The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the carcass and meat characteristics of Hereford (H), 5/8 H 3/8 Nellore (N), 1/2 H 1/2 N and 1/4 H 3/4 N steers, feedlot finished, from 20 to 24 months of age. Twenty-four steers randomly taken from the same herd were used. The diet contained, in a dry matter basis, 12.7% of crude protein and 57.5:42.5% forage:concentrate ratio. The forage was composed by corn silage + sugar cane (relation 1:1). The slaughter and cold carcass weights were higher for 1/2 H 1/2 N steers (443 and 236 kg) followed by 5/8 H 3/8 N (426 and 225 kg). The cold carcass dressing percentage increased as the proportion of N increased, being 48.91, 52.74, 53.37 and 54.23%, respectively. There was no difference for subcutaneous fat thickness, bone, muscle and fat percentage in the carcass. The meat tenderness decreased with the increase of Nellore proportion in the genotype.

The objective of this work was to evaluate diets fed from 21 to 63 days of age on piglets performance. Ninety-six piglets three crossbrad were fed with two types of diets: simple and complex. A completely randomized design with two treatments and twelwe replicates per treatment was used. The daily feed intake (DFI), the daily weight gain (DWG), the feed:gain ratio (F:G) and the weights were evaluated in the period. The piglets fed with complex diets had higher DFI and DWG in the post lactation. In the period (nursery phase), there was no diet type effect on weight and the F:G.

Two experiments were carried out to study the effects of grinding of soybean hulls (SH) on starting pigs (15-30 kg) diets. Experiment I consisted of a digestibility trial with 12 barrows, initial average body weight 21.9±1.29 kg, in which the best digestibility coefficient (DC) of DM and GE was obtained with SH ground through a 2.5mm screen mesh, evaluated for CP and ME, a best DC was attained with 3.0 mm screen mesh. In the Experiment II, five diets with increasing SH (2.5 mm) levels (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 %) for starting piglets were formulated. A quadratic response in daily weight gain (DWG) occurred, according to SH inclusion. Worst DWG occurred at 7.75 % SH inclusion. Daily feed intake, feed: gain ratio and plasma urea nitrogen were not affected by inclusion levels. In conclusion, although soybean hull grinding improves the digestible nutrients, inclusion of SH on starting pig diets is economically unfeasible.

In Brazil, the slaughter of boar is prohibited, however this category presents economic advantages when compared with the barrows. Some experiments have demonstrated that differences exist in the nutritional requirement among these categories. The present experiment was carried out at the Federal Universty of Santa Maria, where 96 animals were evaluated concerning performance when fed with diets containig 100, 90, 80 and 70% of the maximum levels recommended for lysine, threonine, methionine + cystine and tryptophan (1.25, 0.81, 0.75 and 0.22%, respectively) until they reached an average weight of 70kg. No significant differences (P > 0.05) were observed for food intake, daily gain and feed conversion efficiency during the whole period, being the levels of 0.87% lysine, 0.57% threonine, 0.52% methonime + cystine and 0.16% tryptophan enough to provide good performance, and showed to be more economic between tested levels.
