An On-line System Architecture for Remote Energy Monitoring of CNC Machine Tools

Sung-Ho Nam; Ki-Hyeong Song; Jae-Yong Baek; Dong-Yoon Lee; Kwangyeol Ryu

Enhancing energy efficiency of machine tools causes substantial impacts on the manufacturing industries, to cope with the competitive introduction of the total energy management strategies. Real-time energy monitoring is essential to identify energy consumption patterns of the machine tools and correlate them with the energy management strategy. Integrated analysis of machine tool`s operation status and the corresponding energy usage is most important to accurately evaluate the energy efficiency under the various machining process environments. This paper proposes a system architecture to realize the online energy monitoring system and the embedded energy monitoring approach interconnected with the CNC kernel. The shop-floor operation management system is presented to integrate the proposed online energy monitoring approach.

Topic Maps provide a fairly simple but very powerful meta-model for the representation of knowledge models. As a technology for implementation of semantic Web, topic maps characteristics are integration of distributed data and supporting of semantic based searching in order to find accurate information. For the feature of topic maps, we have to design ontology and deploy data properly in order to configure knowledge from information resource which exists inside specific domain. This paper describes a proposed methodology for creating Topic Maps. The methodology is designed for the development of an initial ontology for a Semantic Web, but can be adapted for other purposes. For creating topic maps using supported methodology, it described injection mold technology information based on ontology which is on the engineering collaboration hub. Tools for creating topic maps are introduced and it described converting data from injection mold technology information to Topic Map. Knowledge library on engineering collaboration hub of KITECH represented the example of Semantic Web for knowledge search of injection-mold technology information.

An air-guided and fly-cutting system for biconic-Zernike surfaces

HyungTae Kim; Ki-Hyeong Song; Young-Jae Choi; Sung-Chul Kim

A 4-axis machine using air guides was developed in order to achieve biconic-Zernike surfaces, one of the F-theta surfaces in this study. A Zernike surface is considered as complete in its optical characteristics; however, its mathematical model is non-linear and complex, resulting in difficulties in generating machining the tool path. This study proposes an approach for generating a tool path for biconic-Zernike surfaces using the normal vector of surface equations under the assumption of a fly-cutter. In order to improve the control accuracy, air guides, instead of mechanical bearings, were designed and installed on linear transfer units. The air guides were designed to maintain an air gap clearance between 4.0μm and 5.0μm. When designing mechanisms on the air guides, uniform pay load distribution was considered to minimize the magnitude of the mechanical momentum. Control accuracy in conventional motion and position error are indicated in case of micro step motion and tracking of the biconic-Zernike surface.

Improving Dimensional Accuracy of Micropatterns by Compensating Dynamic Balance of a Roll Mold

Dong-Yoon Lee; Sanghyun 홍상현 Hong; Ki-Hyeong Song; Eun-Goo Kang; Seok Woo Lee

In the fields of display, optics, and energy, it is important to improve micropattern-machining technology for achieving small patterns, large surface areas, and low cost. Unlike flat molds, roll molds have the following advantages: they can be manufactured within a short time, larger surface areas can be obtained, and continuous molding can be achieved. In this study, we aim to investigate the causes for errors in the shapes for a micropattern-machining process, and we show that by compensating the dynamic balance of roll molds, the dimensional accuracy of machined parts can be improved. The experimental results show that dynamic-balance compensation for a roll mold reduced the mass unbalance and the vibrations of the roll mold, and as a result, the dimensional accuracy of machined micropattems has been improved.

WEB-BASED COLLABORATIVE ENGINEERING FOR INJECTION MOLD DEVELOPMENT

Dong-Yoon Lee; Ki-Hyeong Song; Seok Woo Lee; Hon-Zong Choi; Kwangyeol Ryu

Injection molding is one of the most important manufacturing processes enabling present mass-production. The recent evolutions of technology related to injection molding result in the difficulties in developing the molds. As a result, a higher level of engineering technology should be considered for the developmental stage. This paper presents the web-based engineering collaboration among mold makers, experts, and product makers. Pre-examination and post-verification in the moldmaking process were investigated carefully and implemented in the web environment. Hundreds of engineering collaborations were conducted via developed systems. Surveyed results show that these collaborations help small and medium sized moldmaking enterprises reduce cost and delivery time, while they increase the quality of molds.

Win-Win Model between Large Enterprises and Small and Medium Enterprises based on Engineering Collaboration

Dong-Yoon Lee; Ki-Hyeong Song; Eun-Goo Kang; Young-Jae Choi; Hon-Zong Choi

As a strategy for survival in the recent global competition environment, the collaborations between enterprises are more important than the past. This paper presents the engineering collaboration model between the large and the SMEs (small and medium enterprises) in the field of injection molds. The proposed model was designed based on the needs of fields and was implemented in the form of portal site. It provides the integrated visualization system of analysis results of CAE (computer aided engineering)/CAI (computer aided inspection) and Web-based conferencing system. The developed model contributed to both of large and SMEs in the way of good quality, cost saving, and delivery shortening.
