In order to obtain subsidies to a retail system based on the whole animal, this study compares the weight of live components of lambs, male (castrated) and female, of the Corriedale breed, at three different slaughter ages. Animais were raised under range conditions on native pasture, at Acegua region, Bage county in southern Brazil. Sixteen lambs (60) bom in August 1994 and slaughtered twenty at a time (10 males + 10 females), choosing always the heaviest ones, at the following ages: 03/04/95, 08/05/95 and 05/05/95. There was a siaughtering time effect upon live weight and its components. In absoluto values (kg) slaughtering time influenced live weight, carcass weight, green viscera, head, legs, lungs with trachea, hearth and kidneys. It carne out that animais slaughtered in the first group (April) showed a heavier live and carcass weight than those slaughtered in the second group (May) and these were heavier than the ones slaughtered in the third group (June). The heaviest lambs, with exception of the hearth, showed higher weights of their body components. There was a sex effect too, upon live weight, green viscera, head, legs, tiver and kidneys. In either, absoluto or percentile values, males were heavier than females. It is concluded that slaughter time and sex of the individuais are elements to be considered to obtain uniform carcasses. an importam aspect to retail and acceptance by the consumer.

Fifty (ten per breed) Merino, Polwarth. Corriedale, Romney Marsh and Texel lambs were castradet at 30 days of age and raised up to weaning (ten weeks) on native pasture at the Centro de Pesquisa de Pecuaria dos Campos Sulbrasileiros (EMBRAPA), Southern (Bage, RS) region of Brazil. Following weaning, the animals were feedioted during one week and each lamb was daily fed with 200 grams of a diet containing 17% of crude protein and 75% of dry matter basin. The animals were then moved to pasture up to 225 days of age when they were slaughtered to quantify and compare in vivo and carcass tosses and morphology. Liveweight (with and without a fasting period) was influenced by genotype. However, Merino, Polwarth and Corriedale live weight were not different among themselves, but lower than Romney Marsh lambs, which by their turn, were lower than Texel animals live weight. Fasting losses was significantiy affected when compared in absolute numbers (kg), bui not percentually. Highest tosses were observed in Texel breed lambs followed by Romney Marsh, whereas Corriedale, Polwarth and Merino didnot differ among themselves. Live weight carcass yield were significantly influenced by genotype. Heavier lambs showed superior carcass yield. Texel animals showed superior in vivo and in the carcass morphology, along wilh better conformation, body condition and body and carcass capacity, as cpmpared to other breeds.

Alimentação do peixe-rei (Odontesthes bonariensis, Atherinopsidae) nas lagoas Mirim e Mangueira, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil

Sérgio Renato Noguez Piedras; Juvêncio Pouey

Natural feeding of silverside (Odontesthes bonariensis Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1835) was studied in the Mirim and Mangueira lagoons, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The stomach content of 60 silverside individuals (Odontesthes bonariensis) from that lagoons showed that this species has a wide food spectrum. A wide range of food items was consumed without affecting fish growth, since similar body conditions were observed. In Mangueira lagoon, crustaceans (Isopoda) represented 65% of the diet, whereas in Mirim lagoon, mollusks (Bivalvia and Gastropoda) represented 70% of the identified stomach contents.

Studies that organize lists of species are essential and act as the starting point for future discussions on the ecology of fish in environments that are poorly studied. The present paper describes the fish assemblage of the hydrographic basin of Chasqueiro Stream, an important component of the Mirim Lagoon system. Fish were collected during one year period between August/2012 and July/2013 in six sites, comprising three biotopes: upstream, reservoir and downstream. A total of 22,853 specimens were collected, and were distributed into 83 species, 20 families, and eight orders. The two species with the largest number of individuals captured were Bryconamericus iheringii with 2,904 (12.71%) and Cheirodon ibicuiensis with 2,868 (12.55%). Characiformes and Siluriformes were the most representative orders in terms of richness and abundance. Bryconamericus iheringi and Cyanocharax alburnus were the species with the highest abundance upstream, while Hyphessobrycon luetkenii and Corydoras paleatus contributed more to the abundance downstream. Cheirodon ibicuhiensis and Heterocheirodon jacuhiensis were the most representative species in the reservoir. This study revealed a rich fauna of fish, which should be preserved for future generations and for the maintenance of local and regional biodiversity.

Sperm from different species shows biological differences, determining the success or failure of the sperm-mediated gene transfer (SMGT) technique. There is evidence that exogenous DNA uptake by the spermatozoa is a species-specific and highly regulated phenomenon. Problems involving SMGT procedures might be related to activation of defenses in spermatozoa and in seminal plasma such as DNase enzymes. The objective in the present study was to transfect South American catfish spermatozoa after seminal plasma removal. Seminal plasma had a strong DNase activity that is reduced after sperm washes in isosmotic solution, in which Western blot analysis demonstrated a reduction in the DNase content after washes and Southern blot evaluations show the presence of plasmid after sperm washes. The seminal plasma DNase digests exogenous DNA in a few minutes and has an optimal activity at 43°C. Also, EDTA at 30 mM concentration inhibits the DNase activity. Using PCR the pEGFP vector was internalized by sperm cells even at lesser concentrations (5-40 ng/10(6) spermatozoa) without motility loss after seminal plasma removal. Conversely, using greater pEGFP concentrations (100 ng/10(6) spermatozoa), there were no motile cells, suggesting toxicity of exogenous DNA for sperm cells. These results are interpreted to provide information that can improve the protocol for generation of transgenic South American catfish.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth performance of catfish fingerlings fed silage from fish waste, replacing soybean meal and sugar cane yeast. During 35 days, 375 silver catfish fingerlings with 1.73±0.17 g initial weight, distributed in a completely randomized design, were evaluated in five treatments and four replicates. The treatments consisted of fish silage inclusion at 0, 12.5, 25, 37.5, and 50%. All the evaluated parameters, except the condition factor, showed that the replacing of soybean meal and yeast for fish waste silage improves the yield performance of silver catfish fingerlings.
