The aim of this study was to analyze the health-related physical fitness (HRPF) in students from Jequie, BA, Brazil. Therefore, the HRPF of 182 boys and 160 girls aged 7-12 years, students from public schools, was assessed by the application of 9-minute-run/walk (indicator of cardiorespiratory capacity), modified in one minute abdominal (indicator of abdominal strength and endurance), sit-and-reach (indicator of flexibility) motor tests. The sum of the triciptal and subscapular skinfolds thickness was used as indicator of body fat. The results found indicated higher prevalence of boys and girls below (19% and 49%, respectively) than above (3% and 1%, respectively) the criteria established by the AAHPERD (1988) for indicators of body fat. Conversely, only 51% of the boys and 58% of the girls in the sit-and-reach; 11% and 7%, respectively, in the modified in one minute abdominal; and 15% and 14%, respectively, in the 9-minute-run/walk reached the established criteria. Thus, the results suggest that effective intervention programs seem necessary for the promotion of alterations in the nutritional status as well as habitual physical activity of students from Jequie.

Objective: To investigate the agreement between two international criteria for classification of children and adolescents nutritional status. Methods: The study included 778 girls and 863 boys aged from six to 13 years old. Body mass and height were measured and used to calculate the body mass index. Nutritional status was classified according to the cut-off points defined by the World Health Organization and the International Obesity Task Force. The agreement was evaluated using Kappa statistic and weighted Kappa. Results: In order to classify the nutritional status, the agreement between the criteria was higher for the boys (Kappa 0.77) compared to girls (Kappa 0.61). The weighted Kappa was also higher for boys (0.85) in comparison to girls (0.77). Kappa index varied according to age. When the nutritional status was classified in only two categories - appropriate (thinness + accentuated thinness + eutrophy) and overweight (overweight + obesity + severe obesity) -, the Kappa index presented higher values than those related to the classification in six categories. Conclusions: A substantial agreement was observed between the criteria, being higher in males and varying according to the age. Objective: To investigate the agreement between two international criteria for classification of children and ado - lescents nutritional status. OBJECTIVE: To verify the agreement between two different cutoff points for cardiorespiratory fitness in schoolchildren, with ages ranging from seven to 10 years of both genders. METHODS: A cross-sectional study composed of 184 schoolchildren (106 boys and 78 girls) aged from seven to 10 years-old. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured by the run and walk test (9 minutes). Two cutoff points were used to indicate the performance in the run and walk test: Fitnessgram (1987) and Bergmann et al (2010). The agreement was verified by the McNemar test and the Kappa index, and p<0.05 was considered as significant. RESULTS: No differences were noticed between the percentage of fit subjects according to both cutoff criteria (Fitnessgram with 58.1% and Bergmann et al, 59.2%; p=0.864). Similarly, there was moderate concordance between the cutoff points (Kappa=0.61). CONCLUSIONS: Both cutoff points for physical fitness similarly classified the schoolchildren, regardless of gender.

This study aims to analyze the competitive behavior of young and adult handball athletes. Evaluated 143 young athletes (16.1 ± 0.7 years) of both sexes, participants of the Youth School Games, and 69 athletes (24.0 ± 4.3 years), all male participants of the Pan American club championship in the year 2009. To assess the competitive behavior we used the Sport Orientation Questionnaire instrument with subscales: compete (TQ1), win (TQ2) and set goals (TQ3). For data analysis descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney test were used, considering 5% of significance. Both young and adult athletes reported greater importance to the TQ3 domain. Comparing the groups, only the TQ3 domain did not show statistically significant difference with higher values for adult athletes. Thus, we can conclude that school and performance athletes showed similar competitive behavior, that is, there is a high tendency in the perception of victory in the competitive process, regardless differences of age and practice time. However, in both groups it was observed a greater emphasis on setting goals, and the performance athletes reported greater importance to the TQ3 compared to the young ones - 8.0 and 9.0, respectively.
