Effect of plant growth regulators on production and quality of Jubileu peaches This study aimed to evaluate the yield, return of flowering and physico-chemical fruit quality of peaches after using Promalin ® (BA + GA 4+7 ) at different doses and time of application. The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Center of Palma on Pelotas Federal University, Capao do Leao - RS, in 2012. Peach trees of cultivar Jubileu, 13 years old, grafted on Capdeboscq rootstock, at a density of 1.481 plants ha -1 were evaluated. The treatments consisted of: plants without application (control), plants treated with benzyladenine (BA) + gibberellin (GA 4+7 ) at the doses 50 and 100 mg L -1 , applied at 10 and 30 days after full bloom (DAFB) . We evaluated the tree yield, return of flowering and physicochemical quality of fruit. Application of plant growth regulator at 30 DAFB resulted in increase of 6.62 kg per tree and fruits of larger caliber ( > 65 mm), but no significant difference was found between the doses 50 mg L -1 and 100 mg L -1 . Regardless of the doses used in this study, the time of application (30 DAFB) was the main factor for the ef ficiency of the growth regulators in increasing the production per tree, average mass, diameter and pulp firmness of Jubileu peaches . The total number of flowers was reduced with the application of BA + GA 4+7 .

The study aimed to identify the periods with higher risk of frost formation and to evaluate the changes regarding the duration of the phenological cycle of the vine Cabernet Sauvignon, based on the thermal availability of Alegrete, Bage, Quarai, Sao Gabriel, Santana do Livramento and Uruguaiana, located in the Campanha region of Rio Grande do Sul state. The meteorological data such as maximum and minimum air temperature for the period from 1961 to 2010 were used. In order to determine the risk of frost formation, it was considered as favorable condition for the formation when the minimum temperature was less than or equal to 3 °C. To determine the phenological behavior of the cultivar Cabernet Sauvignon the sum of degrees-day, covering the period from August 1 to October 10 as the beginning of the sprouting. It was found that Uruguaiana and Sao Gabriel in early September had low frost formation risk, at 5% level, while in the other municipalities the last date occurs in early October. As for the development subperiod of Cabernet Sauvignon it is possible to observe variations in the total number of days in relation to the sprouting periods, as well as among the municipalities of Campanha.

Clove (Syzygium aromaticum, L.) essential oil is known for its antimicrobial activity against several pathogenic bacteria. Encapsulation of clove oil was proposed as a mean to disguise its strong odor that limits its uses in food industry. Thus, the aim of this study was extraction, encapsulation and assessment of the antimicrobial and antioxidant potential of clove essential oil. The essential oil showed high DPPH scavenging capacity and low hydroxyl radical inhibition. Clove essential oil showed in vitro inhibitory and bactericidal effect against S. aureus, E. coli, L. monocytogenes and S. Typhimurium. In addition, in situ antimicrobial activity of clove oil against S. aureus was superior to nitrite. The essential oil particles encapsulated with sodium alginate and emulsifiers, showed high encapsulation efficiency, low antioxidant activity and strong antimicrobial inhibition. Similar bacterial growth was observed in meat-like products after addition of either particles or nitrite.

Weed interference is a factor that limits the productivity of beans and, among these, hairy beggarticks is one of the main species competing with the crop for environmental resources. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the competitive ability of black bean cultivars (BRS Campeiro, IPR Uirapuru, SCS204 Predileto and BRS Supremo) in the presence of a biotype of hairy beggarticks. The experimental design is a completely randomized block with four replications. Treatments were arranged in a replacement series, consisting of a proportion of the crop and the hairy beggarticks: 100:0; 75:25; 50:50: 24:75, and 0:100, which corresponds to 40:0, 30:10, 20:20, 10:30, and 0:40 plant pots. We accomplished competitive analysis through diagrams applied to the replacement series, as well as using relative competitive indices. The leaf area and shoot dry mass were evaluated at 40 days after emergence of the species. There was competition between bean cultivars and hairy beggarticks for the same environmental resources, causing negative interference in the growth of the species, independent of the proportion of plants. Bean cultivars had a lower relative loss by reducing the morphological variables of the hairy beggarticks, thereby demonstrating superiority in its competitive ability in relation to the weed. Interspecific competition is less damaging than intraspecific competition for both species.
