Aging is a universal and yet diverse phenomenon. This paper presents a review on the topic of diversity in the context of the aging populations in Brazil and Canada. The diversity of the aging population in both countries is discussed in terms of gender, ethnicity, age groups and living conditions while considering the impact on the health care systems. Understanding and reflecting on the Brazilian and Canadian realities reinforces the need for respecting these diversities when developing and implementing local health policies and interventions. There are some similarities regarding gender, but marked differences in immigration patterns, education and living arrangements. The heterogeneity in the aging process within each country and between them carries different expectations and generates social consequences that manifest themselves in differences in health situations, resulting in new challenges to health services and the formulation of public policies for this age group in both countries.

The aim of this study was to characterize the sociodemographic aspects, health issues and social support offered to the senior users of the Emergency Department of the Hospital de Clinicas in Porto Alegre. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with a random sample of 220 seniors. A structured data form was used to collect data related to the sociodemographic and health characteristics and social support. The majority of subjects were women, married retired, from Porto Alegre, and aged from 60 to 69 years. Almost half reported having poor or very poor health and the prevalent self-reported morbidities were cardiovascular diseases. Differently from other studies with seniors from the community, the majority reported receiving support from family and few provided support. Social support from the formal network was small. Health care must occur in a comprehensive network to provide support to the seniors and their families and to prevent the frequent use of emergency services and to qualify assistance.

This is an integrative review aimed to identify and analyze studies in nursing journals that focus on mental health actions directed to families in different work contexts. To collect data, we used the descriptors mental health, family and nursing in the databases of the Latin American and Caribbean in Health Sciences (LILACS) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). Inclusion criteria were: original articles published in Portuguese, Spanish and English in journals in the field of nursing between the years 2003 to 2008. This work showed a predominance of studies focusing on issues of health staff and/or professional, indicating a need to produce research for users and families. It is believed that these findings may be of great value to the teams in the scenarios of psychosocial care and point the way toward further research.
