ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To verify the adequacy and factors associated with compliance with the immunization schedule (BCG, DTP-Hib, MMR, PCV-10) in children hospitalized with pneumonia at a pediatric referral hospital in Northeast Brazil. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive study with an analytical component, with a sample of 452 children hospitalized with pneumonia at the Instituto de Medicina Integral Prof. Fernando Figueira, between 2010 and 2013. The inclusion criterion was children aged from one month to less than five years of age with proof in the immunization record. The exclusion criterion was the presence of hospital-acquired pneumonia or concomitant disease. We have evaluated the adequacy of the immunization schedule for the BCG, tetravalent, MMR, and 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate (PCV-10) vaccines. We used the chi-square test and Fishers exact test followed by multivariate Poisson regression, estimating the crude and adjusted prevalence ratios and respective 95% confidence intervals. The variables with p < 0.20 in the univariate analysis were included in the multivariate analysis. RESULTS: There was good adequacy in the immunization schedule, except for PCV-10, which presented a percentage lower than 85%. We have observed an association between adequate compliance with the immunization schedule and education level of the mother (89.9% complete high school), sex of the child (87.2% female), age of the child (94.2% younger than six months), and breastfeeding (84.3% breastfed). CONCLUSIONS: Given the high rate of education level of the mother and the high percentage of breastfeeding, we can understand that there is a better understanding of the health of the child by the mothers studied in this study, showing the effectiveness of public policies for infant feeding. However, children did not have good adequacy of the immunization schedule of PCV-10, one of the main vaccines against pneumonia, which can be one of the main factors in the causes of hospitalization, with no influence on the classification of the severity of the disease. In this way, we emphasize that the causes of pneumonia morbidity are not associated with a single factor.OBJETIVO: Verificar a adequacao e os fatores associados ao cumprimento do esquema vacinal (BCG, DTP-Hib, SCR, VCP-10) em criancas internadas com pneumonia em um hospital de referencia pediatrica no Nordeste do Brasil. METODOS: Estudo transversal, descritivo com componente analitico, composto por 452 criancas hospitalizadas por pneumonia no Instituto de Medicina Integral Prof. Fernando Figueira, entre […]

Background: Exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) is frequent in asthmatic athletes and, although less prevalent, also occurs in non-asthmatic ones. Breathing warm-humid air reduces this phenomenon. Objective: To evaluate EIB prevalence in semi-professional soccer athletes from a tropical humid region. Methods: We included athletes from a soccer team from the city of Recife-Brazil. A history of asthma or respiratory symptoms after exercise, demographic data and baseline FEV1 measurements were obtained. Thereafter, each athlete performed a standardized free field running to achieve 85% to 95% of the maximum calculated heart rate for the last 6 minutes of a total running time of 8 to 10 minutes. FEV1 was measured again at 5, 10, 15 and 30 minutes after exercise and EIB was defined as a reduction ≥ 10% from basal values in two consecutive time points. Results: Fifty-four male athletes aged between 13 and 21 years were evaluated. All denied exercise associated respiratory symptoms. Mean temperature and air humidity were 30.2°C ± 2.7°C and 82.1% ± 2.9%, respectively. EIB was found in two (7%) athletes (with a fall in FEV1 from baseline of 23.3% and 22.6%), none with history of asthma symptoms. Two other athletes had a history of asthma symptoms in childhood but no decrease in FEV1. Conclusion: The studied population of semi-professional soccer athletes with no exercise associated respiratory complaints showed a low BIE prevalence (7%). It may be necessary to perform the challenge with the athlete breathing dry air in those that also play in more dry and cold climates.

ABSTRACT Objective To investigate the relationship between total and segmental body fat, bone mineral density and bone mineral content in undergraduate students stratified according to nutritional status. Methods The study included 45 male undergraduate students aged between 20 and 30 years. Total and segmental body composition, bone mineral density and bone mineral content assessments were performed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Subjects were allocated into three groups (eutrophic, overweight and obese). Results With the exception of upper limb bone mineral content, significantly higher (p<0.05) mean bone mineral density, bone mineral content, and relative body fat values were documented in the obese group. Total body and segmental relative body fat (lower limbs and trunk) were positively correlated (p<0.05) with bone mineral density in the overweight group. Upper limb fat was negatively correlated (p<0.05) with bone mineral content in the normal and eutrophic groups. Conclusion Total body and segmental body fat were correlated with bone mineral density and bone mineral content in male undergraduate students, particularly in overweight individuals.

Introduction: The relationship between physical type and cardiovascular risk has been studied in several populations worldwide. In Brazil, studies evaluating this relationship are scarce, especially when physically active individuals are concerned. Objective: To analyze the relationship of the somatotype with cardiovascular risk factors and waist-height ratio (WHtR) in physically active individuals. Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 280 individuals, users of the jogging track at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) in Recife, PE, Brazil. To identify the level of physical activity, we used the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Individuals classified as very active, active or irregularly active A or B were included in the sample. Physically inactive individuals were excluded from the analysis. The somatotype was estimated by the anthropometric protocol proposed by Carter and Heath (1990). We determined as cardiovascular risk factors smoking, alcohol consumption, and blood pressure (BP). We used descriptive statistics to characterize the sample, and then used a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with a significance level of p<0.05. Results: No significant relationship for the variables smoking and alcohol consumption. In the analysis of BP (Pillai’s trace = 0.082; F=8.187; p<0.05) and WHtR (Pillai’s trace = 0.298; F=39.081; p<0.05) there was statistical significance for the somatotype. Conclusions: The physical type was positive and significantly related to BP and WHtR, showing that this anthropometric indicator can be used for early prediction of the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.INTRODUCCION: La relacion entre el tipo de cuerpo y el riesgo cardiovascular, se ha estudiado en varias poblaciones de todo el mundo.
