Thirty nursing auxiliaries at a Brazilian hospital were trained in intramuscular injection at the ventrogluteal site in a lecture delivered by videoconference (over an IP connection at up to 512 kbit/s). Participants were able thereafter to practise on the same manikins used for demonstration during the lecture, until they felt confident in carrying out the procedure. They then completed an evaluation questionnaire on the use of videoconferencing as a teaching method. Most of their responses were favourable. The principal reasons given for attending the videoconference lecture were the ability to combine work and education, the opportunity to participate in an innovative approach and an interest in the subject of the lecture. The present study demonstrates the potential of videoconferencing for distance education in nursing.

Objective: To describe the evaluation of the Virtual Learning Environment of TelEduc in teaching endocrine physiology for graduates of a nursing degree course at a public university in the state of Sao Paulo. Methods: Cross-sectional, descriptive study with quantitative analysis of data and a sample of 44 students. To collect data, we used an instrument that included educational aspects of the virtual learning environment: content, interaction and activities, and technical aspects: response time and quality of the interface. Results: In the evaluation of students, data indicated that for the majority of responses obtained, the items included the following characteristics: content (84.0%), interaction (83.2%), activities (89.3%), response time (94.0%), and interface quality (95.8%). Conclusion: The virtual learning environment,

This descriptive and exploratory study aimed to verify the existence of factors related to the standardization of urinary catheters in a city in the interior of the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Data was collected through interviews after approval obtained from the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Sao Paulo at Ribeirao Preto School of Nursing. Of the nine hospital institutions who took part in the study, 100% have a standardized procedure for urinary catheterization. The institutions present differences in the proposed procedure, which interferes positively and negatively in its standardization and places doubt upon whether the standardized procedure is indeed being carried out. This study concludes that there is a need to reevaluate the proposed standardization, with interdisciplinary discussions to verify if the proposal is being carried out and to search for applicable training and teaching strategies. DESCRIPTORS: Urinary catheterization. Methods. Nursing. Protocols. In Brazil, the development of telenursing started in the year 2000, with the pioneer work of the Study and Research Group on Communication in the Nursing Process, GEPECOPEn. This research group at the University of Sao Paulo (USP) at Ribeirao Preto College of Nursing, EERP, a WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing Research Development, has worked on projects that can optimize physical, technological, and human resources in health promotion actions at the interface between research, teaching, and permanent – in-class and distance – education by using communication technologies.

Pesquisa básica na enfermagem

The integration between basic science and research in the field of nursing is an emerging subject and expanding in many countries. However, in Brazil, researchers have shown little interest in exploring this line of research, in spite of the numerous benefits it may bring to nursing care practice. In this article, by means of a bibliographic review, we will focus on the importance of basic research and take into consideration our own experiences and expectations as nursing researchers, emphasizing the possibility of integrating fundamental and experimental science with nursing research and practice. The integration between basic science and research in the field of nursing is an emerging subject and expanding in many countries. Is there a link between salt-intake and atrial natriuretic peptide system during hypertension induced by nitric oxide blockade?

Leila Maria Marchi Alves; Luiz R. O. Tosi; José Antunes-Rodrigues; Evelin Capellari Cárnio

Long-term nitric oxide (NO) blockade is known to induce a severe and progressive hypertension. The influence of the salt-intake on atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) system in this hypertension model is unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate ANP plasma levels, content and mRNA in atria of male Wistar rats chronically treated with oral Nomega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) after 4 weeks of high-salt diet. The high-salt diet induced an increase (P < 0.05) in ANP plasma levels in normotensive rats and no significant changes in hypertensive animals. We observed a significant increase in the ANP content in the left and right atria of hypertensive rats (P < 0.001) when compared to normotensive ones. However, no significant changes were observed during high-salt diet in normotensive and hypertensive animals. Northern blot analysis revealed that ANP gene expression is higher in the right and left atria of hypertensive rats when compared to normotensive rats. However, we found no significant changes in ANP mRNA of rats treated with high-salt diet in normotensive and hypertensive rats when compared to low-salt diet. The present observations indicate no interaction between salt-intake and activation of the ANP system during chronic nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition.
