families.

Nursing care systematization (NCS) as a tool in the care of hospitalized adolescent is still underutilized by nurses in their routine. The objective was to apply an instrument of NCS, which comprises the steps of the nursing process to a teenager hospitalized with a diagnosis of sickle cell anemia. This instrument is based on basic human needs of Horta, which underlie the process of NCS used in the study hospital. NCS is composed of five phases: Historical nursing, nursing diagnoses, planning, intervention, and evolution. The diagnosis of a more severe general condition was pain, and care for the adolescent in pain relief has contributed to the achievement of results. The use of the instrument serves as a guide for the NCS to the hospitalized adolescent, allowing documentation of the actions clearly and objectively, facilitating communication and continuing care. Objective: Describe the characteristics of the evolution of nurses in the medical records of patients admitted to a school hospital in the city of Joao Pessoa, PB, Brazil. Methods: This is a descriptive, exploratory and documental, embodied in a quantitative approach. The source of study data were the records of patients of the Pediatric Clinic of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (IPD), who were in the Statistical and Medical Archive Service (SMAS), in a time frame from April to October 2015. The analysis the data was performed, from the descriptive statistics, using a statistical software. Results: Through the data collected, two characteristics were observed in the records: the general aspects and the focus of care. In general aspects, the developments were characterized as being absent from erasures, use of correctives, grammatical errors, non-standard abbreviations and generic terms. They proved to be legible and clear, using scientific terminology, the date and time stamp. However, it was found that there are many blanks. As the focus of care, the records contemplated the general condition, level of consciousness, respiratory pattern and eliminations. Conclusions: Based on the foregoing, the concreteness of this study shows us that nurses need to be aware in order to provide a more qualified registration and, above all, standardized, ensuring continuity of care and promoting the evaluation of the implemented care.
