A ‘practice of the variant’ and the origins of the standard. Presentation of a variationist linguistics method for a corpus of Old French charters

Concerning the history of the linguistic standardisation of French, the period which begins with Louis XIV and the 17th century is well known and has been well documented.However, to the present day, discussions about the origins and the early periods of standardisation often suffer from a lack of intralinguistic evidence. The present article makes some suggestions which are designed to help compensate for this lack of evidence, and discusses some results from a German research project on Old French charters.

Introduction to the special issue: "Negation and Clitics in French: Interaction and Variation"

This introduction presents very briefly some of the main issues currently discussed around negation particles and clitics in contemporary French and taken up by the six contributions it assembles, namely language change (grammaticalisation of clitics into agreement markers, completion of the Jespersen Cycle) vs. stable variation, and external (sociolinguistic) or internal (phonotactic, prosodic, or syntactic) factors triggering variation in both cases; the hypothesis of a potential diglossia in French opposing two grammars with considerable syntactic differences. Five out of six contributions focus on modern standard and non-standard varieties of French, with a formal theoretical background, while one shows a more philological-descriptive approach and is dedicated to Old French manuscripts.

Intralinguistic and extralinguistic variation factors in Old French negation with ne-Ø, ne-mie, ne-pas and ne-point across different text types

Old French sentential negation (NEG) represents an important morphosyntactic change that has been investigated by a large number of scholars from different theoretical approaches. From the 12th to the 14th (and mainly in the 13th) century, there are two variants of this variable in competition: NEG with only ne (the older variant) and NEG with ne + pas/mie/point , etc. The research presented in this paper has been motivated by the wish to find relevant factors for this variation in Old French. In order to identify factors of influence on the variable NEG with or without pas , mie and point , we analyse two subcorpora containing two different text types. The choice of the tested factors is rooted both in variational linguistics and in previous studies on Old French negation, implying (extralinguistic) diasystematic factors like diatopic and diastratic ones as well as intralinguistic factors like transitivity of the verb, word order and clause type. Main findings are the probable relevance of clause type and the influence of socially definable (diastratic) groups. Beyond this, the results across the two different text type are predominantly similar, but we found differences as well. This leads us to plead in favour of the importance of considering the factor text type while working on diachronic corpora.

La sensibilidad de los seres humanos ante los fenómenos de contacto entre grupos culturales diversos varió mucho en los años finales del XIX. Desde la visita del presidente Nixon a China (1972) y el fin de la guerra de Vietnam para los Estados Unidos (1973) hasta la caída del muro de Berlín (1989) y la disolución de la URSS (1991) se fue conformando un intento de ver al otro como un complemento y no como un oponente. Todavía no es ésta la percepción de millones de hombres, quizás de la mayoría, y el 11 de septiembre de 2001 ha contribuido desgraciadamente a ello; pero sí de los que trazan las líneas de pensamiento y acción social, la percepción culta, en la que se basan las líneas directivas. En el escaparate de la sensibilidad global que constituyen las series televisivas de difusión mundial, hay una en la que esta situación es nítida, Battlestar Galactica. En la primera versión de la serie, emitida en 1977, con la casi obligada excepción del coronel negro Tigh, el segundo de a bordo de la estrella de combate, los humanos (bastante uniformes y anglos) están por un lado y los demás, como enemigos, en el otro. Incluso los nemos, que viajan en el convoy como supuestos aliados, acaban convirtiéndose en enemigos peligrosos. En la rediseñada en 2003 (emitida en 2004) las tripulaciones de Galáctica y Pegasus son mucho más variadas racialmente. El nuevo actor que representa el papel del almirante Adama es un hispano muy significado, Edward James Olmos, en vez del anglo Lorne Greene, el pater familias de Bonanza. Un aeropuerto norteamericano de 2010 se parece más a un bar de Star Wars (1977) que a cualquier aeropuerto del año 1977. El lingüista se compenetra con esos cambios, aunque le preocupa que los contactos entre lenguas se perciban de un modo en el que se pierdan criterios evaluadores histórico-culturales. Se tiende a ignorar las características de la época en la que se produjeron los fenómenos de adaptación, integración, aculturación o simple contacto y se simplifican notablemente las duras condiciones en las que se realizan todavía hoy (Kroeber 1941, Voegelin/Harris 1945 y 1947, Hoijer 1948 y 1953, Greenberg 1948, Silva-Fuenzalida, 1949, Sapir 1950). Por ello son más necesarios los esfuerzos para recordar que la historia no ha sido nunca como los siglos posteriores hubieran deseado y que hay que ser realistas y aceptar los hechos como fueron, tratando de encontrar cada vez más y mejores claves. El contacto entre los españoles, pronto novohispanos, y los indígenas en los territorios del norte de la Nueva España y adyacentes, es decir, lo que hoy constituye el suroeste de los Estados Unidos, con parte del sureste (la Florida y sur de Georgia), ha sido muy poco conocido, sobre todo en comparación con lo que se sabe de los grandes virreinatos (Thomas 1941, Raup/Pounds 1953, Sturtevant 1962). The Diasystem and Its Role in Generating Meaning: Diachronic Evidence from Old French

