Der neue V6-TDI-Motor von Audi

Richard Bauder; Sven Bechle; Wolfgang Dorsch; Hans-Werner Pölzl; Ralph Riegger; Hans-Josef Schiffgens

The 4.0-litre V8 TDI now being introduced by Audi is the first diesel in its new family of V engines. The new V8 diesel is notable for its high power output of 202 kW and vigorous torque of 650 Nm. Its noise pattern and refinement are excellent. This V8 TDI engine harmonises convincingly with the new Audi A8, making it the most sporty diesel-engine car in the large luxury class. Development of the new engine is described in two articles. The first part presents the engine’s design and mechanical features, while the second describes its thermodynamics and applications.

Audi V6 TDI engine

The first 2.5-litre V6 TDI engine with four valves per cylinder went into production in 1997. It developed 110 kW and complied with the EU II exhaust emission legislation. In 1999 it was joined by an uprated V6 TDI engine with its output increased to 132 kW, which none the less satisfied the Euro 3 exhaust emission limits. The exceptional potential offered by this engine is now evident in the fact that it has been developed into the first production V6 TDI unit for use in a large luxury car that is capable of satisfying the extremely stringent Euro 4 exhaust emission limits.

The new Audi V6 TDI engine

Part 1 dealt with the design and mechanical features of the V6 TDI engine [1]. This second part describes the thermodynamic development work that was necessary to comply with the extremely stringent Euro 4 exhaust emission limits in a large luxury car. The ambitious target of a power output of 132 kW from a displacement of 2.5 litres while remaining within the Euro 4 limits was achieved by adopting new or further optimised exhaust emission reduction techniques.
