Age- and gender-based market segmentation: A structural understanding

Abstract Age- and gender-based market segmentation studies have appeared frequently in the travel literature. The authors examined the implicit assumptions made in previous age- and gender-related studies. In addition, a well-established marketing theory was employed to compare age- and gender-based market segments. The findings indicate that the two age (senior vs. younger) and gender segments are heterogeneous and provide different measurement reliabilities. However, the decision making process of the different age and gender groups was the same. The findings and implications are discussed.

Supply and Demand for Hospitality/Tourism Management Faculty in the United States

This article investigates the supply and demand for hospitality/tourism management (HTM) doctorates in the U.S. A survey questionnaire was developed and mailed to 144 administrators of the programs offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in HTM. Findings in the study indicate that approximately 15–20 students graduate every year with a doctoral degree in HTM. The administrators expect doctoral student enrollments to increase by about one third over the next five years. On the demand side, there has been a significant increase in the number of HTM doctorates hired. According to the survey results, more than half of the doctorates hired by HTM schools during the last three years received their degrees in HTM. Advertisements in the CHRIE newsletter, Communique, announced a total of 201 faculty positions during the last three years in which 74% of the positions required a doctoral degree. This study concludes with implications for prospective students and HTM school administrators.

Attributes Associated with Success as Perceived by Managers in Three Levels of Multidepartment Management in Acute Care Hospitals

This research identified personal attributes for success as perceived by three distinct levels of management in contracted managed services within acute care hospitals. From the researcher-designed survey, factor analysis results demonstrated that the successful multi-department manager has vision; is creative; acts as a mentor; has the ability to develop new ideas; possesses honesty, ethical behavior, and dependability; has leadership abilities to develop subordinates; builds and leads teams; and delegates. ANOVA was employed to test whether the three levels of management responded differently to the survey questions concerning attributes necessary for success. Managers of five or more departments considered leadership attributes far more important to success than did managers of one to two departments. Managers of three to four departments placed significantly more importance on analyzing and admitting mistakes than did managers of one to two departments and managers of five or more departments.

To that end, the author conducted a national survey of members of the Travel Industry Association of America to assess the interest for a “mature traveler conference” in order to develop the market.
