OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the body-checking, inappropriate eating attitudes and body dissatisfaction in undergraduate students from both sexes. METHODS: Five hundred eighty-seven undergraduate students (311 men) were surveyed. The body-checking behaviours (women - Body Checking Questionnaire; men - Male Body Checking Questionnaire), inappropriate eating attitudes (Eating Attitudes Test-26) and body dissatisfaction (Body Shape Questionnaire) were evaluated. Body mass and height were self-referred to calculate the body mass index (BMI). Descriptive, inferential and qui-square test (Fisher exact test) statistics were performed using the Statistic 8.0 software and adopting significant level of 5%. RESULTS: Body-checking behaviours are associated with inappropriate eating attitudes and body dissatisfaction in both sexes. Women and men showed differences between the variables evaluated, being higher in women. CONCLUSION: Body-checking is a present and high frequency behaviour in undergraduate students with risk for eating disorders and also with those dissatisfied with their body image.

The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review of studies related to esthetic plastic surgery. Thus, studies conducted on this topic were searched. The searches were performed on the Scopus, PubMed, and Medline databases. The following keywords were used: “cosmetic surgery,” “body dysmorphic disorder,” and “eating disorders.” The data were summarized in three topics: “profile of patients and motivational aspects,” “plastic surgery and body dysmorphic disorder,” and “plastic surgery and eating disorders.” We conclude that the main reason for undergoing esthetic plastic surgery is dissatisfaction with the body . In addition, body dysmorphic disorder has a high prevalence in these individuals. Moreover, even after the completion of the surgery, these individuals are still dissatisfied with their bodies . The most common plastic surgeries among patients with eating disorders are silicone breast implantation and liposuction of the abdomen. From the literature review, we can perceive the need for health care professionals to have access to information regarding this group of individuals. ■ ABSTRACT

Introduction: Brazil is the world leader in the number of plastic surgeries being performed. Body dissatisfaction and sociocultural influence are the main factors that lead persons to undergo these procedures. Thus, in this study, we aimed to compare the levels of body dissatisfaction and sociocultural influence among women who have already undergone some type of plastic surgery and those who have never undergone such procedures. Method: A total of 115 volunteers were divided into groups according to the number of surgeries. The Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ, for body dissatisfaction) and the Sociocultural Attitudes Toward Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ-3, for sociocultural influence) were used. A normality test was performed, and descriptive and inferential statistics were calculated. The KruskalWallis test was performed for the comparison between groups in terms of the analyzed variables. Results: Body dissatisfaction was observed in 25.71% of the unoperated group, in 17.78% of women who had undergone one plastic surgery, and in 20% of the group with more than one surgery. In SATAQ-3, no statistically significant difference was found in the subscale scores. Conclusion: The body dissatisfaction of women who had undergone plastic surgeries was not different from those who have not undergone such procedures. Moreover, the sociocultural influence was not different between the groups. The contribution of body satisfaction and the influence of media on the decision to undergo plastic surgery may be modulated by other factors. ■ ABSTRACT
