Luciano Rossoni; Edson Ronaldo Guarido Filho

The evidence of the growth of cooperation between researchers and graduate programs has increased our understanding of the construction of scientific knowledge as embedded in social networks. This article analyzes the structures of cooperation among Brazilian business graduate programs in four areas: science and technology, strategy, public administration and organization studies. It departs from the assumption that different relational arrangements indicate various forms of organization, with consequences to the way knowledge is produced. Based on the analysis of 2874 articles published between 2000 and 2006, we investigate hypotheses concerning small worlds, preferential attachment, core-periphery and program centrality. The results point out the stratification of programs in terms of both the number of authors and published articles. Furthermore, they evidence that the most productive programs are those with more relationships, and that cooperation between programs is strongly correlated with productivity.

This article examines, through network analysis, the relationship structure of research institutions in the field of public sector management and social management in Brazil. The relationship between research institutions is identified based on the institutional affiliations of the authors, by analyzing 549 papers published in the annals of the Anpad annual meeting, from 2000 to 2005. Aided by the Ucinet 6.0 and Pajek 1.10 software, the relationship network was established, making it possible to examine not only the structural and positional properties of the network, but also the influence of the network structure on the scientific production. It was found that, despite the networks low density, the distance between institutions is small, with a much larger central component. In most cases, it can be suggested that the institutions that have the higher number of loops are globally centered and are also important to the networks cohesion. Most loops occur between institutions in the same state. Moreover, the network structure is directly correlated with the production indicators.

Luciano Rossoni; Edson Ronaldo Guarido Filho

This paper examines the association involving scientific production and cooperation between academic institutions in the fi eld of researchin strategy in organizations. Considering 765 papers published by the years of 2000 to 2006, we used social network analysis to investigate therelationship between institutions taking into account its structural and positional properties, as well as its implications under scientific production in the field. The results reveals small-world and center-periphery structures, which one have important influence for institutions social capital constituting and scientifi c production stratifi cation, also conditioned by geographical localization. Moreover, the findings indicate greater probability to be more productive such institutions characterized as more collaborative and with a position of intermediation. These results suggest a significant relation between centrality and scientific production.

Institucionalismo organizacional e práticas de governança corporativa

Luciano Rossoni; Clóvis L. Machado-da-Silva

In this essay, we outline an institutional approach concerning corporate governance, highlighting its dimensions, institutions, and institutionalization. Special attention is paid to the legitimizing quality of governance, since legitimacy is the central point in organizational institutionalism. The literature claims that the legitimacy of governance practices is based not only on rational-utilitarian questions but also on matters of social and symbolic order, e.g., the ideal of distributive justice, in which minority shareholders seek to justify greater control over controlling shareholders and managers guiding organizations on the morality of such requirements. We delineate some elements of the process of institutionalization of corporate governance practices around the world, noting that the emergence of the phenomenon and its spread is the result of several factors that end up pushing the product and capital markets to conform their practices to internationally prevailing standards. We conclude this theoretical essay by highlighting the implications for understanding the governance practices from the standpoint of organizational institutionalism, unfolding possibilities for future studies.

In this article we seek to verify how the level of structural cohesion of researchers in the field of strategy in Brazil conditions the construction of scientific knowledge in this social field. Through the analysis of clusters, taken to effect through the use of the network analysis technique, 2,332 articles were evaluated which were published in Brazilian periodicals and annals of scientific congress from 1997 to 2005. Based on the structurationist perspective of the institutional theory, we examined the role of relations between authors in the persistence and changes in themes over time. We found that the significant growth in the number of papers in the field of strategy was conditioned in terms of themes by the clusters that had been previously formed. We observed a high degree of homogeneity within the clusters even with the occurrence of heterogeneity of themes of research in the field as a whole. This indicates that embeddedness in social groups conditions what is legitimately accepted in the scientific field, implying that there are specific systems of meaning in each cluster, despite the occurrence of a certain level of communality among members of the field. This finding has obvious implications for conversation between different groups of authors.

Organizational Fields and the Structuration Perspective: Analytical Possibilities (1)

Clóvis L. Machado-da-Silva; Edson Ronaldo Guarido Filho; Luciano Rossoni

The concept of the organizational field has been greatly dealt with in the literature on institutional theory in recent years. As the concept of field involves a relational and symbolic dimension, we propose that the theory of structuration, based on the logic of recursiveness between agency and structure should be adapted to the understanding of the field dynamically. In this way, the objective of this theoretical essay is to deal with the dynamic of the organizational field using structurationist logic, allowing that from this logic we recall both the importance of the practice in the structuration process of the organizational field and the historical and recursive character which may constrain or enable the actions of social actors. To this end, we revise the concept of field in different perspectives of analysis, reflecting on the implication of the theoretical presuppositions of each approach and then discuss in a critical manner the theoretical foundation of the structuration process of organizational fields based on the structurationist approach. We conclude the paper with propositions pertaining to the revision of the concept of field from a multiparadigmatic viewpoint in which structure and agency are recursively implied.

Guilherme Silveira Martins; Luciano Rossoni; João Mário Csillag; Michele Esteves Martins; Susana Carla Farias Pereira

In this study we map out the structure of relationships between research institutions in the field of science and technology in Brazil, by analyzing 688 articles published in Enanpad and in the Management Symposium of Technological Innovation, between 2000 and 2005. Based on co-authorship we verified that the field is a great network in which more than half of the institutions are connected, thereby creating social capital. Some institutions also stand out because they have a great number of collaborators, because they form bridges between different groups and because they maintain durable relationships, with indications of homophylia, the geographic locations and institutional role of which condition peer relationships. Finally, the productivity of these institutions is influenced by the cooperation that exists between them.

This article describes and it analyzes characteristics and changes occurred in the configuration of the network of co-authorships formed by professors of Brazilian programs of post graduate (stricto sensu) in administration in the period from 2001 to 2006. The empiric reference includes 703 professors linked to national programs of post graduate in Administration. For the analysis of the social networks and co-authorships of the publications we used the softwares Ucinet 6 and Pajek 1.21. There was significant growth in the number of coauthorships of one triennial as in the other (2001-2003 and 2004-2006). The increase in the interaction among researchers might have occurred for changes which occurred in the criterion of the evaluation of Capes; formation of new research groups and/or maturation of those already existent; the search for larger quality of the researches; elevation of the specialization degree in the scientific field; and predominate methodology in the disciplines, among others. The results suggest that the area is consenting to the exigencies of the official organs of accreditation of the post graduate.
