Environmental sustainability has become increasingly important to businesses as a response to the rapid depletion of natural resources. Information Technology (IT) in particular represents a meaningful part of the environmental issues that society has been facing. Therefore, Green IT emerges as a way of combining available resources and sustainable and economic policies, thus, generating benefits for both the environment and businesses. The purpose of this paper, hence, is to explain the dynamics of Green IT implementation in organizations in light of the structurationist view of technology. We conducted a case study research based on the cases of three Brazilian companies interested in this movement. Results provide a better understanding of the relationship among technology, individuals, and organization institutional properties, thus enhancing the role played by IT teams in institutionalizing the environmental dimension of sustainability in organizations.

Recently, the integration of Internet and mobile technologies has been a worldwide phenomenon, culminating in the emergence of another technology called Mobile Internet (MI). Although this has received interest from executives and academics, there is little known about the adoption of this technology in organizations. Thus, we aimed to identify the main reasons that organizations adopt MI and analyze the perceived effects of MI use on organizational performance. The study was characterized as an exploratory quantitative research conducted with 96 firms from Rio Grande do Sul state in Brazil. We used the IT adoption model proposed by Lunardi, Dolci and Macada (2010) as the main foundation. Results suggest MI adoption is influenced by three distinct factors: perceived usefulness, organizational readiness and competitive pressures, whereby perceived usefulness is the primary motivator. Regarding the perceived effects of MI use on organizational performance, we found that MI primarily increases productivity, but also attracts new customers, increases sales and reduces operating costs.

It is widely recognized the importance of small and medium enterprises (SME) for a country to achieve and sustain their socioeconomic development. As the Information Technology (IT) acquisition becomes cheaper, more popular becomes its use in business. Thus, this article aims at better understanding the adoption of IT and its association with different management activities of SME. We conducted a survey with 4,341 SME located in Rio Grande do Sul, which respondents were the owners of their respective companies. The instrument assessed ten dimensions of business management: Planning, Customers, Work Team, Suppliers, Quality and Productivity, Point of Sale, Inventory, Sales, Credit, and Cash, as well as other categorical variables. The results show significant differences between computerized and not computerized companies, both in terms of profile and business management performance from companies that have adopted computers and Internet. In addition, the study showed a positive relationship between the amount of available computing resources in the company and the level of administrative activities.
