This was a quantitative, ecological, exploratory study using spatial analysis and a geographic information system. The population consisted of all the women that had filed complaints against domestic violence in the city of Joao Pessoa, Paraiba State, Brazil, from 2002 to 2005, at the Specialized Police Precinct for Women. The aim was to investigate the spatial distribution of domestic violence in order to assist policymakers in the decision-making process. Analysis of the results allowed identifying areas of low and high incidence of domestic violence, besides comparing the risk in each neighborhood to the overall rate for the city of Joao Pessoa. Based on the Getis and Ord index, the study produced a decision on priority areas for intervening in domestic violence. The authors highlight the need for changes in care for female victims of violence and the link among institutions with permanent education in the services, including discussions on gender and violence against women.

Introduction: Population aging is a global reality. In Brazil, it is so expressive and in 2050 is estimated that the number of men and women over 80 years old can overcome the 20-24 years old population and also children under 14 years old. Metabolic syndrome is defined as a set of cardiovascular risk factors, detection and intervention in this age group may decrease cardiovascular mortality. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in elderly patients in a northeastern Brazilian city. Method: This is a quantitative, observational, cross-sectional and population-based study. The population consisted of non-institutionalized individuals aged> 60 years old, attended in the Family Health Strategy (FHS) and residents in Cajazeiras, PB, Brazil. For the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome we considered the criteria recommended by the International Federation of Diabetes. Results: We studied 351 elderly patients with 72.4+8.7 years old and 66.1% were female. The prevalence of MS was 69.8% and the most frequent criterion was increased waist circumference (82.6%), followed by high triglycerides (81.5%) and low HDL-cholesterol (80.6%). We observed a statistically significant positive association between MS and women [OR: 1.38 (95% CI: 1.18 to 1.63)] and housing in urban areas [OR: 1.23 (1.02 to 1.48)]. Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of MS among the elderly mainly in women and those living in urban areas.

Abstract Introduction: The concept of assistive technology covers several areas of action; one of them is communication with the elaboration of accessible solutions to overcome daily difficulties. It contributes to the resumption of functional abilities, expanding and facilitating inclusion and independent living. Objective: To analyze the usability of a low cost prototype device to support educational activities of adolescents with cerebral palsy. Methods: A descriptive observational study. The evaluation of a prototype device was made through a validated questionnaire, Quest Version 2.0, on the level of the user’s satisfaction with an assistive technology, composed of 12 evaluation items. The questionnaire was filled out by the educator based on the observation of four wheelchair-bound participants diagnosed with cerebral palsy according to the international classification of diseases and health-related problems, ICD-10, who attend a coexistence and teaching institution in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Results: The device developed was considered an assistive technology, which provided an experience with a positive level of satisfaction for the participants. Conclusion: The tested prototype contributes to communication and interaction allowing adolescents with cerebral palsy to participate in educational activities. Implications for Rehabilitation The device assists the individual in the educational activities and can positively influence their development, observe the individual number 5, who has an important limitation in coordination and fine movements, placing the role of the task in the vertical position offers a new perspective to perform the task, this stimulates him to try to perform the work, so the challenge was adjusted to the demands of each individual which can contribute to its neuromotor development, the amplitude of the distal movements and the manual ability, since it must look for alternatives to complete the task requested.

Patients in the immediate post-operative period have several clinical features and when they are admitted in the post-anesthetic recovery room the signs and symptoms that affect the patient physically and psychologically resulting of surgical procedures begin to emerge. Urinary retention occurs frequently in these patients, as some anesthetics contribute to the development of this clinical condition. This research aims to analyze the incidence of urinary retention after surgery of patients of various specialties, correlating the type of anesthesia and the need for urinary catheterization. This study is characterized as exploratory, descriptive, with quantitative approach and was performed in a hospital of high complexity in Juazeiro do Norte. The sample was composed of the patients admitted to the post-anesthetic recovery room and during that time they presented urinary retention. Data analysis was demonstrated by the tables relating to the literature. The study contributed to the growth of scientific knowledge for hospital staff under study, as there were a large number of species records about urinary retention of patients undergoing surgical procedures that were admitted to the patient unit, especially in surgical units. That worried the nursing staff on the efficiency of systematization so there was an improvement in the quality of care, as many times, such deductions were accompanied by distension and suprapubic pain. Through these results, we could identify some interventions that have contributed to solve this nursing diagnosis, involving the whole multidisciplinary team and ensure the patient unit staff understood holistically the issues involved in this clinical condition and to be more involved in this process.

ObjectiveTo identify the factors that lead to the legalization and jurisdiction of health care by patients and health customers of the Unified Health System of Brazil, SUS.Subjects and methodsThe legalization of health care is effective when the citizen searches for health care in health institutions without success. Thus, his or her last alternative is to seek legal resources. This is a systematic review of the PubMed database carried out in February, March and April 2017 using the integrated method and three searches. The eligibility criteria for the studies were being published in English, Portuguese or Spanish, working with humans and articles being available in the full version. Dissertations, letters to the author, editorials, current themes and free themes were excluded.ResultsA total of 3338, 6 and 16 studies were found, respectively, in the first, second and third search. After refinement, there were 29 articles published between 2009 and 2016, of which 11 met the established criteria. The findings demonstrate that the population seeks the intervention of a legal system for access to medicine, treatment and therapy, medium and high complexity procedures and to obtain food formulas, supplies and medical hospital products.ConclusionThe factors that contributed to legalization were predominantly related to medications and being in agreement with the other studies in the literature, with emphasis on requests for vacancies in the unit/intensive care center with new determining factors.

Background Pelvic floor dysfunctions (PFDs) affect the female population, and the postpartum period can be related to the onset or aggravation of the disease. Early identification of the symptoms and the impact on quality of life can be achieved through assessment instruments. Objective The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate questionnaires used to assess PFD in the postpartum period. Methods A systematic review study was conducted, following Preferred Reporting Items for the Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria, using the databases: PubMed, Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde (BVS), Web of Science, and Scopus, and the keywords PFD or pelvic floor disorders, postpartum or puerperium, and questionnaire. Articles published up till May 2018 were included, searching for articles using validated questionnaires for the evaluation of PFDs in postpartum women. The articles included were evaluated according to a checklist, and the validation studies and translated versions of the questionnaires were identified. Results The search of the databases resulted in 359 papers, and 33 were selected to compose this systematic review, using nine validated questionnaires to assess PFDs in the postpartum period: International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire – Vaginal Symptoms (ICIQ-VS), Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory 20 (PFDI-20), Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire (PFIQ-7), PFDI-46, Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire (PFIQ-31), Pelvic Floor Bother Questionnaire (PFBQ), Female Pelvic Floor Questionnaire, electronic Personal Assessment Questionnaire – Pelvic Floor, and PFD questionnaire specific for pregnancy and postpartum. The most frequently reported questionnaires included PFDI-20, PFIQ-7, and ICIQ-VS and are recommended by ICI. In addition, the review identified a specific questionnaire, recently developed, to access PFD during pregnancy and postpartum. Conclusion The questionnaires used to evaluate PFD during postpartum period are developed for general population or urology/gynecology patients with incontinence and reinforce the paucity of highly recommended questionnaires designed for postpartum, in order to improve early and specific approach for this period of life.
