RFID is one of the latest trend in the industry. Its potential application can range from warehouse to library management. This project is aimed to build an autonomous robot with RFID application. The project integrates RFID reader and PIC microcontroller as the main components. The movement control comprises servo-motor with infrared sensors for the line follower. The whole programming operation was carried out by assembly language using MPLab 7.3. The robot has the ability to identify the items by reading the tag on the items. The robot will pick up the item and navigate to prescribed destination using line follower module to store the item at the appropriate place and location. A small white platform with black line is built for demonstration and testing.

Monitoring laboratory equipment record is important to ensure every item is always in place. Generally, in and out equipment is handled manually by technician by writing down the equipment information, including time and date in equipment circulation form. To automate the process, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is one of the most practical and applicable in real implementation in-line with the nature where most of the systems are made computerized. In this paper, a solution has been provided for the problem encountered in laboratory equipment monitoring system using RFID technology. This project consist four main parts: the tag, tag reader, system development and networking system. The RFID tag is tagged on the laboratory equipment where the tag contains laboratory equipment information and RFID reader is located at the door of each laboratory room. This monitoring system enables the head of laboratory and technician to monitor in-out equipment in actual environment and also increase the efficiency in managing equipment in the laboratory. Benefits of the system include enhancement of the safety of University asset and reduce losses of assets and enhancement of the laboratory inventory control of equipment.

Mohd Helmy Abd Wahab; Herdawatie Abdul Kadir; Ariffin Abdul Mutalib; Mohamad Farhan Mohamad Mohsin

This paper describes an ongoing project for recording examination attendance using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). The project is carried out to test in a university, where the system which is named Portable Examination Attendance System (PEAS) is integrated with the existing system for record extraction. The use of RFID technology enables the university management to avoid attendance forms from damages such as tear, lost, and misplaced. This paper describes about the design and development of PEAS in terms of hardware technology and software. In addition, some related works are reviewed and addressed to support this project. As a conclusion, this paper states some future works of this project.

Smart Recycle Bin: A Conceptual Approach of Smart Waste Management with Integrated Web Based System

Mohd Helmy Abd Wahab; Aeslina Abdul Kadir; Mohd Razali Tomari; Mohamad Hairol Jabbar

Nowadays, the trend is clear that the use of pervasive computing technology has taken place to improve waste management by providing electronic system which utilizing radio frequency identification at bin level. In this paper, we proposed a smart recycle bin application based on information in the smart card to automatically calculate the weight of waste and convert the weight into point then store it into the card. The wastes are tracked by smart bins using a RFID-based system integrating the web-based information system at the host server. Two crucial features of the selective sorting process can be improved using this approach. First, the user is assisted in the application of material waste classification. Second, the smart bin knows its content and can report back to the rest of the recycling chain.

GSM-based notification speed detection for monitoring purposes

Elia Nadira Sabudin; Siti Zarina Mohd Muji; Mohd Helmy Abd Wahab; Ayob Johari; Norazman Bin Ghani

This paper presents the design of GSM-based black box system for speed detection. The idea is clear that the current existing black box system only notify the driver through alarm systems and information is recorded in the black box. However, this could be impractical for the authorized personnel to check every public transports. With the rapid development of GSM application in monitoring purposes, the current system can be integrated to facilitate the authorized personnel and to ease the monitoring process as well. The purpose of this research is to design and integrate a new black-box system integrated with GSM notification system to send alert information to traffic authorized personnel or Transport Department through Short Message Services (SMS). The scope of this research is primarily concerned on express buses which prone to accident.

One of the powerful data mining analysis is it can generates different set of knowledge when similar problem is presented to different data mining techniques. In this paper, a programming dataset was mined using rough set in order to investigate the significant factors that may influence students programming performance based on information from previous student performance. Then, the result was compared with other researches which had previously explored the data using statistic, clustering, and association rule. The dataset consists of 419 records with 70 attributes were pre-processed and then mined using rough set. The result indicates rough set has identified several new characteristics. The student who has been exposed to programming prior to entering university and obtained average score in Mathematics, English, and Malay Language subject during secondary Malaysian School Certificate (SPM) examination were among strong indicators that contributes to good programming grades. Besides that, the personality factor; the investigative and social type plus average cognitive person were also found as important factors that influence programming. This finding can be a guideline for the faculty to plan teaching and learning program for new registered student.

Implementation of network-based smart order system

Mohd Helmy Abd Wahab; Herdawatie Abdul Kadir; Nadiah Ahmad; Ariffin Abdul Mutalib; Mohd Farhan Mohd Mohsin

This paper presents the development of smart order system in restaurant. The development of the system is primarily concerned to integrate and provide network system rather than the stand alone system which indicates the use of networking capabilities could provide efficient data communication as well as improved the management in restaurant. The development of the system strictly follows the system development life cycle. Generally, the system can be divided into 2 main components which are hardware design which are not discussed in details here and system development which primarily goals of the paper. The results indicate that the system works fine with the data communication works as planned.

Review on raindrop detection and removal in weather degraded images

Mohd Helmy Abd Wahab; Ching-Hung Su; Nasriah Zakaria; Rosalina Abdul Salam

Bad weather conditions lead the robustness of most surveillance and driver assistance system. Therefore this paper attempts to review the type of bad weather in a perspective of computer vision and image processing and some recent effort on raindrop detection and removal techniques which has been successfully designed and developed to enhance the image degraded by the bad weather.

Image Retrieval based on color and texture features

Ching-Hung Su; Mohd Helmy Abd Wahab; Tsai-Ming Hsieh

In this paper, the algorithm for a novel image retrieval scheme to retrieve images is presented. We address the unique algorithm to extract the colour pixel features by the HSV colour space and the texture features of Mpeg-7 Edge Histogram Descriptor .The proposed scheme transfers each image to a quantized colour code using the regulations of the properties in compliance with HSV model and subsequently using the quantized colour code along with the texture feature of Edge Histogram Descriptor to compare the images of database. We succeed in transferring the image retrieval problem to quantized code comparison. Thus the computational complexity is decreased obviously. Our results illustrate it has merits both of the content based image retrieval system and a text based image retrieval system.

A hardware based approach in designing infrared traffic light system

Mohd Azwan Azim Rosli; Mohd Helmy Abd Wahab; Rahmat Sanudin; Mohd Zainizan Sahdan

Nowadays, a traffic light is currently used to control the traffic at the road. The trend is clear that the technology of the traffic light is growing rapidly. However, there is still problem for the emergency vehicles to bypass when the traffic light is red. This is because the emergency vehicle is unable to reach the destination in short as well as there is an emergency case. So, the purpose of this project is to solve this problem. This paper presents the design of traffic light system that response for emergency vehicles to immediately bypass the traffic light. Hence, the emergency vehicle can reach the destination at the right time to save lives.