The present study focuses on language variation. Although different schools have approached the subject in a variety of ways, little work has been done on what varying “means”, i.e., to what extent being part of a variety contributes to the genesis of meaning (semiosis). The focus of the present paper is to discuss semiosis according to variational linguistics. By following the diasystematic changes of a few Old French lexical elements, this analysis sheds light on the role of diasystematic information in generating meaning. Combining the results with recent multi-level semiosis models, we come to understand that semantic elements may pass from one semiosis level to another. Our proposal contributes to a better understanding of the relation between a variety and its variants.

Philologie, Macht, Spaß

Es kommt nicht oft vor, dass einer dezidiert philologischen Veröffentlichung die Ehre zuteil wird, in den Feuilletons führender Tageszeitungen gewürdigt zu werden. Hans Ulrich Gumbrechts Die Macht der Philologie / The Powers of Philology ist dies gelungen. Insbesondere im deutschsprachigen Raum stieß Gumbrechts Vivit! auf große Resonanz. Mancher Vertreter der reinen Wissenschaft könnte darob den Verdacht hegen, dass es sich um eine vulgarisation scientifique handelt, deren Wert für die Disziplin bescheiden ist. Im Folgenden wird das Bändchen aus philologischer Perspektive gelesen. Insbesondere interessiert uns, inwieweit und mit welchen Argumenten die im Klappentext der amerikanischen Ausgabe angelegte Dialektik («Although philology departments are steadily disappearing from contemporary educational establishments, in this book Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht demonstrates that the problems, standards and methods of philology remain as vital as ever») bearbeitet wird. Fünf Kernbereiche philologischer Tätigkeit werden vom Verfasser identifiziert und im Hinblick auf ihre «Macht» diskutiert. In Identifying Fragments [9Ð23] / Das Sammeln von Fragmenten [22Ð43] betont Gumbrecht die emotionalen Triebkräfte für die Beschäftigung mit überlieferten Textfragmenten. Er macht geltend, dass seit der Renaissance die Realpräsenz der Dinge mehr und mehr durch die Repräsentation vermittels immer komplexerer Signifikanten ersetzt wurde. Der allgemein akzeptierte Zusammenhang zwischen der Entstehung der Philologie als moderner Wissenschaft und der Romantik wird durch Gumbrechts Argumentation auf einer neuen Ebene schlüssig, indem die Wende zum 19. Jahrhundert als ein von der Krise der Repräsentation geprägter historischer Moment interpretiert wird, der das seit dem Mittelalter stetig reduzierte Verlangen nach realer Präsenz neu aufkommen ließ [10Ð13 am. / 24Ð28 dt.]. Das Kapitel Editing Texts [24Ð40] / Das Edieren von Texten [44Ð68] greift die Debatte zur New Philology auf. Ausgehend von Ramón Menéndez Pidals Bedeutung für die Hispanistik arbeitet Gumbrecht das wachsende Bewusstsein für die Vervielfachung der Editoren-, Autorenund Leserrollen heraus und plädiert dafür, die Vorstellung von einer einzig richtigen Edition (z.B. orientiert an einer «Originalversion») zugunsten einer editorischen Pluralität
