Knowledge and protocol on collaborative design selection

Christiono Utomo; Yani Rahmawati

There are factors need to be considered and implemented in design, and it needs multiple expertise with different backgrounds, expertise, and experiences to deal with it. Collaborative design is conducted with purposes to produce best fit design and to solve problems. As a process of multi disciplines and teamwork, collaboration becomes an important role in the process of design selection. This paper presents the knowledge and protocol process in a process of design collaboration. The methodology combines value analysis method, decision method and multi agent development method. Prometheus model is used for developing an agent system based on the protocol. Collaboration consists of an exchange of proposals between agents. Computer-mediated work increases the comprehension, the readability and, the objectivity of the decision-making. Results presented are knowledge with a model of group decision-making using automated collaboration based on five-decision maker preference and concept of the protocol.

Automated negotiation for non-producing management decision

Christiono Utomo; Nenny Krisnawaty; Yani Rahmawati

There are two options for managing the unused equipment, i.e. preservation and abandonment. The decision for non-producing cluster management takes long discussion as it involves conflicting interests between a division of field operation which prefer abandonment for cost saving purpose and a division of geo science which prefer preservation to anticipate future field revival by applying new technology. There are different concern caused by differing preferences, experiences, and background therefore a support system is required to evaluate and rank the solution alternatives. Other technical and non-technical aspects need to be incorporated in the decision making in order to ensure a thorough assessment. After individual decision maker evaluate the alternative, agents negotiate the best solution. It needs automated negotiation for conflict resolution and decision making.

Media support for elicitation in virtual multidisciplinary design

Yani Rahmawati; Christiono Utomo

Conflicts and disputes are usually found in multidisciplinary design process. Well maintained conflicts will lead to support the achievement of best design. Conversely, the bad ones will lead to failures and unfinished design. Competition and also markets needs and desires have encouraged industries as well as their design managers to innovate their product design, especially in construction industries. Rapid development of commercial properties has forced design teams to innovate their works. Multidisciplinary parties are needed in dealing with this reality. Experts with various disciplines and backgrounds are essentially involved in design process. Virtual design turns into practical solution in dealing with the issues of time and place availability between parties. Additionally, technical conflicts appear as result of failure in managing the process of design development and its design elicitation. This issue is found to be the most frequent issue that is able to drive the success of virtual design. This study aims to reveal critical factors of media support for elicitation in virtual design process through exploratory studies. First, the factors are revealed from literature and case study, than they are confirmed to design managers. Depth analysis on these factors is carried out by two statistical methods. The analyses use comparison of mean and standard deviation and also factor analysis. Communication is found to be the most critical factor that is needed to be mainly considered in using the media support to facilitate the virtual design process. Conceptual framework that is resulted from this study will contribute to develop research in collaborative design as well as communication system and media support for virtual multidisciplinary design.

A framework of knowledge management for successful group decision in design process

Yani Rahmawati; Christiono Utomo; Nadjadji Anwar; Nugroho Priyo Negoro; Cahyono Bintang Nurcahyo

Knowledge acquires collaboration in producing innovations. Diversities, i.e. expertise, backgrounds, and also resources, are essential for the collaboration. Hence, the activities of sharing, transferring and also exchanging resources between diverse participants become vital in realizing the innovation. This circumstance is recently found in the design process of buildings. The development of buildings requirements leads to complexities in its design. Collaboration is fundamentally needed to attain best design. Knowledge Management found to be essential factor for the collaboration practices. The practices are also known as Group Decision. This study intends to discover issues, roles, and impacts of Knowledge Management towards successful Group Decision in design process. Literature review is used to build the conceptual model, and the conceptual model is empirically confirmed to designers and consultants of high-rise buildings. The empirical data is analyzed by using correlation and regression analysis. The results of this study are conceptual and empirical model of Knowledge Management towards successful Group Decision. Both models can be used to support the development of Computer Supported Collaborative Design in supporting the achievement of successful Group Decision works.
