This study examined the psychometric properties of the Spence Childrens Anxiety Scale (SCAS) self- and parent-report versions in a community (n=712) and a clinical (n=70) sample of Brazilian children and adolescents. Confirmatory factor analysis conducted in the community sample provided support to the original six correlated factors model of the SCAS. Moreover, the SCAS demonstrated good internal consistency, convergent and divergent validity, and a significant informant effect on the total score with higher anxiety levels in the self-report than in the parent-report version. Considering the clinical sample, we could demonstrate that the SCAS total scores have good discriminant validity differentiating: (a) anxious, community, and negative screening groups; and (b) children diagnosed with different severity levels of anxiety disorders. Our findings suggest that the SCAS (self- and parent-report versions) is suitable for assessing anxiety symptoms in Brazilian children and adolescents in community and clinical settings.

Este artigo investigou caracteristicas educacionais e sociodemograficas em jovens brasileiros trabalhadores e nao-trabalhadores. Participaram do estudo 7425 jovens (45,8% homens), entre 14 e 24 anos (M=16,19; DP= 1,82). O grupo de jovens nao-trabalhadores apresentou indices superiores em relacao as variaveis Serie em que Estuda, Vezes por Semana em Media que Vai para Escola e Percepcao sobre a Escola Atual; e menores indices de Reprovacao com relacao aos jovens trabalhadores. Alem disso, observou-se que os pais dos jovens nao-trabalhadores apresentaram escolaridade superior aos pais de jovens trabalhadores. Constatou-se uma relacao entre dificuldades academicas e trabalho juvenil, bem como a necessidade de os jovens estarem psicologicamente preparados para administrar exigencias laborais e escolares, de maneira a nao prejudicar seu desempenho nessas atividades.

The present chapter approaches emerging adulthood in Brazilians from different socioeconomic levels (SESs) and addresses methodological strategies to reach a noncollege sample. Emerging adulthood is a recent theme in Brazil, and we focus on this theme taking into account socioeconomic inequalities within the Brazilian context, aiming at contributing to the field of emerging adulthood in broader level, since the comparison of emerging adulthood in groups from differing SESs remains scarce in the field. We report Brazilian studies on emerging adulthood and discuss social, educational, and economic factors affecting the transition to adult life. We also propose data collection strategies that provide access to young people of different SESs and educational levels, considering difficulties to reach this public. In addition, we bring the important role of social support and work as sources of emerging adults’ healthy development. Issues of interest to the international community are the study of emerging adulthood in a noncollege sample, strategies to access, and comparisons between low- and high-SES participants.

espanolEste estudio tuvo como objetivo caracterizar adultos emergentes brasilenos en las cinco regiones del pais, considerando variables demograficas, laborales y educacionales; e investigar asociaciones entre factores de proteccion (conexion con la institucion educativa y la familia) y de riesgo (eventos estresores) con autoestima y autoeficacia. Se trata de una investigacion exploratoria descriptiva de caracter transversal. La muestra fue compuesta por 1996 participantes, entre 18 y 29 anos. Fueron encontradas asociaciones positivas entre la conexion con la familia y autoeficacia y autoestima positiva, y negativas con la autoestima negativa. Los eventos estresores se relacionaron negativamente con la autoeficacia y no se relacionaron con la autoestima. Tales resultados indican la influencia de los factores de proteccion y riesgo sobre la autoeficacia y la autoestima de los adultos emergentes en las cinco regiones brasilenas. Se destacan las familias y las instituciones educativas como espacios protectores en la promocion del desarrollo de jovenes en transicion para la vida adulta, particularmente en regiones con problemas mas evidentes de acceso a la educacion y al trabajo. EnglishThis study aimed to characterize Brazilian emerging adults in the five regions of the country, considering demographic, labor and educational variables; investigate associations between protective factors (connection with family and educational institution) and risk (stressful events) with self-esteem and self-efficacy. It is a descriptive exploratory cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 1996 participants aged between 18 and 29 years. There were positive associations between connection with the family and self-efficacy and positive self-esteem, and negative associations with negative self-esteem. The stressful events were negatively associated with self-efficacy and not correlated with self-esteem. These findings indicate the influence of protective factors and risk on the self-efficacy and self-esteem of emerging adults in the five Brazilian regions. Scientifi c journal are a major mean for disseminating scientifi c fi ndings, and play a crucial role in the development and updating of science. However these goals require an effi cient editorial process. The aims of this study were to describe the average time between submission and acceptance of manuscripts in high quality Brazilian journals in Psychology and to investigate associations between the submission/ acceptance time and aspects of the editorial process. We selected 44 journals from the highest strata of the Psychology Qualis CAPES. Published articles available online in the last four numbers of each journal were consulted in regard to the declared time between the dates of submission and acceptance (N = 2,580). The average submission/acceptance time was 235.37 days (SD = 192.95). The higher the number of members in the editorial board, the faster submission/acceptance time. The submission/acceptance time was faster in journals of associations/councils as compared to journals of public and private universities/colleges. Results are discussed emphasizing the impact of a long editorial process in the dissemination of science and the assessment of researchers and scientifi c journals. Suggestions are offered to make the editorial process more effective.
