Compreendendo as mães de crianças vítimas de abuso sexual: ciclos de violência

Samara Silva dos Santos; Débora Dalbosco Dell'Aglio

The objective of this article is to discuss the characteristics of mothers of children who are victims of sexual abuse, covering aspects such as emotional reconciliation, multigenerational characteristics and maternal reactions to the disclosure. Child sexual abuse is considered to be a public health problem and its consequences have been a focus of interest of many researchers. However, few studies have been devoted to exploring the maternal characteristics involved in this complex cycle of violence. In general, mothers of sexually abused children are not depicted as perpetrators of the abuse, but in some way they find themselves involved, either as victims of or witnesses to this situation. On the other hand, many factors influence the mothers reactions when faced with the revelation of the abuse, such as the perceptions of the social support service and the mothers personality traits, amongst others. Research has demonstrated the continuity of violence from generation to generation, pointing to the need for longitudinal studies on child sexual abuse.

Revelação do abuso sexual infantil: reações maternas

Samara Silva dos Santos; Débora Dalbosco Dell'Aglio

The literature has indicated that mothers of children victims of sexual abuse, when taking knowledge of the abuse situation of their children, can present a variety of manifestations that can include anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Moreover, the reaction facing abuse disclosure can be support and protection or, still, avoidance, indifference or ambivalence. This study aimed at investigating how mothers of sexually abused girls reacted when they had taken knowledge of the abuse. Ten participants who were being sheltered at a specialized service for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in a public hospital of Porto Alegre were interviewed. The mothers reactions were classified in positive and ambivalent. The majority of the mothers believed in the report of their daughters and denounced the abuse, although not all had been protective in the sense of keeping their children safe from the abuser or immediately looking for help and carrying out the denunciation. The factors that contribute to mothers reactions are also discussed. The literature has indicated that mothers of children victims of sexual abuse, when taking knowledge of the abuse situation of their children, can present a variety of manifestations that can include anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. QUANDO O SILENCIO E ROMPIDO: O PROCESSO DE REVELAÇÃO E NOTIFICAÇÃO DE ABUSO SEXUAL INFANTIL

Samara Silva dos Santos; Débora Dalbosco Dell'Aglio

The aim of this article is to discuss the process of disclosure and reporting of cases of sexual abuse involving children and adolescents, based on the analysis of publications related to that topic. Studies suggest that the disclosure and reporting of sexual abuse is a difficult moment for the victims and their families because it usually involves someone close to the child. It provokes changes in the family system, such as disruption of ties, guilt and loss in financial support. Several factors that may facilitate or inhibit the disclosure and reporting of sexual abuse are discussed such as the mothers reaction. It is highlighted the importance of an integrated work in the service that deals with these situations, involving the victims care, in the forwarding of the processes and in the strengthening of the supporting network for families.

Entregar o filho para adoção é abandoná-lo? Concepções de profissionais da saúde

Bruna Maria Corazza Martins; Samara Silva dos Santos; Aline Cardoso Siqueira

Abstract: This study aimed to determine the perception of health care professionals in regards to the abandonment of children and giving up of children for adoption, as well as the reasons that lead a mother to take these actions. Seven health care professionals participated in the study, including nursing technicians, nurses, and physicians. The working experience of these professionals ranged from 5 to 23 years. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview, approaching the opinion of the participants about abandonment and giving up infants, as well as motivations regarding taking these actions. The responses were qualitatively analyzed, enabling the emergence of three categories: 1) Different pathways: understanding the giving up of children as abandonment of care; 2) Possible explanations concerning the decision to give a child up for adoption; and 3) Before abandonment: factors involved in the act. The influence of social conceptions and personal beliefs about motherhood and the giving up or abandonment of children is discussed.
