Human dignity violated: a negative approach - Introduction

The concept of human dignity is one of the few philosophical notions that has gained popular currency beyond specialist academic discourse. From the writings of Pico della Mirandola, Immanuel Kant and other philosophers it has found its way into our colloquial vocabulary. Appeals to human dignity are an important part of ethical, legal and political discourse nowadays and appear frequently in national constitutions and UN documents, in newspapers, NGO publications and in human rights discourse. But what is it that motivates all this talk about human dignity?

Bei dem Argument der schiefen Ebene (slipperyslope-argument; Dammbruchargument) handelt es sich um einen im Alltag und in wissenschaftlichen Diskursen weit verbreiteten Argumentationstyp. Ein Argument der schiefen Ebene kommt meist dann zum Tragen, wenn gegen eine Handlung bzw. Praxis unmittelbar keine moralischen Grunde sprechen. Gegen die Handlung wird dann angefuhrt, dass sie zu einer Ereignisfolge fuhre, an deren Ende ein von allen Diskutierenden als moralisch unerwunscht angesehener Zustand steht. Typisch ist ein gradualistischer Ubergang von einem eher unproblematischen Anfang zu einem prognostizierten schrecklichen Ende, das mit diesem Anfang in Zusammenhang gebracht wird. Wer etwa behauptet, die Abschaffung des Latinums als Studienvoraussetzung sei fur sich genommen akzeptabel, fuhre jedoch mittelfristig zu schlechteren Grammatikkenntnissen und langfristig zur Abschaffung erst samtlicher Sprachvoraussetzungen und dann jeglicher Bildung, bringt eine typische Variante des Arguments der schiefen Ebene vor.

Würde, Selbstachtung und persönliche Identität

Abstract Human dignity is a contested and maybe essentially contested concept. One prominent interpretation links dignity with self-respect, claiming that a violation of dignity is a form of disrespect that erodes the grounds of self-respect. However, this linkage of dignity and self-respect does not immediately solve the difficulty of understanding dignity. Self-respect might turn out to be a similarly contested concept, but it might also be more open to analytical scrutiny than dignity is. Following this possibility, I discuss three different contemporary theories that link dignity with self-respect in different ways, which were developed by Peter Schaber, Arnd Pollmann and Ralf Stoecker respectively. I will then argue that those theories present illuminating interpretations of respect, but somewhat neglect a thorough discussion of the self that is to be respected. However, such a discussion of the self or - to express it in a rather less metaphysical way - identity is necessary, or so I will argue, for a full understating of the relation of dignity and self-respect.
