Deep Subjecthood: Higher-Order Grammatical Features in Multilingual BERT

We investigate how Multilingual BERT (mBERT) encodes grammar by examining how the high-order grammatical feature of morphosyntactic alignment (how different languages define what counts as a "subject") is manifested across the embedding spaces of different languages. To understand if and how morphosyntactic alignment affects contextual embedding spaces, we train classifiers to recover the subjecthood of mBERT embeddings in transitive sentences (which do not contain overt information about morphosyntactic alignment) and then evaluate them zero-shot on intransitive sentences (where subjecthood classification depends on alignment), within and across languages. We find that the resulting classifier distributions reflect the morphosyntactic alignment of their training languages. Our results demonstrate that mBERT representations are influenced by high-level grammatical features that are not manifested in any one input sentence, and that this is robust across languages. Further examining the characteristics that our classifiers rely on, we find that features such as passive voice, animacy and case strongly correlate with classification decisions, suggesting that mBERT does not encode subjecthood purely syntactically, but that subjecthood embedding is continuous and dependent on semantic and discourse factors, as is proposed in much of the functional linguistics literature. Together, these results provide insight into how grammatical features manifest in contextual embedding spaces, at a level of abstraction not covered by previous work.

Detecting Bias in Transfer Learning Approaches for Text Classification

Classification is an essential and fundamental task in machine learning, playing a cardinal role in the field of natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision (CV). In a supervised learning setting, labels are always needed for the classification task. Especially for deep neural models, a large amount of high-quality labeled data are required for training. However, when a new domain comes out, it is usually hard or expensive to acquire the labels. Transfer learning could be an option to transfer the knowledge from a source domain to a target domain. A challenge is that these two domains can be different, either on the feature distribution, or the class distribution for the nature of the samples. In this work, we evaluate some existing transfer learning approaches on detecting the bias of imbalanced classes including traditional and deep models. Besides, we propose an approach to bridge the gap of the domain class imbalance issue.

DiSCoL: Toward Engaging Dialogue Systems through Conversational Line Guided Response Generation

Having engaging and informative conversations with users is the utmost goal for open-domain conversational systems. Recent advances in transformer-based language models and their applications to dialogue systems have succeeded to generate fluent and human-like responses. However, they still lack control over the generation process towards producing contentful responses and achieving engaging conversations. To achieve this goal, we present \textbf{DiSCoL} (\textbf{Di}alogue \textbf{S}ystems through \textbf{Co}versational \textbf{L}ine guided response generation). DiSCoL is an open-domain dialogue system that leverages conversational lines (briefly \textbf{convlines}) as controllable and informative content-planning elements to guide the generation model produce engaging and informative responses. Two primary modules in DiSCoL's pipeline are conditional generators trained for 1) predicting relevant and informative convlines for dialogue contexts and 2) generating high-quality responses conditioned on the predicted convlines. Users can also change the returned convlines to \textit{control} the direction of the conversations towards topics that are more interesting for them. Through automatic and human evaluations, we demonstrate the efficiency of the convlines in producing engaging conversations.

Dialect Identification in Nuanced Arabic Tweets Using Farasa Segmentation and AraBERT

This paper presents our approach to address the EACL WANLP-2021 Shared Task 1: Nuanced Arabic Dialect Identification (NADI). The task is aimed at developing a system that identifies the geographical location(country/province) from where an Arabic tweet in the form of modern standard Arabic or dialect comes from. We solve the task in two parts. The first part involves pre-processing the provided dataset by cleaning, adding and segmenting various parts of the text. This is followed by carrying out experiments with different versions of two Transformer based models, AraBERT and AraELECTRA. Our final approach achieved macro F1-scores of 0.216, 0.235, 0.054, and 0.043 in the four subtasks, and we were ranked second in MSA identification subtasks and fourth in DA identification subtasks.

Did Aristotle Use a Laptop? A Question Answering Benchmark with Implicit Reasoning Strategies

A key limitation in current datasets for multi-hop reasoning is that the required steps for answering the question are mentioned in it explicitly. In this work, we introduce StrategyQA, a question answering (QA) benchmark where the required reasoning steps are implicit in the question, and should be inferred using a strategy. A fundamental challenge in this setup is how to elicit such creative questions from crowdsourcing workers, while covering a broad range of potential strategies. We propose a data collection procedure that combines term-based priming to inspire annotators, careful control over the annotator population, and adversarial filtering for eliminating reasoning shortcuts. Moreover, we annotate each question with (1) a decomposition into reasoning steps for answering it, and (2) Wikipedia paragraphs that contain the answers to each step. Overall, StrategyQA includes 2,780 examples, each consisting of a strategy question, its decomposition, and evidence paragraphs. Analysis shows that questions in StrategyQA are short, topic-diverse, and cover a wide range of strategies. Empirically, we show that humans perform well (87%) on this task, while our best baseline reaches an accuracy of ??66%.

