This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of video game exercise training (VGET) on the musculoskeletal function of older adults. The review was carried out in the PubMed, LILACS, WEB OF SCIENCE, WEB OF KNOWLEDGE, PEDro, and Cochrane CENTRAL. Sixteen controlled clinical trials were included, and the risks of bias were measured using the JADAD scale. There was no evidence that VGET might be effective on functional mobility (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.23, 95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.13 to 0.59) or on balanced self-efficacy (SMD = 0.15, 95% CI: −0.29 to 0.60). Future randomized controlled trials with greater methodological rigor, focusing on the parameters used to prescribe the exercises, are necessary.

The effects of Kinect Sports® and Kinect Adventures® on the endurance of lumbar-pelvic muscles in healthy young adults were analyzed. Forty participants (26 women and 14 men, from 18 to 30 years old) were sorted by convenience into a control group (CG, n = 20) and an intervention group (IG, n=20). The muscles of the trunk (flexor, extensor and lateral flexor) were assessed in three periods: before the intervention (T0), after five weeks (T5) and after 12 weeks (T12). Only the IG underwent training with Kinect Sports® and Kinect Adventures® (XBOX360 Kinect®), in pairs, twice a week, during 12 weeks. To analyze the differences between Fisioter Pesqui. 2016;23(4):365-371 366 groups, mixed ANOVA test was used with repeated measures design 2 (treatment group: CG vs. IG) x3 (lumbar-pelvic complex tests: T0 vs. T5 vs. T12) (p<0.05). The IG showed a significant increase in the endurance of trunk extensors and lateral flexors (F2,76=3.947, p=0.03; F2,76=3.763, p=0.02), respectively, after 12 weeks of intervention, compared to the CG. It was concluded that EXG training (XBOX360 Kinect Sports® and Kinect Adventures®) improved the resistance of the lumbar-pelvic muscles of healthy young adults. This protocol may be considered an instrument for the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders in the lumbar region.

Introduction Physical exercise is indicated to reduce the incidence of musculoskeletal symptoms in teachers. Objective To evaluate the effects of muscular endurance training on muscle strength and musculoskeletal symptoms related to the lower limbs of public elementary school teachers.Materials and methods Thirty-one female teachers were divided into two groups: control (CG, n = 15) and muscular endurance training (TG, n = 16). The training consisted of two sets of 15 repetitions of exercises for quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups, twice a week, for 7 weeks, which were conducted with 50% of 10 repetition maximum(10RM) (first to fourth week) and 60% of 10 RM (fifth to seventh week). Musculoskeletal symptoms (Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire), isometric peak torque (Load cell) and muscle strength (10RM) were assessed before and after intervention. ANOVA for repeated measures and Tukey post hoc were used to analyse strength and peak torque of quadriceps and hamstrings and Chi-square goodness-of-fit test were used to analyse the frequency of occurrence of osteomuscular symptoms. Results The highest incidence of symptoms was found in the lumbar region in both groups. Training caused increased muscle strength of the quadriceps and hamstrings, but there were no significant differences in either the peak torque in the quadriceps and hamstrings or in the reduction of musculoskeletal symptoms. Conclusion The exercise program performed in this study increased the dynamic strength in the TG in relation to the CG, but did not alter the incidence of symptoms in the lumbar region and lower limbs in neither of the groups. Thus, results suggest that the duration of intervention may not have been enough to increase peak torque and decrease musculoskeletal symptoms.
