OBJECTIVE to study anxiety and spirituality and the relationship between them in university students. METHOD the State-Trait-Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Pinto and Pais-Ribeiro Spirituality Scales were used for data collection. RESULTS six hundred and sixty-nine students participated in the study, of whom 91.5% had moderate and high levels of trait anxiety and 92.9% of state anxiety; 93.8% had high spirituality scores. The multiple linear regression test showed a significant relationship between anxiety and the presence of physical discomfort, unusual body movements, and the need for treatment. Furthermore, higher levels of anxiety were associated with the female gender, the lack of leisure activities, and low levels of optimism in the spirituality scale. CONCLUSION it is important to develop strategies for coping with anxiety, which in turn can be oriented toward protective factors such as spirituality.

Introduction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of auriculotherapy with mustard seeds in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), anxiety, and electromyographic (EMG) activity in university students. Methodology. The State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC) for TMDs (RDC/TMDs), and electromyography were used in this study of 44 college students with high levels of anxiety and TMDs. The subjects were divided into two groups: an auriculotherapy (AA) group (n = 31) and an AA sham group (n = 13). The mustard seeds were applied to the shenmen, rim, sympathetic, brain stem, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) points in the AA group and to sham points in the external ear and wrist in the AA sham group. The treatment protocol was 10 sessions (two treatments per week). Results. Anxiety (p < 0.01) was significantly reduced in the AA group. This group also showed a decrease in tender points in the mandibular posterior region (p = 0.04) and in the right side of the submandibular region (p = 0.02). Complaints of bilateral pain were reduced in the temporal tendon (p ≤ 0.01) and in the left side of the ATM (p < 0.01). In addition, electromyographic (EMG) activity was reduced during temporal muscle contraction (p = 0.03).  Conclusion. Auriculotherapy was effective in the treatment of students with anxiety and TMDs.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the contribution of auriculotherapy in smoking cessation. METHOD Double-blind randomized controlled trial, conducted with 30 smokers allocated into two groups: Experimental Group (21 participants received 10 sessions of auriculotherapy at specific points for smoking) and Control Group (nine participants received auriculotherapy in points that have no effect on the focus of research). RESULTS Auriculotherapy contributed in reducing the number of cigarettes smoked in 61.9% of participants (p=0.002), in reducing the difficult to abstain from smoking in places where it is forbidden by 38% (p=0.050) and in not smoking when ill 23.8% (p=0.025). CONCLUSION Given the efficacy only in terms of reducing the number of cigarettes smoked and other parameters, we suggest that future studies consider the use of auriculotherapy combined with other treatment methods, in order to achieve better results in cessation/abstinence.

Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) is considered an important risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases. The aim of the present study was to verify the effects of a short cardiovascular rehabilitation program (CR) in hypertensive subjects. The clinical pilot study involved a sample composed of 11 hypertensive subjects. It was evaluated the weight, height, body mass index (BMI), waist and hip circumference, waist hip ratio, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and six-minute walk test (6-MWT) before and after CR. CR was performed twice a week for 60 minutes. The results shown that after CR occurred a reduction of waist circumference (99.86±8.7 to 95.2±8.6 cm, p=0.0002) and hip circumference (110.18±14.75 to 105.00±12.7 cm p=0.01) values. About the mean distance walked in the 6-MWT there was an increase after the CR program (335.9±123.5 m to 554.56±87.9 m, p=0.000). In conclusion, the results suggest that a short CR is an effective for the treatment of hypertensive subjects. After 16 CR sessions, functional and musculoskeletal capacity was improved, evaluated by 6-MWT. Furthermore, the short CR program decreased waist and hip circumferences, being an important option for these subjects. Although. There were no changes in baseline blood pressure levels. Strokes can generate significant motor, tonic and sensitive changes. Virtual reality (RV), focused on rehabilitation, can bring several benefits such as improvements on physical fitness, motor skills and balance. Objective: To assess the effects of the RV intervention to the static and dynamic balance, weight load on the affected limb, tone and muscle recruitment, functional independence and sensorimotor function in post-stroke individuals. Methods: Quasi-experimental and prospective clinical study with 6 subjects with diagnosis of stroke. Before and after the intervention with Nintendo Wii Fit Plus, the subjects were assessed by the Berg Balance Scale, Timed “Up and Go” and Dynamic Floor Index; Gait Test (GT); Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS); Electromyography; Barthel Index and Fugl-Meyer Scale (FMS). The Statistical analysis used Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, t test and Wilcoxon. Results: The 1st and 15th session evaluations have shown that GT (p = 0.03, d = 1.96, P = 96%), MAS for hip extensor muscles (p = 0.04; d = 3.77; P = 99%), knee extensors (p = 0.04; d = 3.23; P = 99%), plantar flexors (p = 0.01; d = 3.18; P = 99%), FMS in coordination/velocity dimensions (p = 0.02; d = 6.74; P = 100%) and sensitivity (p = 0.01) presented significant results, large effect size and power above 90%. Significant values were not found to the other evaluations. Conclusion: The RV rehabilitation program was effective and improved the weight-load in affected limb, muscle tone and sensorimotor function of the subjects

[Purpose] To compare the effects of two physiotherapy protocols for chronic kidney disease patients on dialysis. [Subjects and Methods] This is a prospective, randomized study, in chronic kidney disease patients 18 years of age or older on dialysis. Sessions for each group (were conducted three times per week for a total of 10 sessions), during hemodialysis. Respiratory muscle strength (maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressure), peak expiratory flow, and peripheral muscle strength were evaluated. The study group received motor and respiratory physiotherapy, and the control group received motor physiotherapy alone. [Results] We observed a significant increase in the maximal inspiratory pressure in the study group in the 5th and 10th sessions and in the maximal expiratory pressure in the 1st session, peak flow in the 1st and 10th sessions, and dynamometry in the 10th session. In the control group, there was a significant decrease in maximal inspiratory pressure in the 5th and 10th sessions, and in maximal expiratory pressure in the 10th session, peak flow in the 5th and 10th sessions, and dynamometry in the 5th session. [Conclusion] Implementation of motor physiotherapy combined with respiratory physiotherapy may have contributed to the improvement of the variables analyzed in the study group.

[Purpose] The purpose of present study was associate the increase of respiratory muscle strength with blood pressure levels in hypertensive subjects who underwent an aerobic exercise program. [Subjects and Methods] 90 hypertensive subjects were divided in two groups: intervention and control. All participants had an interview with a physiotherapist and were evaluated by 6-minute walk test, maximal inspiratory pressure, maximal expiratory pressure, heart rate, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure, before and after the 8 weeks. In the intervention group, the subjects underwent aerobic exercise program, 2 times a week for 8 weeks [Results] After the program, the levels of blood pressure were significantly reduced and the distance walked in the 6-minute walk test and the respiratory muscle strength were increased, compared to pre intervention and control group values. However, there was no correlation between the results provided by 6-minute walk test, maximal inspiratory pressure and maximal expiratory pressure with systolic arterial blood pressure levels. Nonetheless, the distance walked correlated with respiratory muscle strength values, in the intervention group. [Conclusion] The present study demonstrated that the aerobic training was effective in reducing the arterial blood pressure in hypertensive subjects associated with an improvement of physical conditioning and respiratory muscle strength.
