Offset Triangular Mesh Using the Multiple Normal Vectors of a Vertex

Su-Jin Kim; Dong-Yoon Lee; Min-Yang Yang

AbstractThis paper introduces and illustrates the results of a new method for offsetting triangular mesh by moving all vertices along the multiple normal vectors of a vertex. The multiple normal vectors of a vertex are set the same as the normal vectors of the faces surrounding the vertex, while the two vectors with the smallest difference are joined repeatedly until the difference is smaller than allowance. Offsetting with the multiple normal vectors of a vertex does not create a gap or overlap at the smooth edges, thereby making the mesh size uniform and the computation time short. In addition, this offsetting method is accurate at the sharp edges because the vertices are moved to the normal directions of faces and joined by the blend surface. The method is also useful for rapid prototyping and tool path generation if the triangular mesh is tessellated part of the solid models with curved surfaces and sharp edges. The suggested method and previous methods are implemented on a PC using C++ and illustrate...

An On-line System Architecture for Remote Energy Monitoring of CNC Machine Tools

Sung-Ho Nam; Ki-Hyeong Song; Jae-Yong Baek; Dong-Yoon Lee; Kwangyeol Ryu

Enhancing energy efficiency of machine tools causes substantial impacts on the manufacturing industries, to cope with the competitive introduction of the total energy management strategies. Real-time energy monitoring is essential to identify energy consumption patterns of the machine tools and correlate them with the energy management strategy. Integrated analysis of machine tool`s operation status and the corresponding energy usage is most important to accurately evaluate the energy efficiency under the various machining process environments. This paper proposes a system architecture to realize the online energy monitoring system and the embedded energy monitoring approach interconnected with the CNC kernel. The shop-floor operation management system is presented to integrate the proposed online energy monitoring approach.

Incomplete 2-manifold Mesh Based Tool Path Generation

Sung-Gun Lee; Su-Jin Kim; Min-Yang Yang; Dong-Yoon Lee

This paper presents a new paradigm for three-axis tool path generation based on an incomplete two-manifold mesh model; namely, an inexact polyhedron. When geometric data is transferred from one system to another system and tessellated for tool path generation, the model does not have any topological data between meshes and facets. In contrast to the existing polyhedral machining approach, the proposed method generates tool paths from an incomplete two-manifold mesh model. In order to generate gouge-free tool paths, cutter-location meshes (CL-meshes) are generated by offsetting boundary edges, boundary vertices, and facets. The CL-meshes are sliced by machining planes and the calculated intersections are sorted, trimmed, and linked. The grid method is used to reduce the computing time when range searching problems arise. The method is fully implemented and verified by machining an incomplete two-manifold mesh model.

The Performance Test on Me-DLC Films for Improving Wear Resistance of LM-Guide

Eun-Goo Kang; Dong-Yoon Lee; Seong-Young Kim

Recently, surface modification technology is of importance to improve the wear resistance and the corrosive resistance for high accurate mechanical parts such as LM guide, Ball Screw and Roller Bearing etc., Those has generally featured on rolling contact mechanism to improve not only the wear and the friction, but also the accuracy and the corrosion performances. For surface modifications of high accurate mechanical parts, normally thermal spray, PVD, CVD and E.P. processes have been used with many materials such as DLC, raydent, W, Ni, Ti etc. Diamondlike carbon (DLC) films possess a combination of attractive properties and have been largely employed to modify the tribological behaviors such as friction, wear, corrosion, fretting fatigue, biocompatibility, etc. However, for rolling contact mechanism mechanical parts DLC films are needed to study for commercial benefit. Rolling contact mechanism has features on effects of cyclic motions and stresses, and also not simply sliding motions. The papers focused on the performance test of wear and corrosive resistance according to Me-DLC film thickness. And also, its thickness effect of wear analysis was carried out through the simulation of the maximum shear stress under the rolling contact surface. As the results, Me-DLC films have more potential to improve the wear resistance for high precision mechanical parts than raydent films.

Improving Dimensional Accuracy of Micropatterns by Compensating Dynamic Balance of a Roll Mold

Dong-Yoon Lee; Sanghyun 홍상현 Hong; Ki-Hyeong Song; Eun-Goo Kang; Seok Woo Lee

In the fields of display, optics, and energy, it is important to improve micropattern-machining technology for achieving small patterns, large surface areas, and low cost. Unlike flat molds, roll molds have the following advantages: they can be manufactured within a short time, larger surface areas can be obtained, and continuous molding can be achieved. In this study, we aim to investigate the causes for errors in the shapes for a micropattern-machining process, and we show that by compensating the dynamic balance of roll molds, the dimensional accuracy of machined parts can be improved. The experimental results show that dynamic-balance compensation for a roll mold reduced the mass unbalance and the vibrations of the roll mold, and as a result, the dimensional accuracy of machined micropattems has been improved.
