With the aging some skills are compromised, such as areas that process the signs of the vestibular, vision and proprioceptive systems. This study aimed to to evaluate the body balance of elderly women during manipulation of sensorial systems. The study included 39 elderly women who practice hydro-gymnastics. Na AMTI force platform was used to evaluate the variables related to body balance in the antero-posterior and medium-lateral sense. The sensory conflict was accomplished through six sensorial organization tests (SOT) through the dynamic posturography validated by Castagno (1994). Results showed that in theantero-posterior direction there was no statistically significant differences only in the comparisons of SOT 2 with SOT 1, SOT 3 and SOT 4; in SOT 3 with SOT 4; and in SOT 5 with SOT 6. With respect to the medium-lateral direction there were no statistically significant differences just in the comparison of SOT 1 with SOT 2 and 3; in SOT 2 with SOT 3; and in SOT 5 with SOT 4 and 6. During TOS, six elderly showed higher average amplitude of COP displacement width in both directions, indicating greater instability in the manipulation of proprioceptive and vestibular inputs. We concluded that the more sensory systems are manipulated or suppressed, the worse will be the elderlys body balance.

BACKGROUND: postural control of mouth breathing school aged children. AIM: to compare the posture and body balance of school aged children groups, with and without oral breathing considering the variable gender. METHOD: the study was developed at a municipal school in the city of Santa Maria (Brazil) and received prior approval of the ethics committee of the University of Santa Maria. The study group (with oral breathing) and the control group (without oral breathing) were selected based on an anamnesis, age (between 8 and 12 years), assessment of the stomatognathic system and auditory evaluation. The final sample was composed by 51 children in the study group (20 female and 31 male) and 58 in the control group (34 female and 24 male). Both groups were submitted to a dynamic posturography (sensory organization test - SOT) and to a postural assessment in right and left lateral view. RESULTS: regarding the female gender, a statistically significant difference was observed for the angle that evaluates head horizontal alignment; for the SOT III value and for all SOT mean values. As for the male gender, a significant numerical difference was observed for the knee angle, for the ankle angle, for the SOT III value, for the SOT IV value and for all SOT mean values. CONCLUSION: school aged children with oral breathing present postural alterations; females present head positing alterations and males present alterations in the position of the inferior limbs. The body balance of school aged children with oral breathing, of both genders, demonstrated to be altered when compared to children without oral breathing, especially in the presence of sensorial conflict.

PURPOSE: to evaluate the relation between gender and level of development of responsible systems for postural balance in children between six and ten years old. METHOD: it was composed of 282 children, divided into three groups: general (girls and boys), female (146 children) and male 136 male (children aged between six and ten years old). For the evaluation of postural balance it was used the dynamic posturography assesses laser-foam sensory systems through six different tests. Data were submitted to descriptive statistics and tests according to the normality of the data. RESULTS: in the Sensory Organization Test, it can be observed that the findings for girls were higher than the values found for boys in the variables Sensory Organization Test I and their average. However, these values for the groups of boys and girls were below the reference values of the Foam-Laser Posturography for adults. When it was done the comparison between genders within each age group it was found statistically significant differences in the Sensory Organization Test I for eight year-old, the Sensory Organization Test V for nine year-old and the Sensory Organization Test and Average VI Sensory Organization Test for eight year-old. CONCLUSION: although postural balance was better for girls than boys, both groups had lower values than those considered normal in adults indicating that the systems responsible for postural balance are not mature.

Abstract Acute bouts of high-intensity intermittent exercise (HIIE) or sports are associated with changes in lymphocytes and platelet functions and we hypothesized that the purinergic system is involved with these alterations. We investigated the activity of ectonucleotidases in platelets and lymphocytes as well as the platelet aggregation of futsal players in response to an acute protocol of HIIE. Thus, 19 male semi-professional futsal players were submitted to 40 min of HIIE on a treadmill. Blood samples were collected three-time points: before exercise, immediately after, and 30 min after the end of the session. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and lymphocytes were isolated. ATP, ADP, AMP, and adenosine hydrolysis, NTPDase1 (CD39) expression as well as platelet aggregation were measured. Our results showed HIIE induced a decrease in ATP and ADP hydrolysis in platelets, an increase in adenosine hydrolysis and an increase in platelet aggregation immediately after exercise. After 30 min of recovery, enzymatic activity and platelet aggregation returned to baseline levels. In lymphocytes, adenosine hydrolysis was augmented immediately after exercise and remained increased even after 30 min of recovery. In conclusion, acute HIIE triggers a transient proaggregant status that is reverted after a 30 min of recovery. The effects of HIIE in lymphocytes remained after 30 min of recovery, indicating a pro-inflammatory response. This work elucidated some of the mechanisms by which purinergic system regulates lymphocytes and platelets activities related to HIIE, suggesting that the type of exercise may influence an increase in platelet aggregation even in trained individuals.

Human aging modifies the parameters of gait and postural ba lance leading to losses as falls, injuries and loss of independence. In the case of postural balance, physical abilities as lower limb strength, coordination and agility are inextricably linked with postural control, as well as anthropometric variables (weight and height) and age. In this regard, various physical methods have been suggested for prevention and also in the improvement of pathological conditions. Among these activities, the highlights are exercise programs performed in the aquatic environment. Thus, this study aimed to conduct a review of scientific studies about the aquatic physical activities for the elderly and the effects of these activities on postural control. The results showed that compared with the exercises on land, the aquatic exercises present eviden
