ZusammenfassungDer Beitrag verfolgt zwei Ziele: (a) Die vielfältigen Spuren, die die Emerson-Lektüre im Werk Musils, vor allem im Mann ohne Eigenschaften hinterlassen hat, werden erstmals umfassend interpretiert, (b) Die Sprach- und Lebensphilosophie Emersons und Musils wird als systematischer Beitrag zur Theorie der Moderne rekonstruiert. Hauptthemen sind die „dynamische Moral“ und der „Essayismus“, die Verschränkung von Leben und Sprache sowie der Status der Liebe.AbstractThis paper focuses on two points: (a) It scrutinizes Emerson’s marked influence on Musil; new findings reveal Emerson’s hidden presence in The Man Without Qualities. (b) Emerson’s and Musil’s philosophies of life and of language are reconstructed as systematic contributions to the theory of modernity. Main topics are „dynamic morality“ and „essayism,“ the intertwinement of life and language, and the status of love.

Seeing It All, Doing It All, Saying It All: Transparency, Subject, and the World

This chapter situates the debate on transparency in a larger context by comparing three epistemological or practical attitudes of the subject towards the world: the ability of “seeing it all” linked to the ideal of transparency, the courage of “saying it all” epitomized in “parrhesia” or free speech, and the power of “doing it all” labeled as “panourgia” in Greek. By analyzing a vast array of sources reaching from Sophocles and Euripides to Descartes, Diderot, and Bentham, Thoma identifies the sharp differences between those three attitudes. They represent competing ways of reading the subject and its outreach to the world. These findings are instrumental for addressing the recent success story of transparency and its discontents.

Aufbruch an den Rand der Philosophie

Abstract The recently discovered first draft of Heidegger’s What Is Metaphysics?, his Inaugural Lecture in Freiburg from 1929, is published here for the first time. It differs from the version known so far in numerous, philosophically relevant details. The first draft is marked by a fierce attack on “science,” a dramatic invocation of “nothingness,” and a sharp critique of the current state of philosophy or of philosophy as such. An editorial note addresses philological issues concerning the status of this text and its authenticity. An extended commentary situates it within Heidegger’s writings of the period and discusses its preparatory role with regard to his National-Socialist turn. As What Is Metaphysics? – together with Carnap’s response in “Overcoming Metaphysics Through Logical Analysis of Language” – serves as a reference point for the great divide between so-called analytic and so-called continental philosophy, this original version is an opportunity to reassess its premises and limits.

The Danger of Being Ridden by a Type: Everydayness and Authenticity in Context – Reading Heidegger with Hegel and Diderot

The critical analysis of habit is regularly complemented by scenarios of how to defy it. Heidegger’s conceptual pairing for taking on this twofold task is “everydayness” and “authenticity.” In this paper, his account is put to test. By choosing an unusual line-up of authors – Heidegger, Hegel, and Diderot –, it identifies three different strategies for overcoming the danger of being ridden by a type. They appeal to authenticity, universality, or individuality. After discussing Hegel’s and Diderot’s accounts, the paper turns to Heidegger’s confrontation between everydayness and authenticity and shows that it remains inconclusive. In order to create a bulwark against habit Heidegger establishes a link between authenticity and the anticipation of death which makes Dasein turn away from the “multiplicity of possibilities” and secures the “simplicity” of resoluteness. This total demolition of particularities and differences paves the way to a totalitarian conception of overcoming customs: The individual is prone to affirm a destiny marked by total homogeneity and equalization. The paper comes to the conclusion that, among the different readings of habit and its discontents, Diderot’s account is the most plausible.

Glück in der Liebe. Die Bereitschaft zur Hingabe

»Wem gefiele nicht eine Philosophie«, so fragte Novalis um 1800, »deren Keim ein erster Kus ist?« (1965, 541). Wenn ein Kuss der Keim der Philosophie sein kann, so ist damit die Frage noch nicht beantwortet, auf welche Weise sie den Kuss oder die Liebe zu ihrem Gegenstand machen kann. Zweifellos gehort die Liebe zu den Erfahrungen im Leben, die man durchlebt, ohne zu wissen, wovon genau man gebeutelt wird. Sie versetzt uns ofter mal ins Staunen — in das Staunen, mit dem die Philosophie als Liebe zur Weisheit bekanntlich beginnt. Entsprechend konnte sie in der Liebe ihr ureigenes Thema erkennen.

Glück, Revolution und revolutionäres Denken im 18. Jahrhundert. Philosophisch-politische Diskurse in den USA und in Frankreich

Zu den merkwurdigen Koinzidenzen der Philosophie und Politik des 18. Jahrhunderts gehoren die Anrufungen des Glucks, die sich bei Thomas Jefferson und Saint-Just finden. 1776 bezeichnete Jefferson in seinem Entwurf zur Unabhangigkeitserklarung der USA den »pursuit of happiness« neben »life« und »liberty« als ein unverauserliches Recht des Menschen. Nah und fremd neben dieser Formel steht der Ausruf des Jakobiners Saint-Just wenige Monate vor dessen Enthauptung in einer Rede vom 3. Marz 1794: »Le bonheur est une idee neuve en Europe!« - »Das Gluck ist eine neue Idee in Europa!« (Saint-Just 2004, 673; Fischer 1977, 377 [Ubers, ge-and.;d.Verf]).
