Hydration and Pasting Properties of Oat (Avena sativa) Flour.

Three oat cultivars and one oat breeding line were evaluated for chemical, hydration and pasting properties. Protein, starch and β-glucan levels ranged 11.13∼14.37, 56.37∼64.86 and 3.44∼4.76%, respectively. The oat cultivars Daeyang and Seonyang contained higher β-glucan levels of 4.76 and 4.35%. The Daeyang variety had a higher water absorption index (WAI) of 2.83∼3.35 (g/g), but a lower water solubility index (WSI) of 8.67 ∼11.08%. Daeyang and Seonyang cultivars showed higher peak and trough viscosity, but lower breakdown and setback, indicating that they easily swell, and thus could possibly provide the desirable viscosity of an oat product. The β-glucan levels were correlated positively with WAI, peak and trough viscosity, and negatively to WSI, breakdown and setback viscosity.

Quality Characteristics and Antioxidant Activity of Yogurt Added with Whole Barley Floura

Department of Environmental & Chemical Engineering, Seonam UniversityAbstract In this study, a yogurt containing skim milk powder and whole barley flour was fermented with lactic acidbacteria, and its quality and properties were estimated. The yogurts with 1% and 3% barley flour had lower pH values,higher titratable acidity, and higher Brix values than the control. In addition, the viable cell counts were lower andviscosity was higher. The value of L was low, and the values of a and b were high. The yogurt with 3% barley flourhad more lactic acid than the control and showed a substantial increase in the amount of acetic acid. β-Glucan contentand antioxidant activity increased with the amount of barley flour added. In sensory evaluation, there was a similarpreference for the yogurt with 3% barley flour and the control, and as the barley flour content increased, the preferencedecreased. his experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of nitrogen top dressing levels on the growth, feed value, and anthocyanin content for developing functional feed of colored barley. Growth Damage and Alteration of Cellular Tissue of Barley Infected by Barley yellow mosaic virus

The damage of plant growth and alteration of cellular tissues of barley infected by Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) was explored. The infected plots significantly damaged in all of measured factors by the disease. In severely diseased plant, the viral infection affected on plant growth like as shorten culm length about 25cm, 36% constrained ratio, comparing to healthy. The yield decreased over 70% in diseased plots by fewer numbers of spike and kernel per square meter and spike, respectively. BaYMV constructed typical inclusion body like a pinwheel type inside barley leaves, and the infection affected on cellular elongation or growth not cell division in examined three parts as stem, neck of panicle and node, related to dwarfness of infected barley. The stem tissues were most severely affected on cell growth as restrained epidermis cell length in diameter and vascular bundle size. In neck of panicle tissues, distribution and size of tissues of fiber and cortex parts, respectively, showed differences between healthy and infected plants. In node part, healthy plant showed bigger tissue size as 1.5 times than infected plant. Theses results suggest that BaYMV infection could affect on the cell growth not cell division, and which resulted shorten culm length in plant growth and decreased yield, finally.

Effect of Film Layers and Storing Period on the Fermentation Quality of Whole Crop Barley Silage

Animal bio, Chanbuk National University, Jeonju, 561-756ABSTRACTThis study was undertaken to characterize feed value and silage quality according to storage period and film layers for whole-crop barley silage. The crude protein(CP) content increased in all silage during the storage periods compared to those before silage,this content slightly increased over the prolonged storage period but it was not significant(p>0.05). Depending on the film layers of silage, 6 layers were higher than 4 layers. The neutral detergent fiber(NDF) and acid detergent fiber(ADF) contents also increased in all silage during storage periods compared to those before silage(P<0.05), but they were maintained at similar levels during the storage period. Depending on the film layers of silage, 6 layers were higher than 4 layers. The total digestible nutrients(TDN) content decreased in all silage during the storage periods. However, it was maintained at a similar level for the duration of each storage period. Depending on the film layers of silage, 6 layers were lower than 4 layers. The pH value was decreased during the prolonged storage period and depending on the film layers, 6 layers were lower than 4 layers.In the organic acid contents during the prolonged storage period, lactic acid increased, acetic acid was lower, and butyric acid was significantly higher(p<0.05). Depending on the film layers, 6 layers showed higher levels of lactic acid and lower levels of butyric acid(p<0.05). Therefore, these results showed that 6 layer wrapping was advantageous for long term storage of whole crop barley silage, while also indicating that it is desirable to use 4 layer wrapping within a six month period.(Key words :Whole crop barley, Storing period, Film layers, Fermentation quality)

