Food‐Retail Development and the Myth of Everyday Low Prices: The Case of Brazil

Guilherme Fowler de Avila Monteiro; Elizabeth Maria Merc Querido Farina; Rubens Nunes

This article analyses the changes in Brazilian food retailing by investigating the co‐existence of, and the pricing variation across, large supermarket chains and small independent supermarkets. It uses cointegration tests to show that, despite the widespread belief that small supermarkets are inefficient and charge higher prices, they in fact charge lower prices. Accordingly, in contrast to the prevailing literature on food‐retail development, competition in food retail is complex and cannot be described as a simple Darwinian process of market concentration. The article explores the survival of small retail and its consequences for the current discussion on modern food retail in developing countries.

The Role of Empirical Research in the Study of Complex Forms of Governance in Agroindustrial Systems

Guilherme Fowler de Avila Monteiro; Maria Sylvia Macchione Saes; Silvia Morales de Queiroz Caleman; Décio Zylbersztajn

The growing complexity of supply chains poses new challenges for Agricultural Research Centers and statistical agencies. The aim of this perspective paper is to discuss the role of empirical research in understanding the complex forms of governance in agribusiness. The authors argue that there are three fundamental levels of analysis: (i) the basic structure of the market, (ii) the formal contractual arrangements that govern relations within the agroindustrial system and (iii) the transactional dimensions governed by non-contractual means. The case of the agrochemical industry in Brazil illustrates how traditional analyses that only address market structure are insufficient to fully explain the agricultural sector and its supply chain. The article concludes by suggesting some indicators which could be collected by statistical agencies to improve understanding of the complex relationships among agribusiness segments. In doing so, the paper seeks to minimize costs and to enable a better formulation of public and private policies.

A Property Rights Approach to Strategy

Guilherme Fowler de Avila Monteiro; Decio Zylbersztajn

This article is about how resources can be conceptualized as bundles of attributes for which one can assign economic property rights. Strategic considerations are deliberately incorporated into the analysis through the assessment of the activities of capture and protection of property rights, along with the examination of the institutional environment. These basic elements combine in order to design an approach to strategy. In developing this approach, the authors identify four key questions for structuring the strategy formulation process of the firm. The analytical framework is illustrated through a particular case: the collection of royalties on the genetically modified (GM) technology in soybean seeds.

Institutional change and capability building: some remarks on the institution-based view of strategy

Guilherme Fowler de Avila Monteiro; Anelise Pianna

The strategy literature has seen the emergence of a new strategic approach. The so-called institution-based view examines how the institutional environment may influence the strategic behaviour of firms. The main objective of this perspective paper is to examine the theoretical foundations of the institution-based view and to discuss one specific aspect: the relationship between institutional change and capability building. Seeking inspiration in the analysis of resources and competences and in the economic literature of institutions, this paper proposes a simple model which relates institutional change and the formatting of organisational competences. The model is then illustrated by the internationalisation path of the Indian pharmaceutical industry. Specifically, the paper explores the idea that the building of capabilities in the manufacturing of drugs made possible by an institutional change in the 1970s contributed to the internationalisation of Indian companies in the 2000s.

Economic governance of property rights: comparative analysis on the collection of royalties in genetically modified soybean seeds

Guilherme Fowler de Avila Monteiro; Decio Zylbersztajn

This paper examines the governance of property rights on genetically modified (GM) soybean seeds. Specifically, the article undertakes a comparative analysis on the collection of royalties in GM soybean seeds in the U.S. and Brazil. For each country, the authors describe the regulatory framework governing the protection of biotechnology innovations in agriculture and investigate the mechanisms of royalty collection in GM soybean seeds. The paper also offers econometric evidence linking the capture of value on biotech innovations and the protection mechanisms deployed by biotech firms. The results suggest that, subject to the institutional environment, firms may choose to transact a GM attribute separated from the seed, building specialized governance structures framed around the genetic attribute and not around the seed as a whole.

The Contractual Nature of Two-Sided Platforms: A Research Note

Guilherme Fowler de Avila Monteiro; Elizabeth Maria Merc Querido Farina; Rubens Nunes

The present paper investigates the organizational nature of two-sided platforms. The article departs from the classical case of an industry that presents some intrinsic characteristics which give to it the status of a two-sided market. Specifically, the paper considers that the decision of a firm to operate as a traditional merchant or as a platform is based on a bargaining process between the firm and its suppliers, resulting in an incomplete contract which is supported by a particular combination of price and non-price instruments. Founded on this approach, this essay addresses some fundamental issues in the economics of hybrid forms in two-sided platforms through the examination of the decision of a supermarket to operate as a conventional retailer or as a platform.

Sustainable food chains: the role of collective action and government incentives

Silvia Morales de Queiroz Caleman; Guilherme Fowler de Avila Monteiro; George Hendrikse

We examine the role of collective actions as supporting elements of a long lasting sustainable food supply chain. The main contribution of this article is to link the idea of sustainable supply chain and the collective action problem (horizontal coordination) that may be required in order to deal with externalities related to the provision of sustainable products. In addition, we analyze how the presence or absence of government incentives shapes collective action in the food industry. We base our analysis in a simple formal argument inspired by case studies regarding sustainable farming in Brazil and the Netherlands. Results show that horizontal mechanisms of cooperation maintain positive levels of sustainability, even in the absence of direct payments by the government.
