Current theoretical study shows relationships between sexual abuse during childhood, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and cognitive impairments. The cognitive perspective of sexual abuse effects and PTSD has been undertaken. Child sexual abuse against children is considered a risk factor in child development due to severe cognitive, emotional and behavioral sequences related to the event. The impact of sexual abuse involves short and long term effects and may be seen during adulthood. Review studies foreground the association between traumatic events (sexual abuse), PTSD, and alterations, structural and functional, in cerebral areas related to biological stress response systems. The necessity of future researches investigating the effects of stress and trauma in the child’s neurodevelopment will be discussed.

The aim of this chapter is to discuss theoretical-methodological aspects involving the violence in dating relationships in the Brazilian adolescents. Therefore, we discuss the use of standardized instruments, as the Conflict in Adolescent Dating Relationships Inventory and the Conflict Tactics Scale, in the investigation of the dating teen violence, as well as conceptions about dating and violence on dating relationship. The definition of dating violence adopted in research brings implications for the decision-making of the instruments and on the rates of prevalence. This chapter presents data of a research with 415 adolescents, aged 14–19 years old, from public and private high school – southern Brazil. The girls presented higher average perpetration of verbal/emotional violence, whereas boys are more perpetrators of sexual violence. The bi-directional index of violence was 94.7% in the cases investigated. Considering that the bi-directionality of violence is a specific characteristic of the affective-sexual relations between young people, the instruments must be sensitive to evaluate both the violence suffered and perpetrated. Finally, some methodological limitations of studies in this area are discussed, such as the participation of only one of the dyad members. In addition, gender and sexual orientation biases should be considered in future studies.

This work refers to a qualitative search that aimed to identify risk and protective factors in cases of the sexual abuse in the adolescence. We interviewed two teenager girls victims of sexual abuse who were in treatment at Centro de Referencia Especializado da Assistencia Social (CREAS) from a country city of Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil. The Interview’s data were analyzed through the Content Analysis (Bardin, 1977). Relating to the search results, we observed a greater presence of risk factors than protection factors in the teenagers present moment of their life, which deserves a special attention by the services that meet these cases. It is suggested future research related to the studies about resilience and positive aspects of human life, on victims of sexual abuse, since they can strengthen the victims’ healthy aspects, helping them to rebuild their lives.
