Personalization in e-learning systems is vital since they are used by a wide variety of students with different characteristics. There are several approaches that aim at personalizing e-learning environments. However, they focus mainly on technological and/or networking aspects without caring of contextual aspects. They consider only a limited version of context while providing personalization. In our work, the objective is to improve e-learning environment personalization making use of a better understanding and modeling of the user’s educational and technological context using ontologies. We show an example of the use of our proposal in the AdaptWeb system, in which content and navigation recommendations are provided depending on the student’s context.

Human–computer interaction (HCI) is a research field which engages different disciplines, interest groups and communities, and which has emerged in different countries at different times. To understand how the HCI research community has evolved in Brazil, this paper applies data and visual analytics to its main conference series, the Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems, henceforth IHC. We have explored the metadata of all 340 full papers published in the 14 editions of IHC. Our goal was to investigate the evolution of the Brazilian HCI community so we can raise the level of “self-knowledge” and thus discuss strategies that can further help develop this research community. From our analysis, we could understand more deeply the authorship profile of our community and how it has changed over time, the co-authorship networks evolution, the prominent institutions and states, the reference profile and the research topics over time. We hope that this paper will contribute to inspire other scientific communities to analyze themselves, and encourage their own discussions.

Adaptweb: a teaching-learning environment adaptable in Web Abstract This article, which emphasizes the technical aspects, presents the results obtained within the ambit of Electra and Adaptweb projects, applied to the authorship and the adaptable presentation of the disciplines that compound the courses EAD in the Web. The aim is to allow the adequacy of tactics and ways to present the contents to the students from different graduation courses and with different learning styles, enabling different ways of presenting each one of the contents, adjusting it to each course and to the individual preferences of the participating students. This proposal was validated through a real case study, involving the Numeric Methods discipline at the State University of Londrina (UEL). This discipline is offered to three university courses: Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science. In each course, the author-professor sets a sequence of concepts, with their respective levels of complexity, as well as with their respective examples, exercises and suitable complementary materials. The students may use different learning styles through the selection of the navigation way and of the presentation styles. The navigational adjustment aspects include navigation in a tutorial or in a free way, offering different alternatives of teaching tactics. The complete environment for the authorship and presentation of courses is available at the present moment at the phase of operational prototype. This prototype is being incorporated to the platform of EAD into some free software from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). The environment is based on a set of components that back up the pre-authorship, adaptation of content and navigation phases. The implementation primordially uses the language of PHP programming, the database carrier MySOL and the XML language.

This paper presents a conceptual model to the gamification process of e-learning environments. This model aims to help identify which elements are involved in the gamification process. To understand which game elements is commonly used by e-learning systems, we analyzed ten different gamified e-learning systems. As a proof of concept, our conceptual model was used in a existing adaptive e-learning system. As future work, we propose to extend the conceptual model, focusing on making it adapted to the students profile and preferences.

An e-learning environment is normally used by different types of users, with different needs, profiles and cultures, however, usually it is created and maintained without taking into account these users features. In times when web-based system needs to provide support for an ever increasing amount of material and make it available for local-language populations across the world, the introduction of the culture concept in web-based systems (especially e-learning environments) is becoming a necessity, a challenge, and a timely and relevant issue. Indeed, in attempting to disentangle this diversity, culture has received increasing attention in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) community, particularly in adaptive system field. This paper details a new approach to user modeling in e-learning, taking into account contextual aspects such as technological, educational, personal and especially cultural context to improve personalization capabilities, making use of a set of ontologies for representing explicitly this rich context as an extension of traditional student modeling, and their incorporation in a actual e-learning system called AdaptWeb (an e-learning system used in some Brazilians universities nowadays).

In this chapter, we present an approach for recommendation of learning materials to students in an e-learning environment. Our aim is to increase the current system’s personalization capabilities for students in different scenarios making use of recommendation techniques. The recommendation is produced considering learning materials’ properties, student’s profile and the context of use. In addition, the process of recommendation is improved through students´ collaboration. In the context of this work, a learning material is a link to a Web page or a paper available on the Web and previously stored in a private repository. The process of collaboration occurs during student’s evaluations of the recommendations. These student´s evaluations are used by the system to produce new recommendations for other students. The main features of the recommendations aspects are described and some examples are also used to discuss and illustrate how to provide this personalization.

This paper presents a comparative analysis based on two independent studies of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) education and research in Brazil. The first study was conducted to understand how HCI has been taught in Brazil, via a survey responded by 114 educators and researchers in the country. The second study analyzed the scientific production of HCI in Brazil from a fifteen-year analysis of full papers published on the Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems (IHC). Our analysis is based on data-driven visual exploration, and it can help to get insights from the data and to identify how HCI research in Brazil relates to our education programs. We believe this kind of analysis can shed some light in the evolution of HCI in other countries.

Culture strongly influences people’s values, expectations, behavior, and even perceptions and cognitive reasoning. Although HCI researchers recognize culture as an important factor, the research about cultural issues and HCI needs to go further. This paper discusses why culture should not be viewed as a threat or something that is better to relegated to minor importance in Human-Computer Interaction, but that has a key role in the investigations and development of new theories, methods and techniques. In the light of the grand challenges prospected in GranDIHC-BR by the Brazilian HCI community, we explore some of the opportunities and challenges culture brought to HCI as a research area.
