A Design and Implementation of OTU4 Framer for l00G Ethernet

Ji-Wook Youn; Jongho Kim; Jong-Yoon Shin; Kwangjoon Kim

This paper discusses standardization activities, requirements and enabling technologies for 100G Ethernet and 100G OTN. The need of 100Gbps transport capacity has been gaining greater interest from service providers and carrier vendors. Moreover, optical transport networks based on OTN/DWDM are changing their properties to apply Ethernet traffic which is dramatically increasing. We realize and experimentally demonstrate OTU4 framer with commercial FPGA. The key features of the realized OTU4 framer are parallel signal processing function, multi-lane distribution function, GMP function and FEC function. The realized OTU4 framer has the large signal processing capacity of 120Gbps, which allows to transport about 120Gbps client signals such as Ethernet and Ethernet. The realized OTU4 framer has the advantages to quickly adjust to changing markets and new technologies by using commercial FPGA instead of ASIC.

Inter-layer path control with FA-LSP cognitive capability in multi-layer networks

Kyeong-Eun Han; Tae Il Kim; Ji-Wook Youn; Sun Me Kim

We propose a novel inter-layer path control mechanism in a PCE-VNTM cooperative multi-layer networks (MLN). For this, we define a novel FA-LSP aware PCE which only reports and manages a forwarding adjacency-label switched path (FA-LSP) state. In our scheme, the FA-LSP can be distinguished from the pure higher-layer TE link more and accurately controlled with a network policy. We worked out the methodology and conducted a simulation in terms of the setup delay and the control message overhead under various conditions. Our results indicate that, compared with other representative models, it provides the lowest setup delay of about 300 ms with a 50% reduction in the overhead.

Je-Soo Ko; Ji-Wook Youn; Ho-gun Kim; Seung-Woo Lee; Won-Kyoung Lee; Bheom-Soon Joo

In the P-OTS, OTN line signal of the OTN line card contains packet signals within ODU frame. To protect an ODU path, an ODUk path protection function is required. The proposed ODUk linear protection function is implemented based on the hardware within the OTN line card. We presented the operation of 1+1 unidirectional ODUk SNC protection switching. The measured protection time is less than 13ms.

Demonstration of packet-optic integrated transport system

Ji-Wook Youn; Bup-Joong Kim; Woo-young Choi; Hyun-Jae Lee; Hongju Kim; Jaehoon Yu

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a packet optical integrated transport system. The proposed system supports packet transport layer features based on PBB-TE. The restoration time from a link failure is measured to be about 20 ms and 11.8 ms, respectively, in the packet transport layer and optical transport layer. The measured restoration time is much smaller than the 50 ms industry requirement for real-time services. The fast restoration time allows the proposed packet-optic integrated transport system to offer high availability and reliability which is a requirement for transport networks.

High available system control network in the packet transport system

Bup-Joong Kim; Woo-young Choi; Ji-Wook Youn; Hongju Kim; Hyun-Jae Lee; Jea-Hoon Yu

This paper is about design and buildup of multiprocessor interconnects in the packet transport system. To keep pace with expansion and growth of internet and data communication, constant enhancement and upgrade of packet transport system is required. As network adopts new services like IPTV, VoIP, and VLAN, processing power of packet transport system should be easily and dynamically added to the system for supporting highly compute-power requiring jobs. The processing power of system depends on the number of processors, the clock speed of each processor, efficiency of operation system in data centric processing, proper distribution of system works, and robust and high bandwidth interconnects (system control network) among processors. This paper suggested several methods for the system control networking in the packet transport system and reviewed each method in the view of internal and external expansion of system control network, loop elimination, and redundancy support.

Multi - channel Spectrum Analyzer for High Capacity Optical Transport Networks

Ji-Wook Youn; Hyung-Joo Kim; Jong-Hyun Lee

A simple multi-channel spectrum analyzer using an InGaAs array sensor and a diffraction grating is proposed and developed for high-capacity optical transport networks. With the developed multichannel spectrum analyzer, we could measure signal power, wavelength, and optical signal-to-noise ratio of each channel for multi-channel optical signals with 100 GHz and 50 GHz channel spacing, simultaneously. We could measure each channel power and wavelength with a deviation of less than 0.2 dB and 0.063 nm, respectively. We have obtained optical signal-to-noise ratio with a deviation of less than 1.0 dB compared with conventional optical spectrum analyzer in the wide input power range between -42 dBm and -27 dBm per channel.
