Throughout the years, the human organism goes through natural aging, having functional and structural changes. The part responsible for the corporal balance system also suffers from the aging process, creating great impact for the elderly. AIM: Thus, the present paper aims at studying the vestibular function of old people suffering from dizziness, tinnitus and hearing impairment. STUDY DESIGN: transversal cohort. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Eighty elderly individuals from two different groups were evaluated: group A - comprising 38 women and 2 men who belonged to an elderly group from Santa Maria, RS; and group B - comprising 35 women and 5 men with complaints of balance disorders. RESULTS: Both groups underwent anamnesis (directed to aspects concerning dizziness, tinnitus and hearing impairment), and vestibular function evaluation (by using the computerized system of vecto-electronystagmography SCV 5.0). The results showed statistical significant difference between both groups, concerning the complaints of dizziness and tinnitus, which were more prevalent in group B. The computerized eletronystagmography revealed that most individuals had normal diagnosis; however, there was predominance of vestibular disorders in the elderly, such as Deficit Peripheral Vestibular Syndrome and Irritative Peripheral Vestibular Syndrome. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that vestibular disorders, according to vecto-electronystagmography, and complaints of dizziness, tinnitus and hearing impairment, were numerically similar in both studied groups.

UNLABELLED Hormonal dysfunctions in women during pregnancy can cause vestibular and/or cochlear disorders. AIM to study hearing and vestibular complaints in pregnant women. MATERIAL AND METHOD this is a prospective study. 82 pregnant women participated on this study. For hearing and vestibular complaints, a questionnaire proposed by Castagno (1994) was employed. RESULTS we could observe that tinnitus was the main auditory complaint (33%), although with no differences between the groups. Tinnitus was present among 52.44% of the pregnant women, mainly in the Group 2. According to symptoms related to dizziness, vertigo was the main auditory complaint in first trimester, whereas instability and gait unbalance were more frequent in the second trimester, and instability and tendency to fall in the third trimester. Nausea was the main symptom associated with dizziness in pregnant women, being more frequent in the first trimester of gestation. CONCLUSIONS women during gestation have auditory and vestibular complaints, mainly dizziness and tinnitus.

INTRODUCTION: The Parkinson disease can be between the multiple alterations cause in the physical balance. OBJECTIVE: In this way the study has for objective to evaluate the patients with Parkinsons physical balance. METHOD: Prospective studies from which 12 indiviuals with Parkinson were evaluated through tests of static and dynamic balance, dynamic posturography and vectoelectronystagmography. To compare the dynamic posturographys results was used a group of gauged control. RESULTS: Were found alterations in Romberg-Barre, Utemberg and Marcha tests. The vestibular exam detected 06 normal cases, 04 central vestibular syndrome and 02 cases of peripheral vestibular syndrome. In the dynamic posturography, detected balance alteration when compared to the controlled group in all Sensorial Organization Tests, in media and the usage of vestibular system. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with Parkinson present physical balance alteration. The dynamic posutrography was more sensitive to detect the balance alterations then vectoelectronystgmography.

PURPOSE: to evaluate the auditory processing of military personnel exposed to occupational noise. METHODS: 41 servicemen, exposed to noise for at least 10 years were evaluated, divided into Group A (n= 16), without hearing loss and Group B (n= 25), with hearing loss. The following evaluations were carried through: basic audilogic evaluation and auditory processing tests (low-filtered, SSW and Pitch Pattern Sequence tests). RESULTS: there were high incidences of auditory processing alterations, especially at low-filtered test (43.75% and 68% on groups A e B, respectively) and Pitch Pattern Sequence test (68.75% and 48%, on groups A e B, respectively). The SSW test was not efficient to evaluate the central hearing abilities of people exposed to high levels of sound pressure. CONCLUSION: the occupational noise exposure interferes in the auditory processing of military personnel. The alterations on central auditory pathways can be verified even if there is no any alteration on peripheral hearing.

With the aging some skills are compromised, such as areas that process the signs of the vestibular, vision and proprioceptive systems. This study aimed to to evaluate the body balance of elderly women during manipulation of sensorial systems. The study included 39 elderly women who practice hydro-gymnastics. Na AMTI force platform was used to evaluate the variables related to body balance in the antero-posterior and medium-lateral sense. The sensory conflict was accomplished through six sensorial organization tests (SOT) through the dynamic posturography validated by Castagno (1994). Results showed that in theantero-posterior direction there was no statistically significant differences only in the comparisons of SOT 2 with SOT 1, SOT 3 and SOT 4; in SOT 3 with SOT 4; and in SOT 5 with SOT 6. With respect to the medium-lateral direction there were no statistically significant differences just in the comparison of SOT 1 with SOT 2 and 3; in SOT 2 with SOT 3; and in SOT 5 with SOT 4 and 6. During TOS, six elderly showed higher average amplitude of COP displacement width in both directions, indicating greater instability in the manipulation of proprioceptive and vestibular inputs. We concluded that the more sensory systems are manipulated or suppressed, the worse will be the elderlys body balance.
