The present study is a socio-historical research. It discusses the association of trained nurses in Brazil, which was represented by opponent groups, and the struggle of these groups in introducing their positions and viewpoints in the professional organizations. The investigation focuses the period of time between the foundation of the Brazilian Association of Nursing (ABEn), in 1926, until the first half of the twentieth century. Despite the political and doctrinal levels, which guided nursing strategies to fortify their positions in this environment, the articulation of opponent groups in the achievement of common professional objectives promoted the regulation and redefinition of the nursing profession.The present study is a socio-historical research.
