With the aging some skills are compromised, such as areas that process the signs of the vestibular, vision and proprioceptive systems. This study aimed to to evaluate the body balance of elderly women during manipulation of sensorial systems. The study included 39 elderly women who practice hydro-gymnastics. Na AMTI force platform was used to evaluate the variables related to body balance in the antero-posterior and medium-lateral sense. The sensory conflict was accomplished through six sensorial organization tests (SOT) through the dynamic posturography validated by Castagno (1994). Results showed that in theantero-posterior direction there was no statistically significant differences only in the comparisons of SOT 2 with SOT 1, SOT 3 and SOT 4; in SOT 3 with SOT 4; and in SOT 5 with SOT 6. With respect to the medium-lateral direction there were no statistically significant differences just in the comparison of SOT 1 with SOT 2 and 3; in SOT 2 with SOT 3; and in SOT 5 with SOT 4 and 6. During TOS, six elderly showed higher average amplitude of COP displacement width in both directions, indicating greater instability in the manipulation of proprioceptive and vestibular inputs. We concluded that the more sensory systems are manipulated or suppressed, the worse will be the elderlys body balance.

PURPOSE: to evaluate the relation between gender and level of development of responsible systems for postural balance in children between six and ten years old. METHOD: it was composed of 282 children, divided into three groups: general (girls and boys), female (146 children) and male 136 male (children aged between six and ten years old). For the evaluation of postural balance it was used the dynamic posturography assesses laser-foam sensory systems through six different tests. Data were submitted to descriptive statistics and tests according to the normality of the data. RESULTS: in the Sensory Organization Test, it can be observed that the findings for girls were higher than the values found for boys in the variables Sensory Organization Test I and their average. However, these values for the groups of boys and girls were below the reference values of the Foam-Laser Posturography for adults. When it was done the comparison between genders within each age group it was found statistically significant differences in the Sensory Organization Test I for eight year-old, the Sensory Organization Test V for nine year-old and the Sensory Organization Test and Average VI Sensory Organization Test for eight year-old. CONCLUSION: although postural balance was better for girls than boys, both groups had lower values than those considered normal in adults indicating that the systems responsible for postural balance are not mature.

The purpose of this work was to standardize and test the use of the force platform in ortostatic pattern in dogs, to approach the support assessment and weight distribution in the limbs, allowing the visualization of the transfer possibility in surgical orthopedics patients with hip diseases. Clinical evaluation - lameness degrees and radiografic exam - and biomechanical evaluation were accomplished through the force plate for static collection of 16 surgical orthopedics patients with hip diseases in hospital routine (control-group) and 6 healthy dogs without a report of orthopedics problems (treatment-group). The control-group for outline allowed an appropriate methodology at static collection in dogs. The platform in ortostatic pattern was efficient and a more sensitive and objective parameter than the others, being of appropriate use in the evaluation of an orthopedic patient.

The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between variables of the center of pressure during upright position with the standing long jump test and the lateral jump sideways test in children from 4-10 years of age. The study included 153 children in this age group. The motor tests were standing long jump (JOHNSON e NELSON, 1979) and the lateral jump sideways test KTKs battery (Korper Koordinationstest fur Kinder) of Kiphard e Schilling (1974). Stabilometry was performed with a AMTI force plate AccuSway Plus (Advanced Mechanical Technologies, Inc). Data normality was verified and confirmed by the Shapiro-Wilk test. For data analysis, it was used the Pearson correlation coefficient. According to the results, the strength of lower limbs, the agility and coordination, evaluated by motor tests, improved with increasing chronological age. The same trend occurred with the values of postural balance. The postural balance variables had significant correlation with the results of motor tests, which were in mostly moderate. Correlations were stronger in the lateral jump sideway test than the standing long jump test. Age was stronger correlated with the variables of balance than height and weight. The IMC has only significant correlation with the medium speed variable of COP, but this correlation was weak.

Luiz Fernando Cuozzo Lemos; Ariel Dal Forno Mastella; Gabriel Ivan Pranke; Carlos Bolli Mota

Human aging modifies the parameters of gait and postural ba lance leading to losses as falls, injuries and loss of independence. In the case of postural balance, physical abilities as lower limb strength, coordination and agility are inextricably linked with postural control, as well as anthropometric variables (weight and height) and age. In this regard, various physical methods have been suggested for prevention and also in the improvement of pathological conditions. Among these activities, the highlights are exercise programs performed in the aquatic environment. Thus, this study aimed to conduct a review of scientific studies about the aquatic physical activities for the elderly and the effects of these activities on postural control. The results showed that compared with the exercises on land, the aquatic exercises present eviden
