Brewers spent grain (BSG) could be tested as an alternative source of polyphenols in animal nutrition. Proper extraction and analytical methods are critical for quantification. Thus, extraction for BSG, corn silage, and brans of rice, corn, and wheat were studied for the highest yield of polyphenols. A method for 18 phenolic monomers by HPLC-DAD was developed, validated, and applied to samples. An aqueous solution of NaOH (0.75% w/v) using integral samples for extraction resulted in the highest values for colorimetric measurements in all analyzed sources. Method by maceration showed the highest phenolic yield when applied in corn silage and BSG. However, for brans the best method was microwave assisted. Results from HPLC-DAD analysis clearly showed that native structures of phenolic compounds were simplified to its monomers allowing quantification and sample discrimination. BSG had the highest concentration of polyphenols and could be a promising and innovative source for animal feed studies.

This review aims to conduct a historical analysis of the production chain of sheep in the Rio Grande do Sul, for this purpose we studied the market before the crisis laneira, the late 80s, and the return of productivity after the change in the focus of production. The sheep were introduced in Brazil in the sixteenth century, but only in the twentieth century the activity generated economic development in Rio Grande do Sul, in this period the main product was exploited wool. However, in the late 80s was the beginning of the crisis in the sector laneiro, mainly caused by an increase in inventories of wool from Australia, the marketing of synthetic fabrics and global crises and collapses. Currently identified is the return of the sheep production industry dedicated to meat eating as a result of factors such as the increased purchasing power of the population and adapt to new consumer habits that lead to appreciation for sheep meat. The trends for this market are promising. However, there are some barriers to growth, as the disorder of the sector and the lack of standardization of products. For the state to become major producer of sheep meat is necessary to organize the sector, from production to distribution channels.

The beef is present in the diet of Brazilians and their demand is linked to several factors such as price, quality, preference, flavor, and mainly socioeconomics standards of consumers. The aim of this research was to relate the income as well as characterize other factors that determine and influence the consumption of beef in the population of Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. We applied 797 semi-structured questionnaires by 16 trained interviewers. After the application of the questionnaires, the data were tabulated and analyzed. Among the respondents, 98.37% consume beef. The rib is the main cut chosen by consumers, however, consumers buy effectively topside. The highest percentage of respondents earn of 1-3 minimum wage monthly. The choice of the place that consumers purchase meat products is preferably given by their proximity of residence. Consumers would be willing to pay more for a beef certified by its tenderness. There is a tendency to increase consumption and price paid per kilogram of beef with the increase of the consumers purchasing power. Thus, it is possible to conclude that the purchasing power of the population interferes with the purchase of different cuts of beef consumed.

CITRICULTURA AND COOPERATIVE AGRIBUSINESS IN BRAZIL

Aline Zulian; Andréa Cristina Dörr; Sabrina Cantarelli Almeida

The citrus chain has gained importance in Brazilian agribusiness with market expansion and improvement activity. Brazil is highlighted in orange production and export of fruit juice. Considering that the citrus industry as well as other agricultural activities, involves processing of fruits, this activity requires greater investment and industrialization. Thus, the system of citrus agribusiness encompasses many procedures, and cooperatives and associations are forms of economic organizations that often enable the development of small farmers and provide ways to insert themselves in the competitive market. This study seeks to make a panorama of citrus, with a focus on orange and tangerine, and describe the importance of agribusiness cooperative. Thus, we conclude that the citrus sector has great importance for the Brazilian agribusiness and the presence of a cooperative may be a favorable factor for the growth of small producers.

This study aimed to measure the economic losses caused by the condemnation of swine organs in municipal slaughterhouses under the supervision of the municipal inspection system (MIS) from the city of Santa Maria-RS during 12 months in a row. The study was conducted by collecting data from slaughterhouses in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in MIS. The registered data took into account the number of animals slaughtered, number of condemned organs and major lesions that led to condemnation from October 2010 to September 2011. During the evaluation period, 6,193 animals were slaughtered. It was found that 5,511 organs were condemned, mostly because of aspiration of blood (n = 1,231), larval migration in liver (n = 991), and renal cyst (n = 807). The survey revealed that R

The study investigated the effects of different treatments on seed health of black oat (Avena strigosa SCHREB). Seeds were subjected to the following treatments: witness, Vincit® 50 SC, Trichodel® + Vincit® 50SC, Trichodel®, control without treatment after they were packed in boxes gerbox substrate filter paper moistened with sterile distilled water. BOD remained in chambers at 25 o C, with a photoperiod of 12 hours until the evaluation. The seedborne fungi were identified with the aid of a stereoscopic microscope and optical after seven days of incubation. The statistical design was completely randomized with four treatments and eight replicates of 50 seeds each. The fungus Alternaria spp, Fusarium spp. Botrytis spp. Rhizoctonia spp. Phoma spp. and Trichoderma spp. were identified in Avena strigosa.Os results showed that the chemical (Vincit® 50SC), isolated or associated with Trichodel® was effective for the control of potentially pathogenic fungi for oat seeds.

The fruit sector is one of the most important segments of agribusiness in Brazil. In addition to its high profitability and expressive use of hand labor, the fruit stands out as an important alternative to the increase in Brazilian exports of agricultural products. The new market demands reflect the adoption of certification seals that prove the quality and healthiness of the product, the consumer is assured of a safe food whose production respects the environment and the worker. In Rio Grande do Sul, the culture began to be implemented from the year 2000 when several municipalities in the region received funds from the federal government, especially the Rosary South, through the Program for Fruit of the southern half being a beneficiary of the company Citrusul. This article aims to analyze the characteristics of production and marketing of the company, in addition to identifying the possible benefits of a future adoption of environmental certification programs in the citrus industry in the municipality. This article builds on the literature review and as a way to obtain the information necessary to construct this study, we sought through interviews and case study. The study showed that adoption of certification seals would bring the opportunity to access markets more noble and demanding, since the company is already working to have fruit of excellent quality. However, due to the volume of its current production, it is believed that the high costs for registration need not bring a financial return for such an investment. The fruit sector is one of the most important segments of agribusiness in Brazil.