An Easy Seedling Method to Screen Resistance of Powdery Mildew of Barley and Wheat

This study was conducted to develop a easy seedling method to test large amounts of barley and wheat cultivars for resistance of powdery mildew. In addition, we also examined the resistance of genetic resources that have been used in barley and wheat breeding programs in Korea. This seedling test used paper bag with seeds can be completed within three weeks. to-day seedlings were available to inoculation and 8 days was needed for result reading. This method can test at least 180 collections at one time. we can identify the two resistant types by leave symptoms showed non infection and necrotic spots. Among the 79 Korean barley cultivars, only two cultivar, `Sangrokbori` and `Dajinbori` were resistant and `Jejubori` showed moderate resistant. There was no resistant in hulless barley and wheat cultivars. It was same results in comparison of earlier resistant reports in field test. We confirm that this method could using in test of powdery mildew resistance in barley and wheat. Among the 1,401 genetic resources using in Korean breeding program, malting barley has more resistant collections comparing to 796 hulled and hulless barley and 273 wheat germplasms.

Covered Barley(Hordeum vulgare L.) Variety, ‘Hyeyang’ with BaYMV Resistance, High Yield and Good Malt Quality

Improvement of winter hardiness, lodging resistance and good quality have been recently received more attention by covered barley(Hordeum vulgare L.) breeders than ever in Korea. ‘Hyeyang’, a new covered barley cultivar with early maturing and high yield was developed by the National Institute of Crop Science, RDA in 2010. It was derived from the cross between‘Milyang87’and‘Wolsung8120’with good quality. The initial cross was done in 1999 and the selected line, ‘Iksan432’ (YB4494-B-B-21-2), showed high yield and good quality characteristics under yield trial test from 2008 to 2010. The following is the characteristics of‘Hyeyang’that is characterized as the vernalization of I, green leaf, compact spike and long rough awns. The heading date of‘Hyeyang’were similar to‘Olbori’. The culm length was 82 cm which was 6 cm shorter than‘Olbori’. It showed the spike length of 4.3 cm, 798 spikes / m 2 , 56 grains / spike and 26.7 g for 1,000 grains weight. It showed similar winter hardiness and stronger resistance to barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) compare to‘Olbori’. It showed higher diastatic power 235DP than that of check cultivar, ‘Olbori’. Average yield of ‘Hyeyang’ was 4.44 MT/ha in the regional yield trials carried out in four location at double cropping system in Korea from 2008 to 2010, which was 8 percent higher than ‘Olbori’. ‘Hyeyang’would be suitable for the area above –8°C of daily minimum temperature in January in Korean peninsula.

Optimal Drainage Time of Barley Seeding Synchronized with Rice Harvesting in Paddy Field

We have carried out the experiment to investigate optimal drainage time of barley seeding synchronized with rice harvesting in paddy field. Number of emerged barley seedling on moist paddy field was less than that of common paddy field. It is very hard to plow using combine owing to long time to work on wet condition compared to drying condition of paddy field. According to the drainage time, growth and yield of barley were not significantly different. However, late drainage time decreased the spikes per m 2 . Rice yield and 1,000 usked rice grain weight were not significant depending on drainage times at 15 days, 20 days and 25 days before barley seeding. The range of 1,000 husked rice grain weight was 21.7~22.2 g on different drainage conditions. In results, on considering of soil hardness and time of labor, the optimal contents of soil moisture was about 33%. This study reveals that drainage time at 20 days before barley seeding is proper to increase seedlings and yield.
