The Drone Sector in Europe

Blanca de Miguel Molina; Marival Segarra Oña

The aim of this chapter is to review the industry sector in Europe, which involves big companies as well as SMEs. The leading European countries, the main competitors, and the main competitive advantages of the industry are analysed. We have identified five different segments in which companies compete based on distinctive features (toys, hobby/leisure, professional, commercial, and military). The homogenization of the industry, especially in the toy, hobby, and commercial subsectors, is mainly led by big companies, which at the same time also represent the largest market share. We have concluded that there are no entry barriers besides technology and commercial distribution, but the main difficulty that is hampering the industry’s expansion is regulation. This affects in particular the hobby/leisure and commercial drone segments, some areas more than others; while agricultural and military drones are expanding and evolving rapidly, professional filming and photography and toys are still too dependent on safety or legal issues, such as privacy concerns. It is also remarkable that companies from China and the USA are reaching the top positions. This should be taken into consideration by European policy makers, as the decisions made in the next years will be the key to the development of the sector in Europe.

Moreover, current European regulations on drone flights apply to outdoor drones but not always to their indoor counterparts. However, several industrial sectors have started to use drones for indoor tasks such as surveillance, architecture, emergencies, and communication media. A qualitative study has been conducted in order to explore the concerns expressed by civil drone operators over the measures that manufacturers include in their products and information packages. Codes of conduct could also help these parties when there is no legal regulation that can be applied. We used content analysis as the method of analysis for three different sources: secondary data from a literature review and from public European documents, and primary data from focus groups. Results show that safety and security/privacy by design are seen as the best ethical measures, whilst codes of conduct could be used as complimentary information for professional users.

Intangible Heritage and Gastronomy: The Impact of UNESCO Gastronomy Elements

María de Miguel Molina; Blanca de Miguel Molina; Virginia Santamarina Campos; María del Val Segarra Oña

The objective of this study is two-fold: on the one hand, to determine whether literature has studied the relationship between intangible heritage and gastronomy; on the other, we have explored the use of UNESCO-recognized elements for marketing purposes. Two research questions have been addressed: (a) Is there a specific definition of gastronomy as intangible heritage? and (b) can the UNESCO-recognized elements be used for marketing purposes? We have used a method that combines content analysis and network analysis via the identification and study of keywords. The results showed a definition of gastronomy as intangible world heritage would be required. We have also observed that the use of the UNESCO-recognized elements, for marketing purposes, could be an opportunity for differentiating place’s identity.ABSTRACT The objective of this study is two-fold: on the one hand, to determine whether literature has studied the relationship between intangible heritage and gastronomy; on the other, we have explored the use of UNESCO-recognized elements for marketing purposes.