Differentiable Generative Phonology

The goal of generative phonology, as formulated by Chomsky and Halle (1968), is to specify a formal system that explains the set of attested phonological strings in a language. Traditionally, a collection of rules (or constraints, in the case of optimality theory) and underlying forms (UF) are posited to work in tandem to generate phonological strings. However, the degree of abstraction of UFs with respect to their concrete realizations is contentious. As the main contribution of our work, we implement the phonological generative system as a neural model differentiable end-to-end, rather than as a set of rules or constraints. Contrary to traditional phonology, in our model, UFs are continuous vectors in R d , rather than discrete strings. As a consequence, UFs are discovered automatically rather than posited by linguists, and the model can scale to the size of a realistic vocabulary. Moreover, we compare several modes of the generative process, contemplating: i) the presence or absence of an underlying representation in between morphemes and surface forms (SFs); and ii) the conditional dependence or independence of UFs with respect to SFs. We evaluate the ability of each mode to predict attested phonological strings on 2 datasets covering 5 and 28 languages, respectively. The results corroborate two tenets of generative phonology, viz. the necessity for UFs and their independence from SFs. In general, our neural model of generative phonology learns both UFs and SFs automatically and on a large-scale.

Disambiguatory Signals are Stronger in Word-initial Positions

Psycholinguistic studies of human word processing and lexical access provide ample evidence of the preferred nature of word-initial versus word-final segments, e.g., in terms of attention paid by listeners (greater) or the likelihood of reduction by speakers (lower). This has led to the conjecture -- as in Wedel et al. (2019b), but common elsewhere -- that languages have evolved to provide more information earlier in words than later. Information-theoretic methods to establish such tendencies in lexicons have suffered from several methodological shortcomings that leave open the question of whether this high word-initial informativeness is actually a property of the lexicon or simply an artefact of the incremental nature of recognition. In this paper, we point out the confounds in existing methods for comparing the informativeness of segments early in the word versus later in the word, and present several new measures that avoid these confounds. When controlling for these confounds, we still find evidence across hundreds of languages that indeed there is a cross-linguistic tendency to front-load information in words.

Discussion Tracker: Supporting Teacher Learning about Students' Collaborative Argumentation in High School Classrooms

Teaching collaborative argumentation is an advanced skill that many K-12 teachers struggle to develop. To address this, we have developed Discussion Tracker, a classroom discussion analytics system based on novel algorithms for classifying argument moves, specificity, and collaboration. Results from a classroom deployment indicate that teachers found the analytics useful, and that the underlying classifiers perform with moderate to substantial agreement with humans.

Do as I mean, not as I say: Sequence Loss Training for Spoken Language Understanding

Spoken language understanding (SLU) systems extract transcriptions, as well as semantics of intent or named entities from speech, and are essential components of voice activated systems. SLU models, which either directly extract semantics from audio or are composed of pipelined automatic speech recognition (ASR) and natural language understanding (NLU) models, are typically trained via differentiable cross-entropy losses, even when the relevant performance metrics of interest are word or semantic error rates. In this work, we propose non-differentiable sequence losses based on SLU metrics as a proxy for semantic error and use the REINFORCE trick to train ASR and SLU models with this loss. We show that custom sequence loss training is the state-of-the-art on open SLU datasets and leads to 6% relative improvement in both ASR and NLU performance metrics on large proprietary datasets. We also demonstrate how the semantic sequence loss training paradigm can be used to update ASR and SLU models without transcripts, using semantic feedback alone.

Does Dialog Length matter for Next Response Selection task? An Empirical Study

In the last few years, the release of BERT, a multilingual transformer based model, has taken the NLP community by storm. BERT-based models have achieved state-of-the-art results on various NLP tasks, including dialog tasks. One of the limitation of BERT is the lack of ability to handle long text sequence. By default, BERT has a maximum wordpiece token sequence length of 512. Recently, there has been renewed interest to tackle the BERT limitation to handle long text sequences with the addition of new self-attention based architectures. However, there has been little to no research on the impact of this limitation with respect to dialog tasks. Dialog tasks are inherently different from other NLP tasks due to: a) the presence of multiple utterances from multiple speakers, which may be interlinked to each other across different turns and b) longer length of dialogs. In this work, we empirically evaluate the impact of dialog length on the performance of BERT model for the Next Response Selection dialog task on four publicly available and one internal multi-turn dialog datasets. We observe that there is little impact on performance with long dialogs and even the simplest approach of truncating input works really well.
