ABSTRACT Two devastating cases of multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa endophthalmitis after keratoplasty as the result of transmission from the same donor were confirmed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Strategies for preventing donor-to-host transmission, such as the use of antimicrobial agents of greater efficacy and better methods for detecting microorganisms in preservation medium, could minimize this type of transmission.

Resumen pt: Estudo descritivo, de natureza quali-quantitativa, que objetivou identificar as estrategias de enfrentamento mais utilizadas por familiares de pacientes ...This descriptive, qualitative study aims to identify the coping strategies used most by the family members of patients with chronic kidney disease receiving hemodialysis. The data were collected through interviews, with the Coping Strategies Inventory questionnaire administered to ten family members, and were submitted to descriptive statistics and to thematic content analysis. The strategy used most was escape-avoidance, demonstrating that the family members prefer not to face the situation. The second most-used strategy was social support, ratified by the fact that they stated that they talk with other persons and professionals, seeking information about the problem, and because they accept the support received positively. The third was problem resolution, represented by the attitude of accepting responsibility for the care, either through strong affective bonds or through a feeling of responsibility established prior to the disease. The families use coping strategies of different intensities, while, nevertheless, indicating involvement and major participation in the care for the patient.

Escola Paulista de Enfermagem, Universidade Federal de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brazil. Confl icts of interest: there are no confl icts of interest to declare. Abstract Objective: To understand the need for information from the family members of children with retinoblastoma. Methods: A qualitative study based on the Patient and Family Centered Care Model. Families of children undergoing treatment at a referral institution in pediatric oncology participated. Qualitative content analysis guided the data collection and analysis. Results: The strength of information on retinoblastoma for the family of these children reveals the value the family assigns to the information about the child’s illness during a time of intense suffering; the paths they take to obtain the information; and, the elements considered to be essential to feel fulfi lled in their own right. Conclusion: Provision of information that respects the family’s time is essential; it must be honest, and contemplate future perspectives for the child, in a dialogical space. Thus, a practice based on the Patient and Family Centered Care Model is promoted.
