This article provides an overview of sport policies in Brazil. The investigation methodology involved a critical analysis of important national policy documents dedicated to the subject. The article begins with an analysis of the creation of the field, since the passage of the first laws in the 1940s, up to the current stage of Brazilian sport. As a conclusion, the paper finds that the sports policy in Brazil moved away from an the organization model centred only on the state. However, it was noted that, despite the greater autonomy of sports entities, it is public funding that maintains the sports structure in the country.

This article attempts to revive the process of creating the Ministry of Sport in Brazil and discuss some aspects of conflicting politics of scale present in this policy cycle, which may be related to the reformulation effected by the recent Decree n. 7.529/2011. For this, we use the semi-structured interviews with manager agents of the Ministry of Sport. We argue in particular that the creation of the National Department of Sport, Education, Leisure and Social Inclusion is late reflection of some tensions involving agents from two different parties who have been since 2003 (year of creation of the Ministry) involved in the administration of the Ministry of Sports.

This article explores public expenditure in Brazilian sport from 2004 to 2015 and aims to understand if hosting sport mega-events has influenced investments in different types of sport (elite sport and educational/participation sport). Data were collected through governmental records and examined through descriptive statistics. Positive and negative variations of spending were reported, regarding both the overall budget allocated to sport and among the different types of sport. This study concluded that sport mega-events have influenced the funding of sports programs to some extent, but other aspects of public funding are likely to be more significant influencers on the observed variations. The study also argues that further research on different host countries is necessary to understand the impact of sport mega-events on public sport funding.

Two major aspects of Jose Lins do Rego’s chronicles were the reference to soccer and the establishment of a dialogue (or discussion) with his intellectual circle. The influence of Gilberto Freyre and Mario Filho were the most prominent ones, but Rego had many other dialogic counterparts. Thus, this paper aims to understand Jose Lins do Rego’s stand in his sports chronicles at the same time it sheds light on the exchange of ideas within the Brazilian intelligentsia. Ultimately, we conclude that Jose Lins’ chronicles, full of rationality and passion, have played multiple roles when related to the Brazilian intellectual production.

This paper presents the main facilitators and barriers for the implementation of two social projects and for the participation of children in them. The research was qualitative and data were collected through semi-structured interviews with children and their parents/guardians; professionals and volunteers of the projects. Some factors are sometimes facilitators or barriers to implementation: the presence or absence of qualified professionals and of support for their work, quantity and/or quality of partnerships; level of consistency in the work of the partners, quantity and quality of space and equipment available; level of involvement of the community and/or parents. The main facilitators for participation are: access to sport activities, socialization opportunities, and perception of the projects as saver than streets. The main barrier is lack of security in the passage to and from the projects. The results of this research can contribute to the improved of these and other similar projects.
