As Halal is the greatest concert to all Muslims, several measures have been taken by the authorities to educate Muslims about Halal status on food products. Introducing Halal logo is one of the significant approaches. Challenges faced by manufacturers in promoting their products to Muslims consumers made process of securing Halal logo harder. Fake Halal logos are produced massively which then leads to confusion to the consumers. This study is focused on validating Halal status for food products by using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to enhance existing methods in Malaysia. A preliminary survey was performed to valuate the industrys readiness ti implement RFID technology in Malaysia. A process model and prototype were developed to enhance existing systems. With this method, the authentic Halal logo that is issued by JAKIM can easily be validated, because every stamp that will be embedded into food packages is identified with its own unique identification number. An RFID reader will be placed at retail stores for consumers to validate products status. User evaluation has been conducted to measure satisfaction in term of usability, efficiency, security, affordability and profitability. Based on the evaluation, all respondents are satisfied with the performance of this new technology and fully support implementing this system globally, as the Malaysian government is now moving towards becoming the worlds Halal hub.

Purpose The explosion of social media use such as Facebook among higher education students is deemed to have great potential in widely disseminating environmental sustainability awareness. The paper aims to capture, summarise, synthesise and comment on the role of social media to garner interest of students and staff on environmental sustainability issues. Design/methodology/approach Systematic literature review technique is adopted, and three selected online databases were searched for relevant papers for review. Specific data were extracted from each paper, and the discussion section was based on the developed research questions. Findings Higher education needs to fully leverage the ubiquity of social media to extend how environmental sustainability is viewed by the students and staff. Sustainability practices conducted at the university level such as recycling, reduction of electricity and water consumptions and paper reduction in classroom and used to engage students on environmental matters. For staff, social media can be leveraged as to convey the university policy and assist in their quest to become full-fledged green universities. Research limitations/implications Some of the limitations of this research include the lack of keyword search using synonyms or related terms equivalent to the term “awareness”, lack of forward and backward searches, and the papers were searched until end of 2013 only. Future research needs to take advantage of the current limitations to investigate this topic and be empirically supported by theories using quantitative, qualitative or mixed-method-based research. Future studies could also develop relevant frameworks to propose an effective use of social media for creating environmental sustainability awareness in higher education. Practical implications Propagations of environmental sustainability awareness in higher education would be more effective with the use of social media. Social implications In principle, the increase of environmental awareness level would increase the students’ good behavioural conduct on environmental sustainability. Originality/value While the broad topic of environmental sustainability in higher education is widely discussed, the role of social media in shaping environmental sustainability awareness is still under researched. This situation provides a significant potential for exploration by sustainability researchers to craft their investigation on the effective role of social media in creating environmental awareness in higher education.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the information-seeking behaviour of international students in terms of their information needs and to highlight the role of social media.,In this paper, a systematic literature survey was conducted in order to investigate information-seeking trends among international students while using social media. As a result, an exhaustive systematic literature review (SLR) was carried out in order to investigate social media as a source for the observation of the behaviours of international students. For this purpose, 71 articles were selected from various well-known sources after an intensive SLR process of searching, filtering and enforcing the inclusion and exclusion criteria.,As an outcome of this study, the information-seeking behaviour of international students was highlighted with respect to social media as a source of information. In addition, this research identifies the information needs of the international students and categorizes them by the roles played by the social media in fulfilling the information needs.,A comparative study that highlighted the dearth of studies which merge the social media and information-seeking behaviour of international students as well as identify the future direction for the researchers and for benefits of international students.,A detail SLR which highlights the need of shifting the information seeking behaviour from libraries to social media in regard to the new environment for international students.

Information systems security practices in social software applications: A systematic literature review

Suraya Ika Tamrin; Azah Anir Norman; Suraya Hamid

Purpose The purpose of this paper to investigate the current information systems security (ISS) practices of the social software application (SSA) users via the internet. Design/methodology/approach The paper opted for a systematic literature review survey on ISS and its practices in SSAs between 2010 and 2015. The study includes a set of 39 papers from among 1,990 retrieved papers published in 35 high-impact journals. The selected papers were filtered using the Publish or Perish software by Harzing and Journal Citation Report (JCR) with an inclusion criterion of least one citation per article. Findings The practice of ISS is driven by the need to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the data from being tampered. It is coherent with the current practice as reported by many researchers in this study. Four important factors lead to the ISS practice in SSA: protection tools offered, ownership, user behaviour, and security policy. Practical implications The paper highlights the implication of successful ISS practices is having clear security purpose and security supported environment (user behaviour and security protection tools) and governance (security policy and ownership) protection tools offered, ownership, user behaviour, and security policy towards ISS practice by the users. Originality/value This paper fulfils an identified need to study how to enable ISS practice.

An analysis of Information Systems Security Management (ISSM): The hierarchical organizations vs. emergent organization

Azah Anir Norman; Norizan Mohd Yasin

The adoption of Information Systems (IS) in many businesses is at a fast tempo in order to be more competitive. This fast adoption is very much supported by the rapid technology advancement and the increasing demand from business stakeholders. Together with the introduction of the Internet with its remarkable features, plus the free-form of policing practiced make the Internet more attractive and engaging. The only problem is this attraction has become the magnet for the abuser to misuse the Internet for their profit. This problem has led to many Information Security study to combat threats and protect the business. However, many studies are focus on the technical and engineering solution, where less work were conducted in the IS, management and business issues. In the context of ecommerce, there are very few studies done to understand the problem faced by this subject. Only few e-commerce company manage IS security as the rest believe it is not important. This preliminary paper is written to study the IS security management on the emergent organization environment (e.g. ecommerce) as to the hierarchical organization is dominant in this research field. A framework of analysis is derived to show the contrast of the research objective above.
