A DSS for integrated distribution of empty and full containers

Denise Lindstrom Bandeira; João Luiz Becker; Denis Borenstein

A DSS integrating empty and full containers transshipment operations is presented, addressing the typically unbalanced export/import containers trading problem. The problem is modeled as a network, where nodes represent customers, leasing companies, harbors and warehouses, while arcs represent transportation routes. The underlying mathematical model operates in stages, first prioritizing and adjusting full containers demands considering available empty containers supplies, and then statically optimizing costs. Transportation routes are registered and dynamically controlled, cyclically, for a given time horizon. The DSS is flexible, allowing several parameters to be configured. Experimental examples using randomly generated parameters were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the system.

The impact of adopting IT governance on financial performance: An empirical analysis among Brazilian firms

Guilherme Lerch Lunardi; João Luiz Becker; Antonio Carlos Gastaud Maçada; Pietro Cunha Dolci

Recently, there has been a great deal of interest on the part of many organizations in the concept of IT governance in order to justify IT investments. Some studies have shown that companies, which have good IT governance models, generate higher returns on their IT investments than their competitors. However, there is a lack of scientific research confirming that effective IT governance leads to better financial performance. In this paper, we attempt to determine whether companies that have adopted IT governance mechanisms have improved their financial performance, by measuring pre and post adoption performance indicators. We found that companies that adopted IT governance practices improved their performance when compared to the control group, particularly in relation to profitability. Furthermore, we found that the effects of adopting IT governance mechanisms on financial performance were more pronounced in the year following adoption than in the year in which they were adopted.

Measuring the efficiency of Brazilian post office stores using data envelopment analysis

Denis Borenstein; João Luiz Becker; Vaner José do Prado

Postal companies around the world have been seeking methods to support their operational practices in order to keep or increase their market share. The Brazilian Mail and Telegraph Company (ECT) has a portfolio of products and services to offer to its customers through several similar postal offices all over Brazil. The units use several resources with different intensities, currently having their performance evaluated by a single economical factor: revenues over expenses. We propose a performance evaluation method based on data envelopment analysis (DEA), a linear programming technique that makes it possible to include other factors beyond the simplistic, purely economical approach. The objectives of this paper are to define which factors can be used to evaluate the units; to define sets of similar units that develop the same functions, differing only in the intensity of resource usage; to generate, through the technique, the results of the evaluation process obtained from the quantitative factors defined, providing a sensitivity analysis, and to provide useful information to help managers in their decision‐making process.

MEASUREMENT IN SOFTWARE ENGINEERING: FROM THE ROADMAP TO THE CROSSROADS

Carlo Gabriel Porto Bellini; Rita de Cássia de Faria Pereira; João Luiz Becker

Research on software measurement can be organized around five key conceptual and methodological issues: how to apply measurement theory to software, how to frame software metrics, how to develop metrics, how to collect core measures, and how to analyze measures. The subject is of special concern for the industry, which is interested in improving practices — mainly in developing countries, where the software industry represents an opportunity for growth and usually receives institutional support for matching international quality standards. Academics are also in need of understanding and developing more effective methods for managing the software process and assessing the success of products and services, as a result of an enhanced awareness about the emergency of aligning business processes and information systems. This paper unveils the fundamentals of measurement in software engineering and discusses current issues and foreseeable trends for the subject. A literature review was performed within major academic publications in the last decade, and findings suggest a sensible shift of measurement interests towards managing the software process as a whole — without losing from sight the customary focus on hard issues like algorithm efficiency and worker productivity.

A systemic and integrated approach to flexible manufacturing systems design

Denis Borenstein; João Luiz Becker; Eduardo Ribas Santos

Flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) design is a complex problem which is concerned with the selection from a wide variety of available system configurations and control strategy alternatives in the light of several criteria (costs, production, flexibility etc.), many of which are difficult to quantify. Although there is a reasonable number of currently available modelling tools to be applied in FMS design, they are based on an erroneous approach, in which design is considered as a separated, local and myopic activity. Design is divided into isolated and unconnected subproblems whose individual solutions may result in a poor global solution. This paper describes a methodology of analysis and evaluation of FMS design competitive alternatives. It examines the use of an integrated, systemic, global, and user‐centred approach for solving the FMS design problem.

IT business value model for information intensive organizations

Antonio Carlos Gastaud Maçada; Mateus Michelini Beltrame; Pietro Cunha Dolci; João Luiz Becker

Many studies have highlighted the capacity Information Technology (IT) has for generating value for organizations. Investments in IT made by organizations have increased each year. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to analyze the IT Business Value for Information Intensive Organizations (IIO - e.g. banks, insurance companies and securities brokers). The research method consisted of a survey that used and combined the models from Weill and Broadbent (1998) and Gregor, Martin, Fernandez, Stern and Vitale (2006). Data was gathered using an adapted instrument containing 5 dimensions (Strategic, Informational, Transactional, Transformational and Infra-structure) with 27 items. The instrument was refined by employing statistical techniques such as Exploratory and Confirmatory Factorial Analysis through Structural Equations (first and second order Model Measurement). The final model is composed of four factors related to IT Business Value: Strategic, Informational, Transactional and Transformational, arranged in 15 items. The dimension Infra-structure was excluded during the model refinement process because it was discovered during interviews that managers were unable to perceive it as a distinct dimension of IT Business Value.

Nomadismo involuntário na reestruturação produtiva do trabalho bancário

Carmem Ligia Iochins Grisci; Gilles Chemale Cigerza; Pedro Mendes Hofmeister; João Luiz Becker

This paper deals with the human consequences caused by modes of working and managing in the restructuring of banking work. It analyzes the mobility – transferences of place and/or position – of employees submitted to restructuring in a public banking institution and presents the consequences of restructuring from the viewpoint of the bank workers. It is a case study, whose data were collected from corporate documents, personal interviews and semi-structured interviews in 1998 and 2003. Data received statistical and content analysis. Results indicate that the restructuring of banking work caused mobility in different manners. The worst effects were on the senior employees and on those who had more length of service, since they descended in the hierarchy. The main human consequences were the instability in work stability, involuntary nomadism, short-term relationships, break of trust and psychic suffering.

Decision Analysis Using Lottery-Dependent Utility

João Luiz Becker; Rakesh K. Sarin

In this article we show how the lottery-dependent expected utility (LDEU) model can be used in decision analysis. The LDEU model is an extension of the classical expected utility (EU) model and yet permits preference patterns that are infeasible in the EU model. We propose a framework for constructing decision trees in a particular way that permits us to use the principle of optimality and thus the divide and conquer strategy for analyzing complex problems using the LDEU model. Our approach may be applicable to some other nonlinear utility models as well. The result is that, if desired, decision analysis can be conducted without assuming the restrictive substitution principle/independence axiom.

Developing automated e‐survey and control tools: an application in industrial management

Eusebio Scornavacca; João Luiz Becker; Stuart J. Barnes

The application of the Internet to traditional business and administrative activities has introduced considerable digitisation and process automation. One key area of development from a research perspective is the use of electronic (e‐)surveys, based on Internet technology. E‐surveys can bring many benefits from a research perspective, including extremely low marginal costs, automation of processes, and the ability to collect and manage very large samples. However, experience in the use of e‐surveys has found considerable challenges in achieving a quality sample frame and response rates. This paper explores the development of an e‐survey tool for assessing information needs of growth enterprises in Brazil. A key learning from the use of the survey is the use of control methods for both improving the response rate, and, as a consequence, the sample frame.
